UK charts: AVP is the new leader

Miles Edgeworth and Van Halen struggle.

SEGA has taken the UK All-Formats Chart top spot this week with Rebellion's reboot of Aliens vs. Predator.

The game has become the fastest-seller of the year. Xbox 360 accounted for 58 per cent of sales, with 32 per cent falling to PS3 and nine per cent on PC, although it's worth noting that digitally distributed copies are not counted.

Last week's leader, BioShock 2, fell to third.

Other newcomers fared much worse. Guitar Hero: Van Halen managed only 17th on the Xbox 360 chart and 27th on PS3. Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce managed 30th on the Xbox 360 chart but was nowhere to be seen on PS3.

Disappointingly, Ace Attorney: Miles Edgeworth only reached seventh on the DS chart. And PSP debutant SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo managed eighth on the PSP list.

The rest of the All-Formats top 10 was relatively unchanged: Just Dance (2), BioShock 2 (3), New Super Mario Bros Wii. (4), FIFA 10 (5), Modern Warfare 2 (6), Wii Sports Resort (7), Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (8), Wii Fit Plus (9) and Army of Two: The 40th Day (10).

SEGA's official but dreadful recreation of the Winter Olympic Games, Vancouver 2010, piggybacked the real-life sporting event's popularity and raced up to 11.

Miles Edgeworth only 7th? On the DS chart!? What the hell is wrong with you people?

    But lol@Van Halen
  • ChocNut #2 2 years ago

I'm glad AVP is doing well - The demo could have scared many people away but the actual game is excellent imo
  • muscleblade #3 2 years ago

Good sales of AVP means Aliens Colonial Marines will be made eventually. Come on SEGA and Gearbox makes it happen. I loved Borderlands but dont need a sequel. Go with Aliens. Make it great.
  • RobotRocker #4 2 years ago

Edgeworth supposedly has a very low print run. Most of the shops I checked didn't have any stock or were sold out so it would explain why it charted so low. Considering the Wright series has such a massive cult following, I'm well surprised.
  • Quint2020 #5 2 years ago

How on earth can MW2 still be selling? Surely everybody with a pulse now owns that game?

I've just had a look at Rebellion HQ on Google Earth.

The structure seems intact, and they still have power.
  • Dark_Stranger #9 2 years ago

I was so looking forward to AVP, then the review put me off, but now I might get it again. Why is life so complicated!!!
  • FortysixterUK #10 2 years ago

'cos reviews are so subjective and fickle...and Eurogamer reviews are usually overly harsh.
Don't be too hard on yourself, the friendly videogame shop will still sell you a copy of AVP if you ask nicely.
  • andywilkie35 #11 2 years ago

Shame about Miles Edgeworth - I got it on Tuesday (delivered early!), absolutely marvellous.
  • BOBBYLUPO #12 2 years ago

Well done Rebellion. Hopefully they'll go on their own bug hunt now. I'm mainly looking at you, MP.
  • sesskie #13 2 years ago

As per usual mediocrity is never a deterrant for healthy sales. Im giving AvP a pass. Ive played this game already, and it was done much better 10 years ago.
  • MontyBrewster #14 2 years ago

"'although it's worth noting that digitally distributed copies are not counted"

That's ok, it's not like steam's popular or anything.
  • Gearskin #15 2 years ago

Steam sales will be through the roof. It's the no.1 seller on the service, right? 25 million users? Booya.
  • hiddenranbir #16 2 years ago

Do you think STEAM count the registration of AvP as a sale? Cause the game is locked in to it :p
  • Deckard1 #17 2 years ago

think I'm gonna crack and buy AVP today.... I just can't say no to anything with a predator in it (I've got all of michael jacksons CDs)
  • mashk #18 2 years ago

I thought Eurogamer were overly harsh in their assessment. As a fan of Aliens and Predator I enjoyed the game.
  • KDR_11k #19 2 years ago

Should we cheer or cry that a terrible game like AvP is keeping Just Dance away from #1?
  • Rizo #20 2 years ago

I guess holding back reviews worked?
  • drumbaby #21 2 years ago

Enjoying AvsP immensely, so I'm glad to see it riding high. Hopefully this will inspire lots of after-care, like DLC and patches etc.
  • Mkwone #22 2 years ago

Shame to see MAG falling like a stone in the charts. Hopefully there's still enough players to go up against by the time i get it.
  • Widge #23 2 years ago

I reckon MAG will keep a hardcore following like Warhawk... so no probs with community there.
  • Retro_ #24 2 years ago

The broken AvP demo must have damaged the PS3 sales, Shame as MP is great in the retail version.
  • Peew971 #25 2 years ago

    Forza 3 sure has legs.
  • Doctor_What #26 2 years ago

I've not got my copy of AVP yet, but this comments thread is definitely making me look forward to it.

