UK charts: Bad Company 2 dominates

Supreme Commander 2 visible.

EA's newcomer Battlefield: Bad Company 2 has topped the UK All-Formats chart.

Xbox 360 claimed most sales (53 per cent), followed by PS3 (31 per cent) and then PC (16 per cent). The latter number is likely to be higher in reality as digital sales are not counted.

The other new entries in the top 40 were Supreme Commander 2 in 23rd and the PC edition of Assassin's Creed II, which boosted the multiplatform game to 14th.

Ubisoft's Wii champion Just Dance was in second, Aliens vs. Predator in third, Heavy Rain in fourth and Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing in fifth.

Wii Fit Plus, Modern Warfare 2, Wii Sports Resort, FIFA 10 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii rounded out the top 10.

The Heavy Rain drop-off was expected as was Sonic and Sega-All Stars Racing having legs rather than blitzing the chart. Battlefield hitting the top wasn't really surprising either since EA went all out in promoting it as well. Standard chart really.

Disappointed for Supreme Commander 2 but that probably has its majority in Steam sales anyway.
  • Yargh #2 2 years ago

Why anyone decided to buy Assassin's Creed II on PC is beyond my powers of comprehension. Read up on a game before buying it people...
  • MrSpew #3 2 years ago

    Indeed, haven't found it yet.
  • anomagnus #4 2 years ago

the bf2 single player campaign actually managed to be superior to MW2, a lot more amusing and a lot more fun. What it lacked in the technical perfection of cover and enemies compared to MW2 (and there wasn't much in it) was more than compensated for with a fun cast, that had me laughing out load more than once.

The multiplayer though, it shits all over MW2. From a great height.
  • Quint2020 #5 2 years ago

It deserves the sales, the multiplayer is an absolute blast and the campaign maintains the heart and humour of the first game, it never feels like just another soulless war FPS.
  • Spooke #6 2 years ago

Enjoying the multiplayer heaps. Especially the levitating road cones ;)
  • bad09 #7 2 years ago

It's a real shame enough people still bought AC2 PC to push it back up the charts, mind you it's sinking fast on amazon uk. 55th on the bestsellers, non-existent on HMV and Zavvi bestsellers lists (obviously no Steam UK sales at all). The only online retailer I can see it's doing well is play, where it's 8th.

    @ Yargh
It's AC, some will put up with the treatment just to play it. Well if they could play it that is, how's the Ubi servers today? :)

@anogmagnus - +1 to your comment about BF: BC2's campaign being better than CoD: MW2's.

The banter between your squadmates really brings this game to life and the story is a lot more coherent than IW's game. It does help that you're not jumping between three different, otherwise faceless and completely lifeless, personalities though. I was surprised at how much I've been enjoying this game on the PC even the mutliplayer which normally doesn't interest me.

"The Heavy Rain drop-off" might be in part to it being completely sold out last week in all the high street shops?

Really? I saw plenty of copies in East London this weekend and my Local Asda had a few. You might want to go check now.

/Still cant find Miles Edgeworth. Bah. Foolish fools who foolishly don't stock games I want.
  • Darren #10 2 years ago

@Yargh - Yes, AC2's DRM is every bit as bad as we all feared and, yes, I bought the game. However, the game itself is beyond outstanding and utterly addictive and immersive so I don't regret buying it despite the fact that DRM is doing its utmost to ruin the experience, quitting to the desktop at random intervals and taking upwards of 35 minutes to just connect to UbiSoft's servers to just play the damn thing. Not good at all.

I can only hope... nay pray that the head bods at UbiSoft see how damaging this DRM is for offline single player games because having to wait ridiculously long periods of time to play it is not acceptable. What really galls though is that if your own internet connection breaks off then the game simply pauses but if UbiSoft's own servers crash or fail then the game dumps you unceremoniously back to the desktop with no error message or indication of why it happened.

I have nothing against DRM personally where it is non-intrusive and doesn't get in the way of me playing a game but clearly UbiSoft's DRM is inherently flawed because they cannot guarantee that your nor their connection to the server will work 100% all the time. That's what you'd expect of an online game where you rely on the internet connection but not an offline game. Even Steam allows you to play its games offline.

SupCom2 and BC2 are both excellent. I hope SC2 sells more.
  • crozon #12 2 years ago

Christ i bought AC2 and have no problems with it. In fact i really like the fact my save games are stored online. I can play on my pc during the weekend and play on my laptop while i work away from home during the week and always have access to my save games.
  • youhavenomail #13 2 years ago

It's perhaps just as well that no one can buy Heavy Rain at the moment. Maybe they'll have released a patch by the time it's feely available again so it can be played without crashing every two hours or so.
  • stevetuck #14 2 years ago

    GO GO JUST DANCE!!!
  • MinerWilly #15 2 years ago

Very happy for Battlefield , it deserves to stay up there for a long time . I wish Haggard and the lads would do a covert ops mission on all the Wii garbage in the chart like Just Dancez and Wii Sportz etc
  • geeza2020 #16 2 years ago

i think i'm gonna have to get this battlefield thingy. looks and sounds quite nifty.
  • ckyman2 #17 2 years ago

Bad Company 2 lag lag lag, no server found, server full, lag lag lag im fucked off, ea get it sorted or im trading it in
  • bad09 #18 2 years ago

    Question:

2 complete prats on EG ruined the plot of Heavy Rain with a MASSIVE spoiler (one idiot even started a thread with the spoiler as the title), so I now know "you know what". Is it still worth playing it already knowing?

