UK charts: BioShock 2 unseats ME2

2K Games' first No. 1 since GTAIV.

2K Games' big-hitting sequel BioShock 2 has stamped to the top of the UK all-formats top 40.

This is the publisher's first number once since Grand Theft Auto IV in April 2008.

Last week's leader Mass Effect 2 dropped to eighth.

Just Dance held poise in second, FIFA 10 stretched to third and Modern Warfare 2 was nudged to fourth. Wii trio Wii Sports Resort, New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Wii Fit Plus followed.

Dante's Inferno was in ninth, and the top 10 was rounded off by Bayonetta, which leapt deftly from 36th into 10th.

This week's other newcomers - Star Ocean: The Last Hope (PS3) and Super Monkey Ball: Step & Roll (Wii) - entered their platform-specific charts at 11th and 19th respectively.

Bayonetta in top ten. Good news. I hope AVP will be selling well next week as the game is fantastic imo. They should have used a script like this in the AVP movie. This story would have worked great for the film. The ending in the Marine campaign was awesome. This game deserves good reviews. First scary game since Dead Space but this is much more frightening. The sound effects is perfect. Very good Alien design. Both Gigers original and Camerons (not improved) version is in it. I enjoyed the Alien campaign too even though its the weakest. The story is good here too and that helps a lot.

    ME2 down to 8th? That's a pretty big drop

Well, at least it's a buchj of good games for once. Yay for Bayonetta, probably because it's cheap now.

Glad it beat the crap Dante at least. Biggest money waste since Brutal Legend

Loving Bioshock 2 so it's well deserves the top slot. Good to see Bayonetta jump up again as well.

Is it wrong that I'm curious what this mysterious feeeg said? His post has gone.
  • Monkey_Puncher #11 2 years ago

Don't be curious, it was just nonsensical spam.

Bayonetta is £17.99 at most places already.

I'll snap up Darksiders once it hits that sort of price range, because I'm a cheap bastard.
  • the_exile #12 2 years ago

Please somebody remove muscleblade 's comment. This 5s also spam (from a rebellion shareholder)
  • The-Bodybuilder #13 2 years ago

Woah, what a drop for ME2.
MS should bundle it and keep the momentum going. Such a classic does not deserve to go out yet.
  • swissorc #14 2 years ago

I wonder if Bioshock will have a longer stay in the top ten than mass effect 2 I predict not so although not much coming out this week so should still be in the top ten
  • metalmike25 #15 2 years ago

I bought Mass Effect 2 on Saturday and i've been playing it non stop. It really is as good as everyone says. They've cut out all the rubbish stuff from the first game like the awful, complicated weapon management and the dull characters. After the disappointment of Bayonetta it's nice to play a game that absolutely blows you away. 10/10 definately justified, best game i've played since Uncharted 2.
  • menage #16 2 years ago

Well, I don't really know the numbers, so if ME2 sold 2 million in the first 2 weeks (just a hypothetical number) it doesn't really seem strange it would end after that. Seems like a game for the fans which would be all over it as soon as possible. Not a casual title.
  • muscleblade #17 2 years ago

    @menage

Exactly. Its a game most people buy on day 1.
  • Stomp224 #18 2 years ago

I have to say, im ashamed to have put Bioshock 2 at number one. I apologise for the below rant, but I'm angry and need to vent

While its gameplay tweaks are all for the better, the story is a gigantic, uninteresting and for the most part, unresolved mess. The voice acting from the main protagonists is awful. Bioshock le originals success was mostly (for me) down to the incredible voice acting. Every character (Audio log only characters included) was well performed and well written enough to suspend my disbelief and encourage me to find more logs to unravel Rapture and progress the story.

In BS2 I eventually found myself picking up diaries without listening to them, such convoluted, poorly acted claptrap that they were. There is only one that stands out as being of the quality of the original game and that is Fontaine becoming Atlas. If the Voiceover Director was the same one as the first game, he should be disgusted in himself for obviously falling asleep during the recording session.

Christ, in a complete reversal of my expectations, the MP is superior in atmosphere and feel to the SP.

I was cautiously anticipating this since its announcement, as I was of the 'BS doesn't need no sequel!' school of thought, but gave in at the promise of returning to Rapture with improved gameplay. And although the game mechanics have indeed improved greatly, somebody at 2K thought it wise to test the "room full of monkeys with a typewriter" theory. :(
  • menage #19 2 years ago

    @Stomp

Dunno, I'm enjoying it immensely, and I'm digging the whole story thing actually.

