UK charts: PES 2010 overturns FIFA 10

Forza 3, Borderlands, SmackDown appear.

Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 has overturned a rampant FIFA 10 to take the UK all-formats top 40 crown. The PS3 had the lion's share (66 per cent) of the sales.

Though ahead this week, the latest PES still forfeits a yard in quality to EA's creation.

There are three more newcomers in the top 10 today: Forza Motorsport 3 at two, WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2010 at five and Borderlands at seven.

In-between those entrants are FIFA 10 at three, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games at four and the brilliant Uncharted 2 at six.

Wii Sports Resort, Need for Speed: Shift and Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising round out the top 10.

EyePet is the only other top 40 newcomer this week at 18. The PSP verison of Chinatown Wars lands at four on its platform-specific chart, while Lips: Number One Hits has a dismal week, placing at 16 on the Xbox 360 list. Fairytale Fights is missing on all charts.

    how does smackdown vs raw sell better than borderlands?
  • Toothball #2 2 years ago

    @JahB:

    The power of the franchise it seems.

    DS3 pad is for me is def better for football games for some reason, everything else tho its 360 one. I will be picking up PES10 soon.
  • GamerG #4 2 years ago

    Not surprised PES is a much bigger seller on PS, there was next to no legacy from Xbox and the hard core PES players are tied into the playstaion controller.

    donnie080208 'i was expecting...'

    You always expect sht and never ever get it right. Why don't you just stfu FOREVER.

    Just because you can move your fingers and type that crap, fdoesn't mean you should son.
  • MeBrains #6 2 years ago

    pes sold more on ps3, because footbal fans tend to like Playstation (how many years does Sony sponsor UEFA already?) - much like FPS fans tend to like 360.
  • The-Bodybuilder #7 2 years ago

  • GamerG #8 2 years ago

    @MeBrains

    That would only work if it wasn't for the fact Fifa clearly was best selling on Xbox360

    Borderlands outsold by Wrestling?

    *face palm*

    I didn't realise that homoerotic ballet nonsense was still popular outside of America.

  • GamerG #12 2 years ago

    Sony's biggest and best pushed game of the holiday Uncharted 2 could not knock of the 3 week old Fifa from the top of the all formats chart so I dont see why people thought Forza would knock off the multi platform Pes in its opening week.

    Football is quite popular in the UK afterall and PES still has its legions of fans.

    I fully expect Forza to be top of the individual chart though and think its release may have something to do with the disparity between the PS3 sales being much more than that of the 360's for PES2010

    I'm sure these comments threads have taken a turn for the worst over the last few months. They were bad before but seem to be going the way of places such as the Gamespot or IGN forums...
  • JahB #14 2 years ago

    @Toothball
    i had no idea the WWE franchise was so popular outside of the states, you barely even see these games on shelves over here on the continent.

    "I didn't realise that homoerotic ballet nonsense was still popular outside of America."

    Maybe the Americans and Brits aren't that different after all... ;)
  • udat #16 2 years ago

    Borderlands is astonishingly addictive, it will hopefully have a long tail.
  • Les #17 2 years ago

    I'm surprised at EyePet coming in at #18 TBH. Didn't think it would make the chart at all.
  • riz23 #18 2 years ago

    I don't think PES is going to stay long up there. The hardcore faithful have just gone and bought it but will it remain a constant burner like FIFA and Wii Fit? I don't think so.
    As for Smackdown outselling Borderlands, it's hardly surprising that a multi-format mass market brand like that outsells an unknown quantity. Regardless of how good Borderlands may be. Just be thankful, it keeps the tards to a minimum when you play co-op!

  • NorUraeus #21 2 years ago

    @GamerG: Think you are mistaken, every sales chart I have seen so far the PS3 version of FIFA has outsold the Xbox360 version quite significantly. Think the last numbers I saw put PS3 version at 1.1 million in Europe with the Xbox360 version trailing at 800K.
  • miiiguel #22 2 years ago

    @NorUraeus : In UK 360's Fifa10 seems to be selling more than PS3's. Considering all Europe, most likely PS3 is doing better, MS thinks the World starts and ends in UK/US.

    @GamerG: Mostly vgchartz and misc online articles. And even if the vgchartz numbers are estimates based on a small sample they do tend to be fairly correct.
  • Erebu #26 2 years ago

    Interesting to see how Uncharted 2 has surpressed Borderlands sales on PS3, and Forza 3 PES10 sales on X360.
  • miiiguel #27 2 years ago

    360 Borderland's is a big success in USA, as far as I know it sold out.
  • GamerG #28 2 years ago

    @NorUraeus

    so by "every chart I have seen" you actually meen the guess work done by VGchartz?

    ok
  • thedaveeyres #29 2 years ago

    Borderlands really is tremendous.
  • kinky_mong #30 2 years ago

    Borderlands definitely deserves to sell well because it is a fantastic game, so being beat by a wrestling game is a bit disappointing.
  • freakzilla #31 2 years ago

    I am fan of football but the success of these games does not please me, as good as fifa and PES 10 might be be they're only small improvements over the previous instalment.

