UK charts: Fallout 3 is new clear leader

Lots of new entries. Full top 40 inside.

Fallout 3 has exploded into the UK charts, robbing the top spot from RPG rival Fable II.

Sales of the Bethesda game were no doubt boosted by a multiformat release (and perhaps one or two 10/10 review scores). A whopping 55 per cent of copies sold were for Xbox 360 - leaving just 28 per cent for PS3 and 17 per cent for PC.

This caused a dip in Fable II morale and a subsequent trip to number four, behind FIFA 09 at two and Wii Fit at three. PES 2009 is in fifth place.

Far Cry 2 is at six this week, followed in 007th by new entry Quantum of Solace, piggybacking the popularity of the new Bond James Bond film.

Rounding out the chart are LEGO Batman at eight, Mario Kart Wii at nine and Saints Row 2 at 10.

Other new entries include the PC release of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 at 15, MySims Kingdom at 25, More Touchmaster at 28 and High School Musical 3: Senior Year at 29.

This week we wave goodbye to chart short-stayers Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, MotoGP '08 and Spider-Man: Web of Shadows.

BioShock also dropped out of the running after spending just one week back in the limelight following its PS3 release. Mercenaries 2 has disappeared, too.

rightly so - fallout 3 is one of the best games ive played in a long time. Fable is good too, but there is bearly enough time in the day to get fallout in, let alone another big game like fable.

And in the upcoming weeks releases its not getting any easier! :p

    EDIT:

    Thought i was first :S

    "Wow, Fablol.."

i don't get it? And the punchline is?

Fallout 3 didn't immediately grab me, I have to admit, but after playing it for over 26 hours now and reaching level 11, it is starting to really grow on me. I'm still not too keen on the post-apocalypse setting as it makes everything looks drab, depressing and samey (once you've seen one ruined bridge and derelict building, you've seen 'em all!). Everyone is understandly miserable so it's a totally different atmosphere to Oblivion. The storyline is very sublte compared with Oblivion too, although it does seem to be getting more interesting at least now I've reached the GNR building. I am enjoying the exploring though and taking out enemies with VATS, it never gets old and is, IMO, the most entertaining thing about the game. Shame about the poor animation and excessive screen tearing though (360 version), nothing mars the illusion of a real world more for me than the latter and it is very ugly at times. Good job the game is otherwise proving addictive so I've learnt to overlook the few issues. A well-deserved number one slot then.

headbog (v.47) lol: when was the last time you saw a PS-exclusive in the top 10? oh, right, MGS..., last year or something, the one that was supposed to sell as much as Halo. Btw, LBP is already out in Japan, guess what it didn't set the country on fire...
  • Stormflood #5 3 years ago

Personally I think Fallout 3 is crap. And after killing a few Brute thingys last night using a glitch whereby I could kill them through a door, I've decided to trade it in.
  • Mr-Brett #6 3 years ago

    Keep it clean people.

I think theres a good chance that Fallout would knock almost anything off the top spot conisdering how anticipated it's been plus its on three formats not one.

Although Fable is now in 4th so it's been slightly more than pushed off but is stilll in a respectable place. Everyone should just be glad that theres plenty of good games in the top 10 for once, instead of petty fanboy arguements.

Valkyria Chronicles isn't out yet, is it? I mean, it is out today, or last friday or something, so it wouldn't be on that list anyway.

ANyway, Valkyria is a japanese style tactical RPG and thereby pretty much a niche craving here in the west. Noone really expects it to outsell Falbel II, which is a western RPG, of course. I still think it's really good that these titles make over here, I wish they would translate and release Afrika too. In my opinion, the biggest strenght of the PS3 (over time) will be that ist has both the big multiformat releases (like Fallout 3) and the quirky, weird stuff like Valkyria, Afrika and LBP, I guess.

No disresepect to Xbox 360, but it is a lot more Hollywood in it's selection... PS3 is at least a teeny bit more "world cinema". Nintendo is, of course, just plain Nintendo.

I have Fallout 3 sitting on my shelf, as I still haven't completed Fable 2 yet!