Gamplay wise it's certainly a different breed than BS1, 1 felt more survival horror at times, this is just a riot shooter, but with less tension I'm actually having more fun actually playing it. Only thing dissapointing is the graphics which haven't improved much at all, but they were decent to start with.

  • zisssou #20 2 years ago

See if all games were multi platform Mass Effect would have probably still been first/second
  • zisssou #21 2 years ago

    Also

    Bioshock 3 please.
  • el_pollo_diablo #22 2 years ago

Nice to see Peppa Pig hanging in there.
  • makeamazing #23 2 years ago

The only issue i had collecting the tape recordings were, was that they seem to use the same voice actor for many of the tapes, and the same voice actor for BS1... was expecting something alittle different. But i do like listening to them to get a better idea of the story.

Why does the copyright notification proclaim : "©2008 ELSPA (UK) Ltd."?
  • muscleblade #25 2 years ago

I havent played Bioschock 2 enough too really have a valid opinion but it was way to easy to stop playing it to play AVP instead.
I liked the multiplayer though. I will come back to both mp and singleplayer as soon as im done with AVP.
  • kongzi #26 2 years ago

didn't expect ME2 to drop so soon, not for Bioshock 2 at least. Also surprised to see GTAIV is still going.. I guess the episodes disc counts as GTAIV for this?
  • gjgjg #27 2 years ago

    8th?! surely a collector scam?
  • AphoticCosmos #28 2 years ago

ME2 = greatest game of all time!!!! OF ALL TIME!
Bioshock 2 = greatest rehash of all time!!!! OF ALL TIME!
  • malexous #29 2 years ago

Wii trio beats MW2 and FIFA10 individually.

    Go, Bioshock, go!

I'm a little sorry for Mass Effect, thought it would stay up there a while. ME2, combined with ME1 is the best experience I've had with a video game, ever. Bioshock 2 starts slow (slooooow) but picks up the pace and ends beautifully.
  • TRUTH #31 2 years ago

Mass Effect 2 (best action/rpg) well worth having, Bayonetta (the best action hack & slash game ever (esp harder skill levels) well worth having, Bioshock 2 (great if a bit to similar to the 1st) woth having but not so as much as the other 2.

  • TheBrow #32 2 years ago

"The most shocking entry in this weeks chart is the re-entry of Ferrari Challenge O.o

It's over a year old and has been cheap for quite a while now. Why the sudden surge? "

Presumably the fact that GT5 has suffered its umpteenth delay has lead to people looking elsewhere for their sim-racing fix in the meantime.
  • aaronali #33 2 years ago

In reference to the subtitle of this article - "2K Games' first No. 1 since GTAIV" - I foresee more Take Two games in #1 this year: Red Dead Redemption, Mafia 2, L.A. Noire, maybe even Spec Ops: The Line, Agent. Untitled Ken Levine Project!! Man, this company has an enviable production schedule.

    edit: Max Payne 3

When did 2K have anything to do with GTA IV? 2K Games and Rockstar are completely separate studios that publish through Take Two Interactive.
  • aaronali #35 2 years ago

    @ Javert
Yah, I saw that slip-up too and decided to assume he meant Take Two rather than 2K.
  • muscleblade #36 2 years ago

    @TRUTH

You said it. Could not agree more.
  • dingo75 #37 2 years ago

Maybe the idea of all those DLC did bite ME2 in the ass.
I for sure delayed purchase and will wait for the GOTY edition with all the DLC included in 1-2 years...
  • menage #38 2 years ago

Sigh, you get the DLC for free when you buy new so far, how could that bite them in the ass.

I'll be playing ME3 by then.

  • Eraysor #39 2 years ago

Yeah, why have an open galaxy when you can have an open world?
  • sarcasmoidosis #40 2 years ago

"I really liked ME2 - but why are people saying it is just so amazing?"

Because, for them, it was. I really don't know how to explain it in another way. Having connected with the character in the first and having imported it to the second, it's really a saga, like reading a really good book where you also get to shoot people in the head or stab them in the back.

I am fully aware of the issues other might have had with ME2 (planet scanning mini-game, the lite RPG system from the first has been removed almost completely, etc) but it still was the best gaming experience I've ever had because the game connected on a personal level.

As for it not having the open world of Fallout, I guess nobody really expected ME2 to have it.
