UK charts: FIFA 10 beats Uncharted 2

Brutal Legend appears. Full Top 40 inside.

PS3 blockbuster Uncharted 2: Among Thieves swung into the UK all-formats chart at number two this week, denied top-billing by an unmovable FIFA 10.

Brutal Legend ended up third strongest of the newcomers, finishing at seven - two places lower than Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympics.

The Game of the Year edition of Fallout 3, the last of the high-finishing entrants, rounded the chart out at 10.

Further down, Super Smash Bros. Brawl crashed back in at 12, complimenting the outrageous staying-power of Nintendo's first-party games Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit.

Meanwhile, Guitar Hero 5 hit a flat note and slipped outside the top 10 down to 14.

A little dissapointing that BL is on 7 and not in the top 3 imo.
  • youhavenomail #2 2 years ago

Perhaps Uncharted 2 is paying the price there for Sony's hastiness in lowering all their PS3 Christmas releases last year to £20. I know that's why I haven't picked it up yet.

Do you think it would be possible to get actual figures by applying for the numbers through the freedom of information act?
  • Raiftel #4 2 years ago

Brutal Legend was kind of doomed to failure. Niche as all hell and selling itself on how METAL it was when really the market for it’s particular brand of metal was shrinking. For every metalhead that creamed themselves over Testament being on the soundtrack there were five gamers who looked at the tracklist and decided to not bother. It doesn’t help that beyond the awesome world design and humour the game was a bit naff.

Impressed to see Uncharted at the number 2 spot. Good going for a single format game whose prequel was something of a slow burn sales wise.

Especially as it only came out last Friday, so its placing has to be based on pre-orders alone.
  • zisssou #6 2 years ago

    @Raiftel

The game was a bit naff? Personally I disagree...Once you truely get into it I've found it really rewarding and most of all fun.

Brutal Legend grows on you. When you start to understand how the stage battles work its very satisfying.
    This week its Borderlands.

edit: zisssou beat me to it

There are a load of issues with the actual game. The rudimentary combat, the fact that the gameworld is seemingly designed for travel only by car, the RTS elements which are just a massive clusterf**k even when you follow Tim Schaffers advice, and its length really turned me off despite how much I enjoyed the imagination of the world and the humour (the bouncer shouting 'I’m Helping' during one of the cutscenes nearly had me choking). Psychonauts had the same problem where the actual platforming was kind of floaty and weird but it was saved by the pure brilliance of the writing and design.

My entire friends list seems to be constantly playing Uncharted 2 rather than FIFA. Which means I don't have to rethink my friends list.
  • menage #10 2 years ago

I think BL did alright actually, there's a lot of competition. I wouldn't have expeccted a top 10 at all.

FIFA not being beaten is kinda obvious, it's released on 20 different systems or so.

  • muscleblade #11 2 years ago

    @Raiftel

None of the "issues" you mentioned bothered me. Playing on the highest difficulty (what else) a midbattle checkpoint on the bigger stage battles would be nice. The last part of the last battle is a bitch on Brutal difficulty. The first part is easy so playing that over and over only to loose at the last part is a little irritating. I guess i need some upgrades and gitarsolos before my next attempt.
  • OllyJ #12 2 years ago

    @ Raiftel

It's far from a failure, number 7 is respectable, especially with all the big releases about.

I've played it a lot over the weekend and the metalness of it all is not as cheesy as it could have been, not sure what you mean by it's "brand of metal" shrinking? Since when has metal been popular culture? and the soundtrack covers most genres of metal comfortably, I couldn't give a shite if someone thinks Testament are rubbish, this game isn't for them as they won't give new things a chance, people that do give it a chance will be playing something unique and will certainly hear the odd classic tune that they will enjoy.

  • Zomoniac #13 2 years ago

you wont play nothing like this 0n 360.

In which case surely you will play something like this on 360...
  • muscleblade #14 2 years ago

And the lenght is more than enough for me. With all sidequests and achievements we are talking 15+ hours just for the singleplayer game. The multiplayer wont be a big hit but a few hours of multiplay after beating the main game will put it up to 20 hours.
  • Raiftel #15 2 years ago

    Muscleblade

Horses for courses mate, I just got tired of Eddie clipping into the floor or getting stuck on scenery whilst he was walking around and it would have been nice to have had some finesse in the combat. As it is the game reminds me of a Metal Dynasty Warriors.

