Ultima's Stygian Abyss expansion dated News

Mythic has announced that Ultima Online expansion Stygian Abyss will arrive this summer. The same add-on had been promised a release two years ago.

Stygian Abyss, the eighth expansion for the isometric MMO, adds the playable Gargoyle race that has unique Throwing, Imbuing and Mysticism skills. And there's the eponymous Stygian Abyss dungeon itself, which is the largest of any in Ultima Online, and home to the wickedly difficult Medusa, Primeval Lich and Stygian Dragon baddies.

The expansion also opens the Gargoyle homeland of Ter Mur for exploration, and introduces new areas where players can punch each other like rats.

Richard Garriott's legendary Ultima Online launched back in September 1997, and was completely re-clothed 10 years later to make use of much more powerful PC hardware. The essence remains, however, as our hands-on impressions of the revamped MMO will tell you.

Every time I see a mention of this it makes me think there's a remake/sequel for Ultima Underworld. Then my hopes are dashed.

Count me in the "OMG a new Ultima Underworld? Oh." camp.

That said, I never looked at that revamped UO until just now, and that actually looks pretty fun.

I played UO again for the first time since 1999 earlier this month - The people were friendly and helpful which scared me.

Yeah, when I read "Stygian Abyss" in the headline I also thought it was about Ultima Underworld 2. I was thinking "man, this news is old..."

I can remember thinking computer graphics could not get any better than Ultima Underworld 2.

I remember loving both of those games, but to be honest I very much doubt i finished either of them, I used to just tool around smacking goblins in the face with my axe. It never got old.

Ah, UU: The Stygian Abyss, came out before Wolfenstein 3D and had an incomparably better engine. Textured full 3D environment with 2D sprites (not to mention the excellent story and gameplay)...those were good times.