    I'd rather see something like borderlands or UC2 take the top spot.
  • Toothball #32 2 years ago

    @JahB:

    Yeah, you don't tend to think there's a lot of wrestling fans about until something like this happens. It's really just a big soap opera for men, so you often get the same crowd coming back for more I guess.
  • PlugMonkey #33 2 years ago

    Borderlands is a new franchise with a peculiar mix of gameplay styles that deperately needs a demo releasing to help people like me decide which format to buy. That, and the fact it's not out on PC yet, can't really be helping.
  • NicolasVH #34 2 years ago

    @donnie080208 I think the fact that you can use option files in the PlayStation 3 version and not in the Xbox 360 version is a big argument for gamers who own both consoles.
  • des #35 2 years ago

    Just like i have said last week,PES is on top,but it has sold much less then last year,40% less...Konami must do something next year,PES userbase is getting smaller and smaller and console numbers are up... Fifa effect

    And Borderlands is turbo-awesome,true sleeper hit.

  • Feanor #36 2 years ago

    Where did you get those numbers from?
  • NorUraeus #37 2 years ago

    @GamerG: All the numbers provided for sales are guesswork my friend, the only difference is the size of the sample they extrapolate their numbers from.
  • des #38 2 years ago

    Chart-Track PR
    "Konami’s ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2010’ doesn’t manage to match the launch of its predecessor, selling 39% less in its first week across the same formats (PS3/XB360 and PC)"

    EG sales reports are always a bit shoddy,most important piece is always left out,Chart-Track PR...just click on Chart-Track website

    And there is no guessing in Chart-Track,they report exactly what they cover,their coverage is over 90%,i think

  • davisorle #39 2 years ago

    @MeBrains
    You tend to talk without knowing. The fact that Fifa has sold way more on the 360 only proves again that ppl that buy PS consoles do it out of habit and tradition and they dont know much better than buying also the same IPs in remakes. Fifa is a better game anymore the past couple of years. I used to love PES and hate Fifa cause it was lame and way too easy. Like why everyone else did too, even if Fifa looked so much better. Anyhow, Think before you talk really. Advice purely.

    No surprise there ( on topic ). PES was meant to sell cause it still has a huge fanbase. I used to be in it :). Came out wrong week for Forza since it didnt let it get the first spot even if its first in individual charts game/console. I got Fifa.. I got Forza yet I havent had time to play more than a bit Forza. Fifa i havent even played yet. I know ill get also PES just for the old times sake.

    I bought both FIFA and PES for the PS3 primarily because of the controller (sold FIFA since, because I didn't like it) and also because I didn't want the fan noise of my 360 to 'add' to the stadium atmosphere. Sorry, for bringing up that old argument, but since you dug out that lame old 'habit and tradition' bullshit as if you were Mr. market-researcher himself, I thought it was only fair to do so.
  • groovychainsaw #45 2 years ago

    Glad to see borderlands getting in the top 10 at least (against stiff competition from a slew of popular sequels) - with reports of it selling out in the US, sounds like its got on pretty well. Which is good, because its all im playing at the moment... and i'd probably like some more once I'm done :-)

    @donnie, I wasn't whining about that *fact*, as matter of fact while I can sometimes suffer the consequences of living in a country which is still very imature in the video-games scene (it's completly seen as a kids hobby, and even the *kids* are quite ill-informed and have a "sheep behavior";), I think it's fair, we get what we give, and I and few others can't do much to change things.
    I live in a place where - *generally*: video-games=PS; where ppl say 360 doesn't have HD games because it has no Blu-Ray; Footy games=PES; NFS is the best driving game ever, and so on.
    And while US/UK also have these crowd they seem to have quite a chunk (and growing) of a bit more ecletic ppl.
  • MeBrains #47 2 years ago

    davisorle: I tend to talk based on an interest in games for the better part of 30 years. I used to read Zapp monthly, C&VG, Joystick (French), Joypad (French), Edge - a few others, but I can not call them having read "monthly". Now, I check gaming news on a daily basis on the netz. How long have you been reading about it?

    my educated guess about footie fans preferring PS3 is because of its UEFA (it is UEFA, right?) Sony is sponsoring for over a decade (? - at least since PS2). I am not interested in footie (games) at all, so I did not look it up this time. GamerG told me wrong, so I accept his correction, hence the "my bad" in my reply to him. Although NorUraeus seem to think that indeed footie sells more on PS3 than on 360. Anyhows, it all has to do with installed base as well...
  • MeBrains #48 2 years ago

    donnie: the US of course is significant. Something else which is: 360 has indeed been increasing its lead - in the US. It has been losing its lead _everywhere_ else.
  • frankfurter209 #49 2 years ago

    ^Shitty EA rehashes? Surely, you mean Activision
  • Les #50 2 years ago

    "also the u.k. is europes biggest console market as well,this is why the 360 still leads the ps3 by 8 mil and it has gained NO ground on it since launch."