The great thing about being a student is that I can spend all my student money on these fantastic games.
The not so great thing about being a student is that now I don't have any time to play them. Oh well!

Fallout 3 is gaming heaven for me, just don't use the Railway Rifle alot, especially in the underground metro tunnels.
  • bodypopper #10 3 years ago

Even though an horrendous clipping error meant that last night I could wade through the ground in Springvale eventually falling through it, I must say I'm liking Fallout 3 a lot. However, the setting does have me thinking 'this would have been even better as a Terminator game'.
  • Dizzy #11 3 years ago

Very nice for Fallout. I did notice shitloads of people on my friends list playing this, seems like 360 players are also big RPG fans. I didn't expect Fallout to be so "mainstream". Gz to the team!

    @CapnCloudchaser

I think you're missing the point of being a student :p
  • toy_brain #13 3 years ago

    @Olemak
Valkyria came out the same day as Fallout. I picked up my copy on day one, and also have to shed a litte tear to see it nowhere on that list.

Granted it has its quirks and flaws, but its such a unique, charming and compelling game it really deserves to be at least in the top 20.
  • lennon #14 3 years ago

@Darren - Cant say I have noticed any major tearing at all. I hope its not going to leap out and slap me in the face now youve mentioned it ;)
  • WillyWanka #15 3 years ago

Glad to see FIFA is back on top of PES though, it IS definately the better game this year

    /still feels dirty :s
  • canIdoyabombsforya #16 3 years ago

Currently playing Fable II and enjoying it, will trade up to Fallout 3 in due course.

  • youhavenomail #17 3 years ago

Like many others, I haven't managed to get a copy of Wii Fit yet. And it doesn't look like I'll be doing so anytime soon while all those chumps keep paying for overpriced bundles.
  • Eraysor #18 3 years ago

I hate Bethesda, Fallout 3 has turned out to be just as social-life-destroying as Oblivion was.

    "Mercenaries 2 has disappeared, too."

    Thankfully. Still no Spore though...

As a rpg fan i'm in heaven at the moment. Fallout3, Fables2, the WOW and NWN2 expantion. The best thing of all is they are all excellent. \o/
  • ardamillo #21 3 years ago

You lot are really fission with that headline :)
  • menage #22 3 years ago

I'm really glad Fable 2 at least sold a bundle last week and continues to stay in the top this week. I was kinda worried that games like that (Colorful, adventurous, inventive, etc) didn't sell at all, looking at the terrible VP 2 sales.

Shame about VC indeed though. I guess the average PS2 JRPG fanatic doesn't own a PS3 yet.

Didn't notice any tearing in F3 though. Some framerate stuff and such yes, no tearing. Compared to the PS3 version it's miles ahead at least, what a travesty. Coming from someone who bought it for my PS3 because I didn't want my machine to break during my epic questing. Traded it in the moment I saw how fucking awful it looked though.

  • TheLittlestHobo #26 3 years ago

Good news, I really hope Fallout 3 sells well as it is GOTY imo. (so far, though I cant see anything upcoming to topple it, Mirrors Edge maybe??)
  • m0thr4 #27 3 years ago

I'm enjoying Fallout 3, but I'm somewhat disappointed by the size of the game world, compared to Oblivion. If you've read that it's supposed to be 50-80% the size of Oblivion, you'd better prepare yourself for a nasty shock... it's way under 50%.
  • uk_john #28 3 years ago

Problem with multi-format charts is they mean nothing. Please can we have charts for each machine back, like we used to? After all, is Wii Fit a bigger hit than the two titles above given it only came out on one machine? Certainly there's an argument for a 2 million selling game, on PC only say, being a bigger hit that another game that sells 400,001 on 5 formats making 2 million and 4 units sold? In a multi -format chart that 5 format tile would be No.1, but on each machine, only 400,001 of the millions of gamers with that machine bought it!

I think a game that is only on one format cannot compete with another game on multiple formats, whether it is a much better game or not!

Bring back the individual machine charts PLEASE!!!!!!