I got Battlefield Bad Company 2 yesterday for my Birthday, they charged me another £5 for the limited edition at game!!! loving the game though, just pure amazing although a screenshot feature like the first one would of been ace, or am i missing something?
  • Darren #20 2 years ago

@crozon - I presume you didn't play AC2 yesterday afternoon then (UK time) because there was a problem with UbiSoft's servers that stopped people from playing the game and there's a 10-page thread about it on the UbiSoft AC2 forum. I didn't have any major problems playing the game on Friday night or Saturday by the way, only a game pause for two minutes when my connection dropped.
  • septimus #21 2 years ago

    A worthwhile No.1. Good game.
  • Bravestinsane #22 2 years ago

    If only if fucking worked.

Haven't been able to play a single game online without getting kicked due to server issues from punkbuster
  • dingo75 #23 2 years ago

To all that bought AC2: Haha!
  • swissorc #24 2 years ago

Heavy rain was always going to drop hard and fast anyway. With God of War 3 out in a week or so any final fantasy 13 very few adults are going to buy heavy rain instead for their PS3. I think we will see a resurge in sale for it during the summer drought mind. That's when I usually play catch up on spring launches.
  • Lee_Morris #25 2 years ago

I didn't see Heavy Rain in Leeds when I was shopping at the weekend so I'd expect to drop off heavily next week.

Does anyone know the platform split for MW2 from it's first couple of days.

PS wahoo for Uncharted 2 sneaking back into the top 20.
  • kinky_mong #26 2 years ago

Well I contributed to BC2's top position but I'm not happy with the fact that the servers had problems all weekend so it was rare that I could play the multiplayer, and my VIP code didn't work either.
  • sneetch #27 2 years ago

    @Yargh
Why anyone decided to buy Assassin's Creed II on PC is beyond my powers of comprehension. Read up on a game before buying it people...

Why would the average punter read up just in case there's some new and draconian DRM? No, they bought it on good faith and that's quite understandable. However, they'll know for the next Ubisoft game and those who have stung this time may be a whole lot more hesitant next time: Ubisoft have only just started to damage their reputation.

Anyway, loving BC2 so far, just need more time to be able to play it.
  • sneetch #28 2 years ago

    @Lee_Morris
Does anyone know the platform split for MW2 from it's first couple of days.

IIRC it was approximately Xbox 60%, PS3 35% and PC about 5% (that doesn't include the digital sales from stores like Direct2Drive or Steam, those would have swung it a bit).
  • metalangel #29 2 years ago

Yeah, Battlefield is great. Most exciting "unable to connect to server" screens since... Ooh... Battlefield 1943!
  • President_Weasel #30 2 years ago

Some people only game on PCs, yes even in these days of cheap X360s and reasonably-priced PS3s. These people would be faced with the choice of not buying AC2, buying a 360 specifically to play it, or putting up with the DRM on the PC version - or pirating the thing; apparently pirates were the only ones able to have uninterrupted play at the weekend.
Personally I chose option 1, but then I didn;t buy the first one either.

Seems odd not including Steam purchases in the UK-o-chart though; it must completely distort the sales figures since (anecdotally) more people are buying from Steam than from bricks and mortar these days.
  • M_of_the_sys #31 2 years ago

    @bad09

Yeah i saw that prat's spoiler too but the game was still great for me. I think I would've enjoyed it more having not known 'you know what' but it was interesting to play the story and see how everything was fitting together. The sort of parts where you could say 'Oh... I see what they're trying to do!'

As for the story, it's still great and works well even knowing the spoiler. There are still other good bits in the game that haven't been ruined too.
  • uglygamer #32 2 years ago

It will need something special to top Battlefield bad company 2 as my game of the year and its only March. Absolutely amazing, far superior to Modern warfare 2.

Nice to see Sega and sonic rise up the charts after a decent debut. Its the type of game that casuals and hardcore gamers could pick up throughout the year and help it stay in the top 40 for a long time
  • bad09 #33 2 years ago

    @ M_of_the_sys

Cheers for that, my Mrs is getting it next week for her PS3 so I'll jump on it when she's finished!
  • M_of_the_sys #34 2 years ago

    @bad09

Yeah I made the mistake of starting a game without the gf so had to make her play on her account as I didn't want to ruin the story for her. Meant we have to play it when the other* was out the room. Just finished it over the weekend though so she can jump on it now.

*Always had to find something else for her to do :p
  • bad09 #35 2 years ago

    @ M_of_the_sys

I'm cool as I haven't moved in yet so she will be on orders to play it ONLY when I'm not around :)
  • gillri #36 2 years ago

Good to see Bayonetta still there!!!!!!!!!!!
  • bad09 #37 2 years ago

God the AC2 story gets worse. It seems play.com are DELETING BUYERS REVIEWS in a bid to keep the bad news away from potential customers. (I saw one on there which got deleted). Terrible state of affairs.....
  • ronuds #38 2 years ago

Shirley if a game is sold out everywhere then it should be #1?
  • axman303 #39 2 years ago

Where the hell is Silent Hill: Shattered Memories? Just out on Wii, PS2 and PSP and not even in the Top 40?

I've got the Wii version and it's a very innovative, very ambient experience.
  • youhavenomail #40 2 years ago

I generally don't care about whether people give my posts thumbs up or down, but I'm confused as to why anyone would be against my notion that the crashes in Heavy Rain are spoiling it. Are fanboys that sensitive? I'm certainly that sensitive about my £40 game crashing at least once every session!
  • Vyggo #41 2 years ago

I am reluctant to admit it, but the Sega/Sonic kartgame is pretty awesome. If you can't play mario kart for some reason (don't own a nintendo device) this is a very solid alternative. Very nice to play with the kids.

the giantbomb quicklook made me see the light, had no interest in it before.