    So now you're ready to admit that PS3 sells equally to the 360 (corrected for launch)? Because you're right, since their respective launches, PS3 and 360 sell about equal (a.k.a. crap). MS's true advantage over Sony is that is has been able to convince the world that it's crap sales are actually good, while Sony's crap sales are perceived as disastrous...

    It's only since the recent price drop that PS3 shows signs of gaining some real ground. And it remains to be seen whether these signs materialize. But of course, as the respective installed bases increase at an equal rate, the absolute difference (the 8M) matters less and less, except of course for titles targeted to a specific region (which happens less and less given the ridiculous development cost associated with both consoles).
  • DjFlex52 #51 2 years ago

    @Les

    Your comments still ring pretty hollow. The whole objective of Ninty & MS in this generation was to topple Sony from its video game global domination of last generation. Since the Wii has outsold Gamecube and 360 outsold Xbox while Sony PS3 is 95 million behind PS2....Mission Accomplished!

    People can rant about the lack of games from Nintendo and MS' defective hardware problems but when it all said and done if you add Nintendo & MS' installed base, it will eventually add up to the PS2's installed base.

    @donnie#

    What are you talking about? Slightly better than terrible (xbox = terrible, 360 is slightly better, guess I need to spell it out for you) is good all of a sudden?! The 360 has been underperforming since day 1, with MS revising sales targets downwards all the time. After a drastic and early price drop sales started to reach levels originally anticipated: woohoo :/

    The only thing that makes it look good to people that don't care to think (so 90% of the world population and all of the video game press) is that the PS3 performs even worse compared to expectations. But we're talking business here, not sports. Last gen, xbox took distant second place and made no money, this gen it looks set to take distant second place and make no money (it might even drop to 3rd and make no money).

    But I especially love this remark of yours: "you can not ignore last gen figures,when messuring todays sucess". That's crazy, which I don't hold against you this time (I assume you don't know better so I will educate you). Past returns are no guarantee for the future as every proper financial advisor will tell you. Each and every project is judged on its return (the money it generates, expressed in today's money relative to its risk profile but let's not get too technical, isn't needed here). Not on whether its return is better (or less bad) than the return on the previous project.

    The 360 and PS3 are both financial disasters. The fact that 360 might be a smaller financial disaster than the PS3 is hardly something to gloat about. Unless you're an idiot that is.
  • GreyBeard #54 2 years ago

    @DJFlex

    I'd agree with you that MS objective this generation was to topple Sony, but Nintendo?

    The whole point of the Wii was not to compete on like-for-like terms with the other two platforms, and its worked out really damn well for them. Its like a cat watching two big dogs scrap it out in the yard, while they are busy chewing lumps off each other its casually eating their lunches!

    Sony screwed up with their arrogance and complacency, while MS have been so intent on destroying Sony they've failed to grow their own platform much beyond what it was last generation!
  • Les #55 2 years ago

    "The whole point of the Wii was not to compete on like-for-like terms with the other two platforms, and its worked out really damn well for them."

    It's a bit more complicated than that. Nintendo acknowledged that just continuing with the heretofore common hardware spec wars was a dead end as consumers didn't want to pay for powerful machines. And as a company, they couldn't afford creating a high spec machine that might not sell in sufficient numbers. So they tried to change the game and the Wii was born.

    Sony was very successful with PS2, MS has never exactly been known for innovation so looked at the most successful machine of the current gen and tried to emulate that in the next gen. So both companies came up with a next gen PS2 as their new offering.

    But Nintendo changed the market dynamics and the PS2 clones failed.
  • RobotRocker #56 2 years ago

    People should remember this week that PES2010 was also the recipient of supermarket slash deal. Tesco were selling both PS3 and 360 versions for £25/€30 on launch day. Forza 3 was going for £30/€40 as well. Pretty good job for Konami too since the cheap price has the people who left around PES6 sniffing back around. And it was a bonus to not have to pay the absurd prices stores were looking for Forza 3 (£70 for the SE? You have to be kidding right? Particularly since Blockbuster had pre-order stock of the SE for £40 as well. Granted, still the same as a full price game, but hey. Free 2GB pen drive)

    Oh, wait a minute. Whats this? Reduced price games bring thought dead franchise rocketing back to the top of the charts? Well, I never could have expected that now, could I?
