UK Charts: LucasArts knocks itself off the top

KOTOR2 drops a place as its stablemate Mercenaries swoops into pole position in the UK.

Publisher LucasArts has debuted a second title in a row at number one in the UK, with PS2 and Xbox military action title Mercenaries taking the top spot and knocking Knights of the Old Republic 2 down to number two.

Mercenaries also topped the PlayStation 2 chart, knocking Sega's Sonic Mega Collection Plus from poll position in that ranking, but it couldn't unseat KOTOR2 from its place on top of the Xbox ranking.

Capitalising on the school mid-term break here in the UK, THQ's The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie rose three places to number three, while former chart topper Sonic Mega Collection Plus dropped back a single place to number four.

In terms of other new releases, Namco's Ace Combat 5: Squadron Leader, published in the UK by Sony Computer Entertainment, was the highest ranked title aside from Mercenaries, coming in at number 12 in the all-formats chart.

Tecmo's Xbox Live enabled beat 'em up Dead or Alive Ultimate, published here by Microsoft, came in at number 19, managing a number three ranking in the Xbox chart, while Ubisoft's Settlers: Heritage of Kings (PC) came in at number 39, completing the line-up of new releases.

It was another poor week for Nintendo's GameCube, however, with top-ranked Cube title Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat failing to dent the top 40 ranking.

This Friday is a quiet one for UK retail, with Sega's Altered Beast and Konami's Suikoden IV (both PS2) joining Koei's Samurai Warriors Xtreme Legends (PS2) and Nintendo's Mario Power Tennis (GC) in a slew of minor Japanese developed releases.

Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat failing to dent the top 40 is disgraceful. Its one of the most fun games ive played in years. Cant stop grinning when playing.

Isn't 'mid term break' the American term for it?
  • IronGiant #3 7 years ago

Ahh but with all the new cube owners after the Argos sale maybe we'll see new Cube titles do better.. ? maybe?
  • Feanor #4 7 years ago

Maybe, but what is the British term for it? I'm from NZ and I think mid-term break is what we call it.
  • sam_spade #5 7 years ago

Half-term is the phrase you are after.

I knock myself off all the time.

Hardly surprising though, is it? When a big 'mass-market-friendly' title like Metroid can't dent the top 40 you're hardly likely to shift 'bizarre-bongo-game' in any significant numbers, are you? :-)

Do I detect a certain hint of smugness in that comment? Not from Blerk, surely!
  • Blerk #10 7 years ago

No smugness intended! It'd be nice to have some more oddities in the charts... but it won't happen.
  • gamingdave #11 7 years ago

Im not suprised it didnt, but its still a disgrace.

Donkey Kong and his Bongos is a gimmick game. no wonder it didn't sell well. I've played some MErcenaries, it's pretty good, but KOTOR2 is better. Neither of em are a patch on Sam and Max: Freelance Police. Shame that last one is imaginary at the moment.

Have you actually played the DK game, or are you just dismissing it as a gimmick out of habit?
  • President_Weasel #14 7 years ago

i amit I haven't played it. I'm dismissing it as a gimmick due to the bongos.

Bongos are the future! Can't wait to see them incorporated into Chmpionship Manager - take over a spanish team and be one of those muppets in who turns up to a game with a drum!

    Other options:

Portsmouth fans get a bell controller to annoy every fucker within 250m of them.

Everton fans add to the experience with a stollen mobile phone controller.

And for the ultimate Galatasary managing experience - the 'bag of stale piss' controller to hurl at the screen.

It'll all add to the feeling of immersion in the game.

RE4 (PAL) will change things when released and Killer 7 as well later on this year. These are the 2 big Cube titles Nintendo are depending on.

DOA: U went in surprisingly low, IMO. I thought a game with women with 'large assets' would've stormed the charts in this day and age.

DOA:U is nothing more than a rehash with laggy online play plus the "boobies angle" is probably wearing a bit thin these days. Can't see hope for the next Tomb Raider title.

You and me both... it's going to take nothing short of a miracle to change the image of Tomb Raider to a point where anyone is going to take it remotely seriously.

It's possible, but I kinda doubt it. Still, I admit, it would be nice to get a GOOD Tomb Raider game for a change...

Maybe if they actually changed the game to some extent. You know, make it different to all the Tomb Raider games that came before it. Now that games like Prince of Persia are out, the Tomb Raider platforming just doesn't cut it anymore.
