UK charts: Assassin's Creed II denied

Modern Warfare 2 still reigns supreme.

Neither Assassin's Creed II nor New Super Mario Bros. Wii have managed to displace Modern Warfare 2 at the top of the UK All-Formats chart, despite Activision's champion selling 86 per cent fewer copies during its second week on sale.

Ubisoft's sequel finished second but recorded a 14 per cent better opening weekend than its predecessor.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is third, followed by Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit Plus, FIFA 10, and this week's final debutant, Left 4 Dead 2.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, Forza Motorsport 3 and LEGO Batman round out the top 10.

Other new entries this week are F1 2009 (11), LEGO Indiana Jones 2 (16), The Sims 3: World Adventures (36) and LittleBigPlanet on PSP (38).

    LBP gets no love :(

Still I bought it and from PSN so that has to count for something!
  • Vroom #3 2 years ago

Unfortunately lbp was never gonna get much love. :(

MW2 will probably be there till Christmas. But if AC had a better opening than the last one that wasn't bad either.

See, games do sell around MW2.

Shame about LBP, then again, everyone I know has a modded PSP, so they won't buy shit anyway.
  • asphaltcowboy #6 2 years ago

Going to get AC2 for Christmas. All about MW2 and L4D2 before then!
  • chukcyQ #7 2 years ago

New Super Mario Bros. that's actually totally old and boring.
  • ps3owner #8 2 years ago

    so MW2 sold 224k copies?
  • kangarootoo #9 2 years ago

    "so MW2 sold 224k copies?"

    ?

It sold something like 1.7m in the last week or so. Where did you get 224k from?
  • systems #10 2 years ago

@kangarootoo The article says 86% fewer sold than week before.

I'm sure Reggie's choking on his "NSMB will outsell MW2" nonsense by now...
  • Widge #14 2 years ago

Hmmm, LBP PS3? I would say they're both totally different games!
  • BiscuitBase #15 2 years ago

    >> "I'm sure Reggie's choking on his "NSMB will outsell MW2" nonsense by now..."

You never know, it might do over the long term. Nintendo will still be advertising NSMB for a couple of years whereas the "core" gamers would have moved on to the next big thing.
  • kangarootoo #16 2 years ago

"The article says 86% fewer sold than week before" and all the other responses.

Ahhh, so we are talking about one week of sales.

    Doh!
  • Peew971 #17 2 years ago

I guess those freaking Ant & Deck adverts are working afterall.
  • dadrester #18 2 years ago

I returned AC1 after about 3 hours of playing because it thought it was gash. I'm really enjoying the second one.
  • penhalion #19 2 years ago

I'm willing to bet good money that a lot of developers are kicking themselves for not releasing their games when they should have i.e.around MW2. For all it's mega hype it's still only the faithful and their mates that bought and are playing it. The other 25 million 360 and 20 million PS3 people are all spending their money elsewhere because there is nothing for them to buy!
  • Tomo #20 2 years ago

7th for L4D2! Sheesh, thought it would chart higher than that, although it's only really beaten by uber new releases or evergreen titles. Does that include Steam sales?
  • MaFlippinHeadHurts #21 2 years ago

I'm in the minority who actually enjoyed the first AC, however the second is way better - class game
  • kangarootoo #22 2 years ago

"For all it's mega hype it's still only the faithful and their mates that bought and are playing it"

I'm not sure what you mean by "the faithful and their mates". You say that as if its a handful of people. Over 8 million sales in such a short time is a lot by any measure. You can dress it up any way you want, but the "mega-hype" as you put it hasn't failed at all (except on me and you perhaps - I didn't buy MW2 either).

8 million sales means nearly 18% of the 360 and PS3 userbase (your numbers) has spent their game buying money for this month/week/Xmas. That is a huge chunk of people to remove from the pile of potential customers before you then start competing with all the other games out there for the remaining money.

I bought AC2 on Friday after work and played it until about 3am. I was mostly bored of MW2 after a day or so as I felt like I had played it before, but AC2 has me gripped. I'm about 20 hours in and so far don't feel like I'm repeating anything or going through the motions just to unlock story missions. It feels very organic and compelling.

Of course, my mam immediately moaned at me that she was going to buy it for me for xmas and now she doesn't know what to get me. Meh.
  • menage #24 2 years ago

    @kangooroo

Well, the general feeling they apparntly have is we buy one or 2 games a year or something. It's like when people buy MW2 they won't touch anything else for 4 months or so. Sure there are people who do that, but they won't buy the other games either way.

And I still don't freaking get why games like Bayonetta would be afraid of it as well, totally different game and audience.
  • penhalion #25 2 years ago

    @kangarootoo

I mean the FPS crowd. Your 18% figure leaves 82% of people out in the cold so yea the MW2 crowd is actually just a small minority!
  • denis09 #26 2 years ago

These charts would be a lot more interesting if they had Sales To Date numbers.
  • TruWari3r #27 2 years ago

    @ tomo,

No, steam sales figures are not taken into account. I got it for the 360 though, really enjoying playing versus but somehow it's feels like 90% of the players are from the states.
  • Eraysor #28 2 years ago

LittleBigFail again, hopefully it'll pick up before Christmas :S

Maybe I'll go buy it myself :)
  • bluem4gic #29 2 years ago

assassins creed II deserves to be number 1 it a shame that most of it sales will be lost to CODMW2
  • jaxon58 #30 2 years ago

    FOUR!!

    @Kangarootoo

"selling 86 per cent fewer copies during its second week on sale."

I thought i had sold 1.6 million last week. that's where I got my number from, but if it was 1.7 million then it's more : 238k

doesn't gove the numbers, that's all.
  • makeamazing #32 2 years ago

Enjoying AC2 so far... the start wasnt as bad as the Review pointed out (though they were right it was a bit clunky)... but exccept the odd issues dropping down from a building and jumping... going good. Enjoying it way more than MW2... traded that in with no 2nd thoughts. I really hope MW2 doesnt win GOTY... really doesnt deserve it (though the sales are amazing).

Whose still buying wii fit?? I'm fairly sure wii fit plus contains the whole of wii fit on the disk. People are idiots
  • TRUTH #34 2 years ago

AC II is probably one of the best games this year!...So much better then the 1st game. Graphics are amazing and open to all areas, not just backgrounds. Animation, fighting, platforming, story, fighting, story all AAA stuff - and it's bloody huge game. MW2 may be a different game, but it's a mainly liner shooter - that's all!

Nice to see Pure to get back in the charts - this was a highly enjoyable game with great graphics and customization, though didn't get the recognition it deserved . These guys are also making the amazing looking Split/Second.

"I'm sure Reggie's choking on his "NSMB will outsell MW2" nonsense by now... "

He said only on 1 platform - not all platforms combined.

"I'm sure Reggie's choking on his "NSMB will outsell MW2" nonsense by now..."

You know he was talking about LONG TERM SALES, on ONE PLATFORM, right?
MW2 will practically stop selling after a few weeks, as every other hardcore game does. On the 360, it was 4 million first week, 1 million second week, it will be a few hundred thousand third week, etc. It might end up with 6 million.

NSMB Wii can reasonably sell 1 million EVERY WEEK until the end of the year, with long term sales like every other Wii game's.
By the end of the year, it can outsell the 360 version.
By the end of next year, it can outsell it on all platforms.
In two years, it might outsell it on all platforms.. TIMES TWO!

The problem that MW2 poses to other games is mainly of a PR nature.
