UK charts: MW2 celebrates 8 weeks on top

Stagnant list to be shaken by busy Q1?

Activision's Modern Warfare 2 has dominated the UK all-formats chart for an eighth consecutive week - the longest unbeaten run since Need for Speed: Underground 2 in 2004.

The 53rd week of 2009, ended 2nd January, welcomed no new releases, although the tides of Christmas shoppers jiggled proceedings, a bit.

On the up were Assassin's Creed II (2), Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (3), Wii Sports Resort (4) and Wii Fit Plus (5). FIFA 10 slipped (6) and was chased hard by Just Dance (7), New Super Mario Bros. Wii (8), Mario Kart Wii (9) and Avatar (10).

Hardly surprising, as there's next to no competition from new titles other than Assasin's Creed - which obviously doesn't hold the same mainstream appeal.

NSMB Wii made me use my Wii for the first time in months and was well worth it. A fantastic game.
  • darkmorgado #3 2 years ago

It's annoying that Activision's arrogance has been supported by sales figures for what is actually a very mediocre game. I unfortunately bought it when it came out, played it the same day, and it has not been switched on since then. Truly mediocre game, apalling story, and broken multiplayer.

i still dont understand why the single format chart isn't used. it is much more interesting to see what has sold by format rather than bunched together.
  • menage #5 2 years ago

I seriously hope all the new cool games this month shake things up. MW2 is getting ridiculous, and imo isn't worth the hype.
  • bad09 #6 2 years ago

    @darkmorgado

It is annoying (and I 'em gave £30 to!). Activison are bastards and IW somehow ruined pure genius, but look, it's 2010 so lets forget the ugliness of 2009. So many GOOD games coming this year I hardly care I feel ripped off by MW2 with it's OK SP (with some kind of Story not sure what about though) and useless MP and downright AWFUL PC port.

I won't pay out for COD this year but you know what, I won't need to...
  • thedaveeyres #7 2 years ago

MW2 is a brilliant package, with the best multiplayer ever seen on a console, imho. Fully deserves to reign at the top of the charts well into 2010.
  • Goffee #8 2 years ago

Is MW2 still cheap anywhere? Now I have some time to play it...
  • fknetwork #9 2 years ago

Well done MW2, well deserved, fantastic game!
  • chrisola #10 2 years ago

How is the MW2 multiplayer broken?

    Oh wait, it isn't!
  • secombe #11 2 years ago

As has been said many times, the individual chart is almost always far more interesting, why not show us both?
  • M_of_the_sys #12 2 years ago

What's so interesting about the single formats chart?
  • Quixz #13 2 years ago

So much hate for MW2, I personally enjoyed the game very much and still do.
  • Sid-Nice #14 2 years ago

Just Dance Wii is No3 in individual chart...

    Now that is interesting.
  • NeonStorm #15 2 years ago

I did enjoy MW2. But in a perfect world, Bayonetta would knock it off its perch next week.
  • thedaveeyres #16 2 years ago

You can't win, opinion-haters. If you mark me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.
  • Gunwing #17 2 years ago

While I own MW2 on my PC and I fail to see whats wrong with the online system I must say it's got a steep learning curve in it's own right. Sure it's not Killzone 2, or Uncharted but it's got it where it counts in my book. Just saw my first nuke in the MP and it was sweet as hell.

MY biggest complaint is how slanted the story was. It was clearly built back during the bush years in the US, when it was seen as OK to be totally incorrect about the rest of the world, and that money is better then your life type bull crap. I mean why in gods name do all the Russians use Tavors? They would be using Russian weapons. Also sense when dose Russia have 500,000 Spetznaz????
  • jim1975 #18 2 years ago

funny how the only people that hate MW2 are forum dwellers. everyone i speak to in the real world loves it. my XBL friends list has been dominated by it since it came out and will most likely be that way till the next one.
  • SYS64738 #19 2 years ago

"ahh sorry to hear that, you must have it on PS3 or maybe PC? - purely because I've got it on 360 and love the game. Sure it has its faults but I'd never say that the story was appalling or that the multiplayer is broken (??)

Again, this is probably because I have the 360 version"

That comment made me chuckle... in disbelief...