    OllyJ

Brutal Legend is completely opposed to a lot of people who would class themselves as metal fans. It’s got this really sneery attitude about modern metal fans* which means that essentially it’s target demographic are classic metal fans who are either the original fans, ironic fans, or people who are a bit out of date. Metal isn’t mainstream anyways, but the attitude of Brutal Legend is niche even within Metal.

I said this to a friend when the tracklist was revealed but it seemed that Brutal Legend set out to sabotage itself by making itself seem more and more insular as it went on.

I will say this though, I was amused by the fact that Brutal Legend is now the second game I’ve played this year which had Judas Priests Painkiller as it’s big finale. Never liked that band, but Rock Band 2 and BL made me really start to dig them.

*Which is great because frankly modern metal fans deserve all the abuse they get

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves IS the greatest game ever should be christmas no.1 ,simply best game ever made.
its up ther with call of duty4 .....

    So an average game then?
  • Darren #17 2 years ago

I would dearly have loved to have seen Uncharted 2 take the top spot, at least for a week, as it's simply the best game I've played in the last two years. It's no surprise to see a multiformat game outsell it though, especially FIFA. It'll probably end up being there at Christmas as well.
  • mcmonkeyplc #18 2 years ago

Will Forza topple the mighty Fifa? I think not.

  • bodypopper #19 2 years ago

I have no interest in heavy metal whatsoever but I still want to buy Brutal Legend down the line as it looks like a lot of fun regardless based on the demo. By the same token I enjoyed the documentary Anvil even though the soundtrack was dire.

It's just unfortunate that BL launched against the best third person action game of the year/maybe decade which no doubt cost it a few thousand PS3 sales.
/pencils BL in as January sales purchase.
  • Raiftel #20 2 years ago

Whilst I know this sort of thing is important to Darren I think going on about Uncharted’s graphics kind looks past the fact that it’s a tightly designed, exceptionally well made and utterly enthralling adventure game. Even without those graphics the game is amazingly good fun and it’s definitely in my top five games of this generation.

Individual formats: Uncharted takes the crown.

Not that it matters a great deal either way, but I do think it's these charts that are of greater interest.
  • Raiftel #22 2 years ago

The problem is that the graphics are the only thing that people seem to go on about and by doing so they miss the fact that form a design perspective Uncharted is pretty gosh darned exemplary. It’s what separates it from other pretty, but vacant, games like Far Cry 2* and Heavenly Sword.

*Although Far Cry 2 is more of a curates egg than an outright failure imo
  • penhalion #23 2 years ago

Uncharted may or may not reach no.1 but, it is single platform so doesn't benefit from the combined sales that a lot of multi-platform games get. It's certainly selling well enough in the states and here in europe that I'm not too concerned with it being at no.2.

If anyone is suprised by Fifa selling stupidly well in a country of football fanatics, then I'm sure there are a lot of psychiatrists available to you on the NHS!

Edit: Glad to see that the Halo mod is falling down the charts as it deserves to. Dispite the fanboys praising it. Anyone who actually played it knows that it was a waste of time.

Nothing can beat Fifa even in its third week, not that Uncharted had any chance...lol

Also when Fifa debuted ratio between platforms was 94% "HD" consoles,6% others platforms.
One million in three weeks-that's pretty impressive, amazing in fact

  • PoundHound #25 2 years ago

Raiftel #4 - People chose not to buy the game because of the tracklist!? I find that staggering. I could understand if it was a Guitar Hero type game, but not the free roaming action/rts thing that it is.

I didn't see the tracklisting before I bought the game, but I must say I'm very impressed by the tracks. Not because I like them particularly, but because they are genuine "Heavy Metal" tracks whom most rockers would either never have heard of or won't like. That's a brave move, but it's true to the spirit of the game. They could have really sold out by putting on a load of commercial rock instead. I'm glad they didn't.

Mem #14 - I did exactly that - Bought a PS3 for Uncharted 2. I think the game is very, very good. It's hard to dispute the extremely high scores it has garnered, but, truth be told, it isn't actually worth spending £280 pound for (or in my case £400+ with the other games I picked up). Having partially played Killzone 2 and LBP, I think it's safe to say that U2:AT is easily my favourite PS3 game so far and one of the games of the year.

