UK charts: Smash Bros. is smash hit News

Super Smash Bros. Brawl has headbutted its way to the top of the UK all formats chart this week, thumping previous leader LEGO Indiana Jones down to three.

The much anticipated game is the third-largest UK Wii launch behind Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii.

Below it, lots of new entries considerably shook-up the list: Battlefield: Bad Company was in second place, Big Beach Sports posed at five and Beijing Olympics crossed the line at nine.

Wii Fit jumped enormously from 27 to four thanks to some stock turning up, Metal Gear Solid 4 slid from two to six, and Mario Kart Wii boosted from 11 to seven.

Top Spin 3 managed to better its seeding from 12 to eight this week, and Grand Theft Auto IV rounded out the star performers at 10.

Just outside the top flight were new entries Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and The Bourne Conspiracy at 14 and 15, respectively. Interestingly, Guitar Hero III trailed the fresh series instalment at 16.

Even further down at 31 was Kane's Wrath, which re-enters thanks to the Xbox 360 release, and Kung Fu Panda that just makes the list and debuts at 40.

Other big movers were Alone in the Dark falling down a dark hole from three to 17, GRID braking hard from eight to 18, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII stumbling from 10 to 23, and Civilization Revolution regressing from 13 to 24.

This week waves goodbye to Ninja Gaiden II and UEFA Euro 2008.

What about Okami?
I bought it 2 days before I bought Brawl and it occured to me that nobody was going to buy it due to the stupid time it was released and the fact that it wasn't hyped enough; just like when it was on the PS2. It's a real shame and it should be experienced.

Why is Sonic and the Secret Rings there? Who's buying it? Why are more people buying it than Mario Kart DS? I don't understand people.

I don't think Wii Okami even made the All-Formats Top 20 which is a crying shame as it deserved to do well after being overlooked on the PS2. Although I like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, I have to confess to being underwhelmed by the game as a whole due to its startling similarity to Mellee. Feels more like a remix than a bona fida sequel and as such I don't think it's quite the triple A game people make it out to be but it is a fun if simplistic game with a generous amount of content. It's no surprise to me that it's at the number one spot.

Well I bought Okami when it came out! And rightly so, it's bloody awesome! Disappointing to not see it even reach the top 40, but I also didn't see ANY adverts for it whatsoever. Why would Nintendo bother when they have Smash Bros? I also caved and bought Smash Bros - my protest didn't fare very well!

Will be picking up Battlefield in the future! Perhaps once I finish Okami...

Wow. No less than 14 nintendo exlusives - 6 on the DS, 8 for the Wii and 2 (Cooking Mama I & II) for both. In the top ten, Nintendo titles have 4 slots. That is pretty impressive: they must be making a lot of money.

By comparison, there's only 2 Sony exclusives - (6th and 23rd). Microsoft sort of has one exclusive; Football Manager (for Xbox 360 and PC) in 33rd. Then again, I guess all of the multiformat titles sell better on the Xbox than on the PS3, in the UK at least. Shame we can't get charts for Europe combined, that would be interesting - as would seeing the numbers sold for each platform, or a percentage or whatever, for the multiplatform titles.

You could argue that Wii Fit and Big Beach Sports are 'casual titles' (I hate that term) but with six games in the top ten, including some multi-platform games, it's about time people got rid of the 'Wii doesn't count because it's totally different' rubbish. There are also some pretty decent exclusives performing well so I'd have to say that Nintendo's spot is entirely deserved, even though I predicted a massive failure. It's a shame that Okami still doesn't perform well, even though it's currently out on the most popular console.

With that amount of Wii titles in the chart, it is amazing that there are still people desperately clinging to the old 'it doesn't count', 'not really 'next gen'', 'it's all mini-games', 'people just buy it for Wii Sports', 'it's just for Grannies and kids' etc. thoughts, and this should silence them.

But it won't. Their loss.

Gonna be blunt here, despite not actually liking the series that much and stuff... But MGS4, down to 6th? Ouch.

Personally, I would have rather it stay in the top 5/3 for longer. I have no idea why, but I am somehow saddened by the slight dive it's taken.

Just noticed that Alone in the Dark has dropped to 17th place! Ouch, that'll surely upset Atari as it didn't even manage to top the charts.

And people (here) will still insist that Wii owners don't buy games.