@ KDR_11k: your opinion seems to be in the minority, but the game seems to be a marmite (love or hate it) product. I hope I'm in the 'love it' camp. I guess you're on the other side!
  • Jonny5Alive7 #27 2 years ago

Theres been very little advertising for Van Halen, so I'm not surprised it isn't selling. Has there been an EG review yet? Theres probably a reason for that.
  • muscleblade #28 2 years ago

    @Doctor_What

I got it early from a friend in a game store. There wasnt any reviews out except the IGN UK one 8,5% when i started playing it and i loved the game. Dont let some bad reviews stop you from buying this great package. Its much better than the AVP movies so i think Rebellion did a great job of staying true to both Alien and Predator franchises. The atmosphere is better than in Bioshock imo. Dark and gritty.

  • Caimbeul #29 2 years ago

Surprised its selling so well despit it having a relatively poor review and crap demo...maybe im not that surprised, probably 70% of games bought these days are by idiots who wouldnt know a good game if it hit them in the face and think that ...oh i'm not even going to bother. In a cynicle mood - No offence intended etc.

Go AvP, great sales means Colonial Marines!

I know all games are marmite but I really feel sorry for Rebellion because I think it's brilliant and I just do not understand the hate.
  • muscleblade #31 2 years ago

    @Caimbeul

The demo was form an early build. The game has gotten both good and bad reviews. How do you know its bad. Are you guessing? I have the game and i think its better than Bioshock 2. You cant trust reviews all the time. You my friend are an idiot, not the people that buy this game.
  • Haloboy #32 2 years ago

This news just made my day. Rebellion really got kicked down a fair bit this week by some overly critical reviews so this news should see them right.

*Goes back to playing the awesome survivor mode*

Oh, you want some of this? F*** you!
  • FooAtari #33 2 years ago

Xbox 360 accounted for 58 per cent of sales, with 32 per cent falling to PS3 and nine per cent on PC

Thats pretty useless with out some sales figures... Would be interesting to know how many sales that 9% accounts for.

And when is digital distribution going to start getting counted??? Lets say they did another 10%, that could be be some pretty healthy numbers.

Until DD starts getting counted in sales charts it's pretty hard to know how the PC is doing as a games platform at the moment.
  • Haloboy #34 2 years ago

AVP is number 1 on Steam.
  • ducksmuggler #35 2 years ago

I'll give you my copy of AVP..... it's utter shite
  • Jack1258 #36 2 years ago

Good to see Bayonetta is still selling! Hopefully it will encourage publishers there is a market for quirky japanese games
  • Haloboy #37 2 years ago

Go on then duck, someone else will thoroughly enjoy it if you don't.
  • Lee_Morris #38 2 years ago

AvP is the fastest selling game of the year!?! Mass effect or Bioshock didn't sell more on their first weekend! Am I reading the article wrong?
  • sarcasmoidosis #39 2 years ago

How the hell does Avatar keep selling?...
  • Haloboy #40 2 years ago

Avatar seems to be a true gamers game. Word of mouth has kept it selling strong and those who love it really do love it to death. Bit like AVP then!

Let's see some more love for Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce! A great little game, that. All Monster Hunter-y now. But set in China. Fighting hundreds of people. While glowing bright colours and having giant hair.
  • gjgjg #42 2 years ago

go AvP, i'm enjoying it alot more than i expected based on reviews
  • EmiliasHorse #43 2 years ago

Finally gave in and bought Bayonetta. Love it.

Was fearing a controller smashing Ninja Gaiden style swearfest, delighted to find an elegant game that does all the swearing in the cut scenes so you don't have to.
  • sublitterat #44 2 years ago

Ace Attorney games are always slow, steady sellers. First week sales don't really mean much to them, but they sell out eventually.
  • Dark_Stranger #45 2 years ago

@ ducksmuggler - Do you want my address then?
  • Jackface #46 2 years ago

How on earth can MW2 still be selling? Surely everybody with a pulse now owns that game?

I don't. And I'm very much alive. Well, last time I looked.
  • Chazmeister #47 2 years ago

    @ sesskie
"As per usual mediocrity is never a deterrant for healthy sales. Im giving AvP a pass."

