UK charts: World at War still raging

Prince of Persia, Animal Crossing less so.

Call of Duty: World at War has notched up a fourth week in command of the UK All-Formats Chart. With just two weeks to go, looks like it's a strong contender to take the Christmas top spot.

Who will be the music chart companion, we wonder. Will it be Britney or Leona or Take That or Katy Perry? Or maybe Paul McCartney, who still manages to look like a cheeky boy even though he has jowls.

Anyway, Call of Duty: World at War has also marched past 1 million sales here in four weeks - half the time it took Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Animal Crossing Wii only managed to enter the chart at 26, while Ubisoft hopeful Prince of Persia spent its first week way down at 30.

The PC release of Grand Theft Auto IV made a minor splash to haul the massive-selling game back into the list at 22.

Elsewhere were few surprises: Mario Kart was at two, FIFA 09 solid at three, Brain Training up a touch to four, and Need For Speed muscled down to five.

Tomb Raider climbed slightly to six, Fallout 3 burst back at seven, Wii Fit took eight, Wii Play nine, and Guitar Hero: World Tour kept up momentum at 10.

Far Cry 2 was up from 28 to 17, Fable II climbed from 35 to 19, and there were rises (at last) for LittleBigPlanet and Mirror's Edge; the former went from 32 to 29, and the latter from 39 to 36.

This week waves goodbye to zombie shooter Left 4 Dead, but the uncounted Steam sales would presumably tell a different story.

Despite the reviews (saying it's the same game), I'm surprised AC:LGTTC hasn't done better. Pleased, but also surprised.
  • Dizzy #2 3 years ago

The more I play L4D the better it gets.
  • Eighthours #3 3 years ago

I'm pleased too, because such a lazy game shouldn't be rewarded. However, the model for Nintendo's software sales is totally different to that of Sony and Microsoft. Its games have absurdly long legs, so it's far from over for AC. A few telly adverts, and it'll probably jump into the Top Ten and stay there for months! So I wouldn't write its prospects off just yet.
  • mcbi4kh2 #4 3 years ago

Im also pleased that the advert for it from the front page has gone, automatically loading sound = big no no. Incredibly annoying.
  • muscleblade #5 3 years ago

Every 360 owner in hes/her right mind should get L4D.
  • Kazzahdrane #6 3 years ago

I bought L4D on PC at retail (gasp! was far cheaper than Steam...) and am loving it! There are games going on at work during lunchtimes so right now it's the game I want to play :)

So does this mean WW2 is the more popular FPS genre, regardless of quality?

Those Animal Crossing adverts on the TV are truly cringe worthy.

Whereas the LBP adverts are quite fun and suit the programme they are shown in.

Its a pity the the Prince of Persia has done so badly in its first week.
  • penhalion #10 3 years ago

Prince of persia is a beautiful joke of a game. With no consequences for anything, it's just not rewarding to play. The story isn't a patch on sands of time so you quickly get bored trying to save Elika's kingdom and start to wish you could just find your donkey and leave. Less than half way through the game, the light seeds become meaningless as you will already have all of the powers.

The quicktimes during combat get old real quick. Especially when, if you miss one, then Elika saves you and seems to systematically heal the enemy at the same time!
  • CallousB #11 3 years ago

"So LBP is going back up the chart eh?
    Hear that sony? ADVERTISING WORKS!"

Perhaps...although cutting the price from £45 to £25 probably helped more.
  • Monkey_Puncher #12 3 years ago

Agreed on the Animal Crossing advert from the frontpage, that made me want to strangle things everytime I came on the site last week.
  • beastmaster #13 3 years ago

Interesting to see where POP is and it's idea to 'dumb down'.

It's the kind of game that would not appeal to the 'casual masses' (that's what the Wii is for). So even though the reviews have been mostly good (if not great) all have highlighted it's easiness. Which seems to have alienated the hardcore too.

Tend to trust EG reviews more than others. Did think they got it wrong with both of Rare's Banjo outings but only because I got to play the demo.

  • kinky_mong #14 3 years ago

Every 360 owner in hes/her right mind should get L4D.

Never has a truer word been spoken.

At least with the majority of people buying the same game they did last year with WW2 clothes on most of the unpleasant people on Live are kept there and the L4D community is a joy to play with (In my personal experience anyway).
  • Lebowski #15 3 years ago

Good old Fallout 3, or GOTY as it's sometimes known. I'm glad to see Edge's 7/10 hasn't killed it off totally. :-D
  • menage #16 3 years ago

    Edge's 7/10 should be shot.

Really, all those critims where really negligible in a game that does so much right.

    GOTY by far.

  • captainrentboy #17 3 years ago

I still haven't played Fallout 3 yet, which is a bit of a crime baring in mind it's like £20 in Gamestation, everyone in work has it has their GOTY too.
But I've still got to finish GOW2, and I was also given a promo copy of Tomb Raider in work, as it was free I feel compelled to give it a bash. Anyone know if it's better than Legends? I've hated every other TR game, but for some reason I didn't mind Legends.
And I'm not sure why someone above said Animal Crossing might do better if it had more TV adverts, I've seen bloody loads of 'em :/ Not as many as Raving Rabbids mind.
  • Putty-Man #18 3 years ago

Great to see PGR4 shifting more units, awesome game.
  • stevetuck #19 3 years ago

Brain Training at number 4? we must be stupid here in the UK :/
  • makeamazing #20 3 years ago

Thanks CallousB for the all format charts, I prefer to see them in that method.

Nice to see Fallout 3 going back up :)
  • MuppetThumper #21 3 years ago

so you're one of the survivors at Eidos are you CaptainRentBoy?

I'm hoping TRU keeps on selling all the way to Xmas - I dont work for them (although I might have one stage) - but want to see the company survive. The heavy discounting they are doing can't be good for margins though.

Who would buy a game in the first 2 weeks of release these days? In nearly every case you can get it at least a tenner cheaper very shortly after release.
  • Daryoon #22 3 years ago

The winner of X-Factor, obviously. Which sadly won't be the glorious Danny E.
  • kinky_mong #23 3 years ago

Good old Fallout 3, or GOTY as it's sometimes known. I'm glad to see Edge's 7/10 hasn't killed it off totally. :-D

That boost is most likely because of Gamestation and other shops slashing it's price. I took full advantage of it and my mum's pleased that she doesn't have to put any effort into Christmas shopping now.
  • Feanor #24 3 years ago

"Ubisoft hopeful Prince of Persia spent its first week way down at 30."

    Pleased to hear it.

Man, the poms really do love their Need for Speed, no matter how crap it has become.
  • stevetuck #25 3 years ago

nice to see Fable 2 coming back up the charts... i bet the fact that it was under £20 at Gamestation was the main reason
  • Sean.Aaron #26 3 years ago

Great to see Wii Music still in the top 30; I suspect this will be another long time seller.
