Uncharted 2 to use all the PS3's power News

Naughty Dog has said Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will come close to using all of the PS3's power, after the first game used just "30 to 40 per cent".

That's according to the Game Informer reveal (read by a poster on the Gametrailers forum), which provides the first details and images of the sequel.

We're told to expect a brand new female lead in the shape of Chloe Frazer, who'll be played by Claudia Black from Stargate SG-1 and Farscape. She may use a rocket launcher, as suggested by cut-scene footage.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, revolves around Nathan Drake finding the lost ships of Marco Polo. Action adventure will still very much be the focus, and Naughty Dog has made significant improvements to combat.

Apparently melee will be more "dynamic", and Drake will be able to shoot while running, climbing and hanging, as well as simultaneously move and aim from behind cover.

Firefly composer Greg Edmonson will return to score the game, and Nolan North will once again provide the voice and movements for hero Nathan Drake.

Naughty Dog apparently refused to comment on whether original heroine Elena or grizzled friend Sully will make comebacks.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will be unveiled properly on Sunday at the 2008 Video Game Awards. Expect more information to tumble out then.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was released at the end of 2007 and is one of the best games on PlayStation 3. It can be picked up as part of the PS3's budget Platinum range for around GBP 20.

the notion of using a percentage of a machines powersounds a bit stupid to me really, what part of the machines power will they be describing here? what can we expect to be improved? at most i expect some more geometry but i'm guessing the game will look basically the same as the 1st visually (obviously apart from the setting) which is no bad thing, it is still one of the best looking console games out there.

not sure i like the sound of a new female lead though, hopefully it is to just throw you off and the trio will be back together as the main cast again.

^The "more power" comes from reduced bottlenecks and spreading the threads better across the processors. In the original game some units would be mostly idle when others were flat out.

This game was a highlight for me too. Played through it twice and loved it. I reckon they can wring a bit more out of the PS3.

Note to Naughty Dog... while Uncharted was an outstanding game, could you use some of the extra 60-70% performance to get rid of the god-awful screen tearing that plagued the first game, please... it was really the only thing that stopped the game from being a real graphical tour-de-force IMO. Oh and make the combat to adventuring ratio about 30:60 too while you're at all! :D

So, either this will be 'TEH BESTEST GAME EVA' on the PS3 therefore we have nothing to look forward to after the release of this game, or, conversely, if its shit will 'TEH PS3 BE TEH D00M3D!!!!!'.

Be interesting to see how it turns out in terms of graphical performance. I think this, Killzone 2 and God of War 3 are going to give the PS3 a real workout.

Why would they care about using all the PS3's power? The PS3 is the gayest system out on the streets!!! The XBox Triple-120 is killing da competition.

Anyway, I gotta go yo! I'm gonna, you know play some of that N64 and then get on to some of that Triple-120.

Fix the horrific tearing, greatly reduce the awful combat and put some proper puzzles and exploration it might just be a decent game.

It still won't rival Gears for combat/visuals or Tombraider for adventuring though.

was there a patch of some sort to fix the tearing? i only played the game about 2 months ago for the first time and didn't notice any tearing at all. This surprised me as i noticed some during on my mates playthrough when the game first came out, especially during the on-rails section.

Thank god I'm not the only one who noticed this, I thought the whole world except me thought this game was amazing.

Don't forget the shitty camera that zooms out so you can't see where you're jumping, and the bugs, like dropping off a ledge only to land on your sidekicks head and not reach the ground, followed by death because it thinks you've fallen too far.

But the puzzles, oh my god the puzzles. Did they even qualify as puzzles?

I should have qualified that comment really. The combat is awful compared to Gears, the game it was trying so very hard to ape but missed the mark on so badly.

Not a problem for PS3 owners, but if you've played Gears then the combat in Uncharted just seems like such a let-down.

Though the combat was great and easily on par with Gears (if not better). But hope they focus more on exploring and puzzles in the sequel since the first game was more a shooter than a Tomb Raider clone.

And yes - fix the tearing this time!!

I've played Gears 1 and 2 and the combat in Uncharted by comparison is far from a let down, there's just too much of it.

That is true, but every detail of combat was shamelessly cloned from Gears, right down to the grenade arc. They got it so wrong though. I genuinely laughed out loud when I played Uncharted as I simply coudnt believe how poor enemy AI was and how unwieldy the aiming reticule was.

You'd have to be blind to not see the 'homage' to Gears and TR.

Bet Sony will hate them for saying it will use 100% of the PS3's power, as that means we should never expect to play a game as technologically demanding as Uncharted 2 in the PS3's lifetime. Oh well.

Luckily, there's a difference between using 100% of the power, and using 100% of the power well.

I always treat these kind of claims with a pinch of salt, I am looking forward to Uncharted 2 however, the first one is the best PS3 exclusive to date and yes that includes the snoozathon that was MGS4.
