UK charts: GTA IV steals number one spot

Viva Piñata back. Full top 40 inside.

Grand Theft Auto IV has unsurprisingly romped to the top of the UK Charts after five days on sale.

It amassed a whopping 926,000 sales and went on to break all sorts of industry records overseen by Cheryl Baker and Kris Akabusi.

The rest of the top five was Nintendo-dominated with Wii Fit at two, Mario & Sonic at the Olympics at three, Wii play at four and Mario Kart Wii at five.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue was at six, followed by Pro Evolution Soccer at seven, Call of Duty 4 at eight and Brain Training at nine. Rainbow Six Vegas 2 rounded out this week's high-flyers at 10.

The only other new entry this week was movie tie-in Iron Man at 11, although plenty of oldies managed to surge back into the limelight: Forza 2 re-entered at 25, Cooking Mama was back at 33, My Word Coach spelled 36, Viva Piñata made 38, Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree took 39 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories finished the list at 40.

Big movers and shakers this week were Wii Play climbing from 15 to 4, and Halo 3 up from 31 to 22. On the flip side, UEFA Euro 2008 fell from 9 to 19, and SEGA Superstars Tennis tumbled from 7 to 21.

All of which means we say goodbye to SmackDown Vs. Raw 2008, Condemned 2, Football Manager 2008, Time Crisis 4, Dark Sector, LEGO Star Wars and Army of Two.

I can see the top 5 looking a lot like this for a loooong time.
  • Dizzy #2 4 years ago

Good for Viva Piñata :) One of the best games this gen.

Why is it back? Pack in? Discount?

    "Imagine: Babies (DS)"

NO! Just No!!! You do NOT want to imagine babies.
  • Zomoniac #3 4 years ago

One of the pre-set pack-in bundles for 360 was Forza 2 plus controller, and the other was Forza 2, Viva Pinata plus controller. So it would appear GTA did have an impact on 360 system sales.

Was there ever any doubt about the first two spots?
  • bengray66 #5 4 years ago

Im pleased to see Viva back. It shows that despite the 360's image, there are still sensible people seeking innovation on consoles other than the Wii.

And as if we didn't know GTA4 would be first, but in my opinion, if they carry on, they need something fresh. Rehash does not work forever!

still not changing that format list on pro ev are we?
  • QPRobbie #7 4 years ago

ADD THE F***ING WII TO THE PRO EVO LISTING!! IT'S THE ONE THAT'S SELLING!!!

    Jeez
  • Wash #8 4 years ago

Woe is me at some of that list.

Good to see Viva Pinata agen, criminally overlooked. One of the best looking games of this gen to...
  • anomagnus #9 4 years ago

fuck me, didnt see that one coming, GTA4 no 1???

i thought it might peg in around 8 or 9! But number 1? AMAZING......
  • WinterSnowblind #10 4 years ago

Viva Pinata is actually selling well now?
Maybe they'll finally release that DLC..?
  • Phreez #11 4 years ago

Argos were selling both Forza 2 and Viva for £10 a piece. Bargains.
  • Dizzy #12 4 years ago

    >Viva Pinata is actually selling well now?

TBH it has sold quite a bit in the end. Slow but steady.
  • Grunk #13 4 years ago

I'm surprised wii fit is in number 2 spot, since you can't actually buy it anywhere
  • septimus #14 4 years ago

How can Wii Fit be at 2? It doesn't exist in this dimension.

Drip feed us with games nintendo, then don't supply properly. Thanks.
  • gingerlink #15 4 years ago

problem with wii fit is they've got to produce the peripheral as well, they can't just print off disk after disk...

The apparent brawl shortages in Japan shouldn't have happened though..
  • neil_likes_bums #16 4 years ago

Argos are also giving away forza 2 and viva pinata with new 360 consoles, might count for something :)
  • djed #17 4 years ago

haha i see mario! not nearly enough mario, though. this top 40 list needs more mario. mario should go multi-platform.
  • AHiFi #18 4 years ago

Nice to see Halo 3 bounce back in, if only on the back of big hardware sales from GTA IV.
  • sergeantdisco #19 4 years ago

Viva is a great game, one of those that you can always spend five more minutes playing, until you realise it's 3am and you have to.......fuck it, five more minutes won't hurt.
  • secombe #20 4 years ago

Amazing Mario Kart and Wii Fit sales considering how damn hard they are to get. Must be a lot of persistant people out there!
  • CARL05 #21 4 years ago

It's obvious why Viva Pinata is back...
it's cos people have been buying it as a joke for their depressed mate who couldn't get GTA4 on release day!!!

"We know u wanted drugs, sex and gore... but it was sold out so we got you Viva Pinata instead!" lol
  • jonsaan #22 4 years ago

Viva Pinata is an absolutely fantastic game.
  • miiiguel #23 4 years ago

MrED209, at "uber-level" stage in the game I didn't have to mate "lesser" creatures anymore, I just asked the guy to fetch them for me.
I was so disapointed the game didn't sell well enough, although I think if they had another shot it might do better, as it earned a lota good reviews and post lauch "hype". And there's a lot more 360's out there, now.
  • Triggerhappytel #24 4 years ago

Obviously GTAIV and Wii Fit were always going to be number 1 & 2 respectively, but I'll be very interested to see how their sales figures measure up over the coming months - particularly since Wii Fit is around £30 more expensive. I'm temping in an office of mostly women at the moment and they've not shut up about it all week.

"Nice to see Halo 3 bounce back in, if only on the back of big hardware sales from GTA IV. "

Halo 3 has been on charts most of the time since launch.
  • WinterSnowblind #26 4 years ago

    @CARL05

Viva Pinata has the blood, sex and gore. You can breed your Pinata's AND smash their cute little faces in with shovels, watching as they break into hundreds of little pieces bleeding candy everywhere, for other Pinata's to devour.
  • Lemming81 #27 4 years ago

Viva Pinata is probably back on form because of the (fairly) recent PC release.

This is why all console games should be ported to PC: Gets you back in the top 40.

There are alot of PC users out there...'death of PC gaming' my arse.