Yep, I couldn't agree more. I played a friends copy for a few hours on the PC the other day and have to say I was distinctly underwhelmed. In all fairness for most people this was only ever going to be a stop gap for Colonial Marines anyway.
  • Haloboy #48 2 years ago

At least AVP didn't require extortionately high prices just to make it's presence in the chart known. You could pick it up for as little as £15 on some sites. Uh huh.
  • carrotcake #49 2 years ago

Power of advertising. I seen this on the tele
  • Haloboy #50 2 years ago

Power of a severely under-appreciated game followed by positive word of mouth. I seen this on the horizon.

    Rebellion now wants a sequel:

Buy Miles Edgeworth AA now folks! And yes, there is allegedly a reduced print run and the series always has been a bit of a slow burner. At least the game is being released in the UK; there's pretty much no copies in Benelux for example because the distributors there claim everyone will just play it on an R4 or similar. While I don't believe piracy affects sales to the degree that publishers claim, it can certainly harm the actual release of games in certain regions so it appears...
  • TRUTH #52 2 years ago

Mass Effect 2, Bayonetta the two best games of 2010!...AvP the worse game of 2010!
  • makeamazing #53 2 years ago

No way is AVP the worst game of 2010, there have been some rubbish games already... AvP isnt and wont be the best game of 2010, its very middle of the road, but its got Aliens and Predators in it... if you dont like that, then there is no helping you ;)
  • FutileResistor #54 2 years ago

    @Truth

That's a little unfair, I'm pretty sure it's nowhere near the worst game of 2010. Have you played the game online? A lot of folks seem to be enjoying multiplayer.

AVP is being judged over-harshly by many of us because the original and the sequel were awesome. This always had a huge chance of disappointing against those kind of expectations.

I'm disappointed that ME2 has dropped down the charts so quickly too and I really hope it continues to sell over time. However, iit is no surprise that AVP would sell. This is Alien/Aliens after all. Licences have a much broader audience than the core gamers who would be interested in ME2 or an obscure new IP like Bayonetta.

The fact is that gamers like us who read reviews, look at metacritic and download demos are in the minority. Yes, I'm saying even amongst people who play games quite a lot, we are a minority. How else can you explain the frequent disconnect between review scores and sales?

Who, outside of people who read reviews have heard of ME2 or Bayonetta? An average gamer/person walking into a shop would barely glance at ME2 or Bayonetta, but Aliens vs Predators sounds awesome and any other kind of licence will at least have some mind-space which is why mediocre licences continue to sell. Unfortunately there are more of these average gamers/mums/dads making purchasing decisions than there are of us. Great games will not always be rewarded with huge sales. This isn't a problem unique to games though, name almost product in any market and the same problem exists.

The best you can do is to gently nudge your less well informed friends towards games which deserve their support.

I'm completely confused. Bad reciews, mixed opinions on all forums, and high sales ( a figure as useful for identifying good games as the budgie population in Australia is). I love the Aliens and Predator movies, enjoy the AvP books, and was an enormous fan of the first few games. And I've both agreed and disagreed with Eurogamer's reviews in the past too (DA:o being one of my favourite games on the Xbox so far, for example)!

So I'll just leave it to a poll really (yes, I'm that frivolous with my money). Give my post a negative rating if you hate the game, and a positive one if you don't. You'll either cost or save me £40-odd, so this us definately the most important vote of your life!
  • TRUTH #56 2 years ago

All those who bought AvP need to know what quality games are really like - forget AvP (it is fairly average) and go and get Mass Effect 2 or Bayonetta (or both). See the difference in quality.
  • Quixz #57 2 years ago

Nice to see Forza 3 is doing well.
  • KayTannee #58 2 years ago

Strange they don't count digital downloads. I can imagine the PC version taking up alot more space if did. I for one bought my version through Steam. ... Although, I'm pretty sure Steam doesn't release its sales figures, so that might prove a problem.

Still annoyed about the lieing bastards though. Dedicated servers on launch my arse. Shame I'm such an Alien fan otherwise would feel really ripped off. Sick of companies out right lieing these days. (*Stares at Codemasters - yes Operation Flashpoint 2, I'm looking at you)
  • makeamazing #59 2 years ago

@TRUTH I am not doubting that ME2 or Bayonetta are good games, firstly I havent completed ME1, and Bayonetta isnt my cup of tea, I... oh wait... you know what... I am not the same as you, and have differing tastes... omg... :D
  • Doctor_What #60 2 years ago

@ makeamazing : I multiple clicked your '+' symbol for that one, shame it doesn't add more than one ;D