Nevermind, I've played this on a mate's PS3 only, and while I had some brief moments of fun playing co-op against the AI (we both suck too much online), I cannot for the love of my life figure out what MW2 does that hasn't been done before (and has been done better before). Besides I'm not a big fan of the run-gun-die-respawn mechanics at all but that's a matter of taste.
Oh and did MW2 really include a story? Never noticed...
  • bad09 #20 2 years ago

"funny how the only people that hate MW2 are forum dwellers. everyone i speak to in the real world loves it....."

The "real world", whatever that is, also thought the Crazy Frog was great, also thinks Big Brother and X-factor are quality TV programming, also thinks it's cool Ant & Dec play their Wii in the pub with Fatfighters. Socially acceptable is not 100% proof of quality.....

Anyway it wasn't a bad game as such, just to many gamers MP is a pale comparison of what came before and (I seriously doubt anyone would disagree) we got a very very poor PC port. Especially considering the way Activision upped the price and their just plain stupid claims about the quality of the game.

Had a little look at this at my brother's place at Christmas and have to admit it left me feeling like I hadn't really missed out on anything. It doesn't bring anything new to the franchise or the genre in its lackluster and criminally short single player campaign the and multiplayer is without a doubt the most unbalanced and frustrating gaming experience I've had for quite some time. All in all it's pretty overrated.

With two months under its belt I feel this game will likely have reached the point where everyone who is going to adopt it early has done so and it will fall from the chart very quickly, especially with the big titles of this quarter coming in thick and fast over the next few weeks.
  • Fab4 #23 2 years ago

"While I own MW2 on my PC and I fail to see whats wrong with the online system... Just saw my first nuke in the MP and it was sweet as hell."

This is what is wrong with it. As for it having a steep learning curve...do me a favour...its a game aimed at people who couldnt hit a barn door at 5 paces. Its no longer about good reflexes and map knowledge...its about perks and kill streaks....its about those 'sweet nukes'....its FPS for the Wii Generation.
  • Mkwone #24 2 years ago

Them Lego games must be racking in the cash. I mean i love them but some of those have been out a few years. It's not even as if they're christmas re-entries as they're constantly in the charts, not usually too high but certainly usually there.

Indeed it does, total domination by 360, 17 titles.

Why not include the individual format charts by value while we are at it

  • EmiliasHorse #29 2 years ago

I just completed OneChanbara which I picked up for £4.98....it was shit...But I enjoyed it more and the story was better than MW2's. Admittedly I pressed skip most of the time, but the gist was ..... ermm zombies and stuff needing a good poking with a sword.

I was getting my fingers warmed up for Bayonetta.

    Rajaa

I think darmorgado is referring to broken MP on PC (given it was only given the dumbed down console approach, it's a fair point especially when you're used to PC multiplayer games with dedicated server support etc.), also he just doesn't seem to find the game *fun* which surely even the almighty and powerful 360 couldn't sort out for him (your post read like it could but maybe that was just a misunderstanding on my part).

Don't get me wrong I don't hate MW2 but I found it overwhelmingly underwhelming, particularly given the hype and cheek from Activision to up the price compared to other titles. I expected it to be the dog's bollox that could make coke out of pepsi but instead just saw another generic run-gun-respawn shooter.
  • EmiliasHorse #31 2 years ago

The problems for the PC continue. MW2 and AC2 both out on 3 platforms, while 360 & PS3 versions both make it into the top ten where are the PC versions?

A glance at the PC chart reveals good old Football Manager & Sims 3 + Expansion doggedly holding the top 3 slots... as did Sims 2 / Sims + Champ Manager whatever year you bother to recall. Bored me when I used to care, too old to let it get to me.

Oh go on for old times sake....PC owners - Sims 3 has been out for ages, it is very good but for f**ks sake if you have not already bought it why not?..same for Football Manager, it is a great waste of time but really..honestly must you keep buying it?

    And relax...
  • bad09 #32 2 years ago

    @Emilia'sHorse

    1. AC2 is not hitting PC until March.

    2. With PC the charts will always be crap next to consoles as DD is not tracked. MW2 as an example sold something like only 3% on PC from retail, yet it's been in the top sellers on Steam since launch, hell it even managed to stay in the top ten all the way through the insane prices of the winter sale!

