UK charts: Wii Fit in No. 1 again shocker News

Wii PC PlayStation 2 PSP DS Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Robert Purchese

17 February, 2009

Wii Fit has held firm atop the UK all-formats chart this week, despite F.E.A.R. 2 putting the frighteners on and entering at two.

The Warner Bros. shooter did secure the top spots in the Xbox 360 and PS3 charts, incidentally, but can't budge Football Manager 2009 from the top of the PC list.

F.E.A.R. 2 sells much faster than the original, thanks to a multiformat launch. Half of the sales are for the Xbox 360 SKU, while the PS3 picks up 31 per cent and the PC claims 19 per cent.

Further down, there are new entries for Ben 10: Alien Force at 13 and The House of the Dead: Overkill at 15. The latter manages third in the Wii-specific chart, beaten by best-sellers Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii.

Elsewhere seven of the top 10 games are for Nintendo formats, and half are published by the platform holder.

This week the chart waves goodbye to Resistance 2, Fallout 3 and Gears of War 2.

Hopefully House of the Dead sells decently, wii needs more good games that aren't cutesy platformers.

Nice to see F.E.A.R 2 performing pretty well too.

Wii Fit shouldn't even be in the games chart IMO. Besides the fact that Wii Fit isn't even a game as such - it's the equivalent of a Jane Fonda workout video - the thing is basically a £70 piece of hardware with "free" fitness software thrown in.

Similarly, Wii Play should never have been included in the charts either as people were only buying it for the Wiimote not the game itself (which was dire anyway... I should know as I have it!).

@the_dudefather - F.E.A.R. 2 for the PC is also sold through Steam (at a reasonable £24.99 for a change) and I don't think those sales are included in this chart.

So therefore it could have sold ten copies or twenty hundred billion for all anyone knows, so steam numbers are useless in a sales discussion.

Really funny to see all the crap titles of selling.

NFS, LOTR, blah

I agree on the Wii Fit thing. You could include Windows as well if we're incuding apps.

I wonder why Steam don't release sales figures. Maybe they don't want to scare retail outlets with the numbers!

I disagree completely on the Wii Fit thing. People are paying £70 (equivalent of 2 games) a pop for it, and that deserves recognition. Shall we not count Guitar Hero, because that's "basically a £70 piece of hardware with 'free' QTE software thrown in"?

The fact that it's selling more when it costs twice as much is damn impressive, and people I know who've bought it have it because they think it's fun, not because they're trying to get fit with it.

Might it be unfair to suggest the PS3 version of F.E.A.R. 2 isn't selling quite as well because an awful lot of PS3 owners are waiting for Killzone 2 instead?

I have hope that StreetFighter 4 will knock WiiFit off top spot this week, but I will be interested to see how Killzone 2 fares compared to PS3 F.E.A.R. 2.

It is not the job of a sales chart to decide WHY someone bought something, only to list what they bought and in what numbers. Saying people didn't buy Wiis for Wii Play is an assumption, not a known fact (not saying its not true, just that we don't know either way AND that it doesn't matter).

I've played Wii Fit very briefly. Seems like a game to me.

2 definitions -

An amusement or pastime
A competitive activity involving skill, chance, or endurance on the part of two or more persons who play according to a set of rules, usually for their own amusement or for that of spectators.

The whole "not a real game" discussion is just weird anyway. Its not that fixed a term. People probably said it about video games when they were first invented.

@Razz - "Sour grapes"... what the h... why?!? I *have* Wii Fit. Sorry but I do not consider it a game at all. It's exercise software and, in my humble opinion, not really that much fun at all! :P

Can you play Wii Fit with other people and have a laugh like Dance Dance Revolution or Time Crisis... can you play it for hours and hours on end and get addicted to it... no, not really... therefore it is not really a proper game per se (as I define the word).

Yeah, i think the people that get in a humph about Nintendo kicking ass and taking names, are the ones that predicted 2+ years ago that the wii is a fad and will fail. And now that the opposite is true, all these people can do is bash the games and nintendo. Well grow up. Games are for everyone, and not just you. If you don't like Wii fit or Wii play then go on and sell them. No one is stopping you.

I'm sure it will when the sales of both versions are combined...not so sure about the "individual format" charts. I mean Fear 2 on the 360 only made number 7 on that this week.

Okay, I'll explain to you why Wii Fit is not a game. Games, as has been previously noted, are "A competitive activity involving skill, chance, or endurance on the part of two or more persons who play according to a set of rules, usually for their own amusement or for that of spectators."

Not that I totally agree with that definition, as when it comes to video games the computer can take the place of other people.

From Nintendo's OWN website:

Step onto the Wii Balance Board and into a fun way to get fit.

* Control on-screen action with your movements on the balance board as you work your way through a variety of challenges aimed at getting you off the couch and into the action. Check your Body Mass Index (BMI), see your Wii Fit Age and keep tabs on your daily progress towards a more fit for you.

* Get fit with more than 40 activities and exercises, including strength training, aerobics, yoga and balance games. Whether you're doing a yoga pose or snowboarding down a slalom course, there's an activity for everyone.

* Challenge your family and friends to get in shape! Create your own personal profile and set goals, test your balance, track your progress with daily workouts and unlock new exercises and activities."

It is not marketed as a game - it is not for amusement of the user or for spectators. It is being marketed as a fun way to get fit. If you have watched any late night television, the adverts are full of fitness systems that are (supposedly) fun to use. Are these games? I think not. This is CLEARLY being marketed as a fitness device, not as a game. So all this bollocks about why this is a game is way off the mark. Something can be fun (although I don't see how Wii Fit iis, I'll concede some do), and not be a game.

Yeah Wii Fit ofc should be in the chart just like a guy already mentioned that Quitar Hero shouldnt be in the charts either according to the way you ppl think. BUT.. Still I have to say my humble opinion. This thing with Wii Fit is fucking weird and messed up. Think of how many and what kind of ppl are actually gonna have their first attempt to be healthy just cause it came out on the wii and affordable lets say... or whatever the fuck the reason is. Did it have to be a freaking game ? seriously... Guess the Jap Goverment knows why they will put a limit to their online activities.

Anyhow.. Its nothing more than a personal thought so pls whoever sees it so different pls do not start bitching. SPECIALLY if you are from those that were lazy to go to a gym before wii fit :p

The way I see it is that Wii Fit itself isn't a game...it's hardware with a game to show you what it does. Software such as Family Ski, Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party, Shaun White Snowboarding and Wii Music are games which use the board as an input.

I'd compare this to Play TV for PS3....is this a game? It's something fun that you do with the console... Its hardware and comes with a disc??

Personally I don't see how it can be number 1 in charts when most retailers are out of stock??

I remember the time when the charts were full of normal games and poor little Nintendo kept on bringing out great games only for the gaming public to snub them; all because Nintendo consoles were for kids. We should all be applauding Nintendo for raking in £70 a shot for a dodgy set of bathroom scales that tell “An anorexic kid that she’s a fat c*nt.”

Hard to imagine the system seller Little Big Planet getting bested by 33 other titles. Next up. Killzone 2. An excellent game, that will likely do well, but won't sell PS3's in any kind of big way.