Uncharted was only on sale 1 day when these charts were compiled, compare that to Fifa being on sale for an entire week. I think we'll be seeing Uncharted on top of the all format charts next week. A hugely impressive number 2 position considering it was only on sale for 1 day.

The article is a little unfair. If you look at the format charts, uncharted was the best selling game.....

@Raiftel - "Whilst I know this sort of thing is important to Darren I think going on about Uncharted’s graphics kind looks past the fact that it’s a tightly designed, exceptionally well made and utterly enthralling adventure game."

Well that's exactly the reason I've mentioned it and I haven't said anything about its graphics here. I've said very little about the game's graphics even in the forum thread because they were a given even before the game was released. I'm not sure why you singled me out there. Surely you're not implying that I only like games if they have good graphics?!? Games with good, technically sound graphics are only worth praising if they have the gameplay to match; that's always been my view.
  • FirewalkR #31 2 years ago

@DavoTheDiv I was gonna point that out even without seeing the charts you linked to. I wouldn't be surprised if FIFA in just one platform beat Uncharted 2, since it always sells a lot, but it's fully expected when you aggregate all the platforms.
  • Diomedes #32 2 years ago

Man ,you should have put the individual formats charts ......there Uncharted is number 1 clearly.Who cares if Fifa 10 on all plattforms (DS ,PSP ,PC,Wii ,PS2 ,360 ,PS3) outmatched Uncharted 2....

Thing is Uncharted 2 was the best selling SKU in the UK for the week.
  • Darren #33 2 years ago

I've technically bought two copies of Uncharted 2: my original pre-ordered copy and the one I got with the 250 GB HDD PS3 Slim bundle that I bought on Saturday morning when my launch PS3 died again taking Uncharted 2 with it (I can't eject it).

I like to think I'm doing my bit to ensure the game is a bit success. After all I want to see another sequel. :)
  • muscleblade #34 2 years ago

"Combine this with a fairly lackluster online and terrible friends/trophys implementation you really have no need to buy a ps3 over the cheaper and multi platform bettering xbox360. "

    Exactly.

I actually prefferred the (360 version) Batman AA over Uncharted 2 anyway. Believe it or not.

I would rather give Uncharted 2 a miss than Halo reach tbh. I havent finished U2 though as i rather spend time with the games i own.

For Uncharted2 to beat out Brutal Legend and Mario/Sonic, I think that's pretty bloody impressive.

I'm sure it'll drop down next week - but hey.....
  • stevethemeat #36 2 years ago

Picked up Uncharted 2 yesterday (traded in ODST for £24 in Blockbusters), loving it so far, plays really smoothly.
  • GamerG #37 2 years ago

impressive of Fifa outselling UC2, so long after release, I guess it must be doing well because of word of mouth
  • Burkey123 #38 2 years ago

I've decided to get Uncharted at Christmas due to no time(work, college, etc ) but sweet jesus, am I tempted! I've heard nothing but praise, especially in the forum thread. Must resist for now.
And good to see Brawl back in the charts. Wonder why that is?
  • Steroyd #39 2 years ago

Perhaps Uncharted 2 is paying the price there for Sony's hastiness in lowering all their PS3 Christmas releases last year to £20. I know that's why I haven't picked it up yet.

That wasn't Sony, that was a Christmas during a recession, it was hard not to find any release at that price.

I doubt we'd have that much joy, this year though. :(
  • des #40 2 years ago

Isn't PES releasing this Friday?Expect it to dominate charts next week,it should easily beat Fifa 4th week.

As for one,two day debut tracking, every game gets the same treatment and for 99.9% of the games first few days are huge, remaining 0.1% is reserved for casual games.

    Take Fifa 2010 for example
The ratio between debut sales and this week sales is about 6...
In fact it has sold more in first two days than in last 14,almost twice as much

For non believers, take chart-track last two pr releases and use some basic math...

I really enjoyed the Brutal Legend PS3 demo - thought it was fun and had a sense of humor which was right up my alley :) . Unfortunately I've already shelled out money for Uncharted 2, Fallout 3 GOTY (PS3), Ratchet & Clank AICT and MW2 (PS3), which means I'm a bit short on cash (vis-a-vis games), and probably won't be able to buy it right now. I'm hoping that by the time I've finished the above, it will have gone down a bit in price, enough for me to afford it (without drawing ire from the missus :) ).