From this year DD will be tracked though so should be interesting to see how things really are in PCland.

@darkmorgado, "Truly mediocre game, apalling story, and broken multiplayer."

At the moment you have +24 next to your comment, well done! Are all of you guys elitists or what? Think what you like about the all-over-the-place single-player portion of the game, but come on, MW2 multiplayer is absolutely fantastic. While I haven't played the PC version, I think the multiplayer on consoles is far from broken and just about the most balanced console shooter ever. I never played the first Modern Warfare online, so MW2 feels extremely original to me as far as console shooters go. The perks, the killstreaks, the endless number of funny emblems and titles to unlock, it's all designed to reward players who are willing to invest a lot of time in the game. And 60 fps is 60 fps: no other console shooter can touch it from a pure technical standpoint. It makes all the difference in the world. I used to think Halo 3 was slick but trying it out after MW2 was a horrendous experience. And somebody else mentioned Killzone 2... give me a break. Slowzone it should be called.

@SYS64738, "I cannot for the love of my life figure out what MW2 does that hasn't been done before (and has been done better before)"

For the sake of argument, please mention one such game on a console.

@Fab4, "Its no longer about good reflexes and map knowledge...its about perks and kill streaks....its about those 'sweet nukes'....its FPS for the Wii Generation."

Getting a decent killstreak in MW2 actually does call for very good reflexes, map knowledge, a lot of skill, teamwork and a bit of luck. How long have you played the game? Thus far I've clocked in about 30 hrs online and the longest streak I've managed to achieve was only 10 kills. Never seen anyone use a nuke yet and I believe it's exceedingly rare to happen. In my experience the killstreak rewards don't make the game too unbalanced because indoors you are almost always perfectly safe from them.

At the end of the day, the aspect of MW2 that really pushes all the right buttons for me is the logical feedback you get from the game. When I die in a hectic firefight I always know just why I died and just how the opponent was better than me. It doesn't matter an awful lot what gun you use, since people drop dead after only a few hits, giving the game a sufficient illusion of realism. Games in the vein of Halo where people jump like bunnies on crack to dodge bullets feel retarded after MW2.

So I reckon that Modern Warfare 2 outsold New Super Mario Bros. Wii by quite a bit. I guess Reggie lost his bet here in the UK. :-P
  • solidSnake04 #35 2 years ago

jesus is incredible how COD Modern Warfare still is in that list !
  • SYS64738 #36 2 years ago

    @NoKamiFujiwara

I judged MW2 as a game in general, not platform specific, and as such it didn't do anything new that wasn't done in a shooter before. The airport scene is the only thing I remember this for, which isn't exactly a good thing, at least IMO.

I see you're limiting your views to consoles, which is fine, but you need to appreciate that a lot of people have standards that are based on playing FPS's on the PC, where FPS's such as MW2 have a lot more competition - in fact MW2's direction to MP is backwards (lack of dedicated servers - I don't know if you've ever played on those before but there are numerous benefits that players have become accustomed to - hence many people referring to the dumbed down console approach shoehorned on the PC version as being 'broken' MP).
  • NoKamiFujiwara #37 2 years ago

    @SYS64738

I see your point now. Despite my console background, I do fully understand the benefits of supporting dedicated servers. Who knows, the netcode of the PC version might have more problems than the console ones, but I think that in comparison to any other peer-hosted shooter MW2 does its job really well.

Lag issues aside, wouldn't you agree that leveling up guns and abilities is especially well done in Modern Warfare 2 and something that is, to this sort of extent, still fairly rare in first-person shooters on any platform?
  • cyber_nicco #38 2 years ago

What IS the problem with MW2? I here vague complaints about story and multiplayer, but not any actual critique.

I enjoyed the story, and the multiplayer is excellent. There is a ton of variety in the MP, and while it is not easy, it is not too difficult to play against others once you put some time in it. What I find especially welcome in multiplayer is the addition of leveling other facets of gameplay and the weapon bling is awesome. I only wish I could put THREE attachments on my firearms. Are you listening, IW? Let me add all that don't conflict as a reward for mastering a weapon - not just extended mags...

Anyway, for those of you on the fence, go out and buy it.
