"I bet you tried REALLY hard to hate Motorstorm though!"

What a rediculous thing to say! I'll judge a game once I've played it, not before.

"Clearly your taste is impeccable"

I have unique tastes, just like everyone else on this planet, but some people are happy to put up with substandard knockoffs, some aren't.

If you swap between characters, they will be ruining one of the best games on PS3.

"That is true, but every detail of combat was shamelessly cloned from Gears,"

Although, I must say when I first played Gears I was shocked at how much they'd ripped off GRAW.

Yes I enjoyed Surf's up for the brief period I played it, as it was the closest thing to SSX tricky available while my PS2 was on loan to my sister. I now have the genuine article back in my possesion (and a nice dose of RSI to go with it).

Also yes, I did enjoy it more than Uncharted. I'd prefer to play one mediocre game than 2 bad knockoffs bolted together.

I've got Uncharted and GOW2 right here.

To say the combat in Uncharted rivals Gears is really fucking stupid. I'm sorry, but there actually must be something wrong with your critical faculties if you truly believe this. Uncharted is loose, imprecise and has bullet-eating enemies that makes Bourne look like it's populated by children wearing bullseyes.

As good platforming as Tomb Raider? Purleeze. Again, try playing Tomb Raider again and take off those Sony designed specs. Again it's very hit and miss. It does it well, but not as well as something designed around it.

But it is a good game, because what it does - providing a lovely backdrop, the best acting and character animation in games yet - it does well. It's charming, it plays solidly if not spectacularly, but it's memorable because it draws you in through providing atmosphere and scripting that makes Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull look like a child playing with a camcorder. A great game. But please excuse me whilst I frown at the FUCKING HYPERBOLE that surrounds it.

There are some sections in Uncharted that have a bit instable framerate - I too hope that they will get it a bit more stable next time. However, you should make sure that the game runs at 720p - the 1080p mode that was added to the U.S. version (not sure it was ever added to the E.U. version?) to cater for 1080i only displays makes the game run a bit worse.

Also, yes, you do need to install that first patch that was released shortly after release, as I think that improved performance. I hate tearing, but after that update I've only seen framerate slowdown here and there personally.

Not so much. It's all gravy apart from challenges where you can't use your own vehicle (abaout 1/4 of the challenges I've done so far). The sucky vehicle handling renders these challenges essentially unplayable.

Loved the first - it was just a great adventure but...

GOW V's Uncharted? WTF!!!!

That's like the age old one comparing Sonic and Mario. Its pointless, they are two diffrent types of game.

I thought it was accepted wisdom that tearing was largely dependent on the tv you're using? This coupled with innate tolerance for it (or lack thereof) means one person's horrific tearing is hardly noticeable to someone else.

Or was that a different meeting?

Very much looking forward to this one. The original is definitely one of this year's best games. I'd prefer more exploration and puzzles over the combat tho. I thought there was a tad too heavy a focus on the shooting scenes which, although well, implemented, should have been toned down a little.
Also, I'd like it to be a little longer, or have larger areas to explore.

+1 to Squarejawhero. The gameplay in Uncharted is a bit repetitive, but the overall package was great. I loved the characterisation, the setting, and the script was probably the best I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing in a game. Do these things compensate for mostly one-note gameplay? Yes, I think they do.

As for the GoW v.s Uncharted thing: I played through GoW, disliked the boring characters, felt the one-note gameplay was okay but nothing special, and was immensely underwhelmed by the whole experience which had been greeted as the second coming by many magazines and even more 360 fans. I've not touched it since. I played through Uncharted, felt the one-note gameplay was okay but nothing special (although I personally preferred the looseness of the controls to the heavy-feeling marines in GoW), but loved the characters. I've since played through the whole game three more times because I enjoy the story so much.

For me, it's a clear win for Uncharted because it keeps on pulling me back for one more play-through. I've never craved playing through GoW again, but that's just my personal experience of the games. I thought that it might be worth adding a bit of balance to the general tone of 'GoW is an untouchable classic' in this thread. Yes, it's good, but if you prefer a good story and great script over homoerotic grunting space marines then that can heavily sway you towards Uncharted!

I find this 'we're gonna use all the power of the ps3' from ND very funny, especially when they've got the following comment on their own site.

Q) What percent of the PS2’s power are you using?
A) People think of systems as glasses and ask: “how full is the glass”. Unfortunately, that isn’t how it works. Any developer who gives you a “percent of system used” answer is blowing smoke. The truth is that every developer uses 100% of the systems power on every game. Some just get more out of that 100% than others. And game after game, we ALL get more out of systems than we did on the previous title. Think of it this way. If the system is a glass, some developers pour in rocks till the glass overflows and then call it quits. They would claim that they use 100% of the systems space. And it is true that no more rocks fit. Some will even put in a rock too many and the game plays slow or runs funny. But there is still some space left for smarter developers. They pour pebbles into the cracks left by the rocks, and they get more into the glass. Then they call it 100% full. But some Developers will then pour in sand, to fill the cracks between the pebbles. They get even more out of the system, yet it is still just 100% full. Some developers go the extra distance, and they pour in water. Then the glass is truly full, right? Sure, but just for this title, because some of the rocks can be replaced with pebbles that do the same thing, if you work hard at it. And some of the pebbles can be made into sand. And some sand can be pressed to water. No developer ever gets a glass filled with only water, no developer has that much time, so no developer truly fills the glass. We just get more and more out of the 100%.

Well, I find it a bit out of line to be judging farticus tastes. I also enjoyed Surf's Up, is a good kids game, it gives one a strange sense of relaxation. Banjo N&B, I am saving to play it during Xmas..., it sounds the right thing to do. Or maybe Gears of War...

Anyway, regarding Uncharted, from what I've seen and played, liked it a lot. Though, the X% used is bollocks. With 4-5 lines of code I put a 32 CPU server at my work on its knees (if I ever want to be fired, and maybe arrested...). It all depends on code's quality, imo.

everything starts from somewhere, was sonic a ripp cause mario did it first, cause if you say yes to that then all platform games are ripps of the first. so uncharted has a cover system WOW barstards using something thats been used for years by a hundred different games, what cunts!

and to all the fanboys xbox and ps3 get a life.

There is having combat 'in a simlar style' and there's 'blatant copyright-infringing wholesale facsimilie'. Uncharted falls in the latter category.

I'm always confused by "horrific screen tearing" quotes, either my eyes are so broken that I don't notice, which is entirely plausible, or maybe I'm actually immersed in the game, too busy enjoying it to notice the visuals (in which case they are wasted on me anyway), or, and I'm not sure if it makes a difference but it really does seem possible, my T.V. is better than the people that seem to hate the visuals.....the only negative visuals I noticed were to do with pop-in...mostly textures, like a leaf suddenly becoming a lot more detailed as Drake touched it.
