UK 360 surges, PSP falls

Due to hardware changes.

Important-looking numbers from Chart-Track show sales for the 360 in the UK are up 260 per cent week-on-week - while the PSP has suffered its worst week since launch.

As reported by MCV, the change in fortunes for both machines is down to hardware line-up changes.

The Elite model and price reductions for existing Premium and Core versions were responsible for the 360 sales surge, which continued into a second week - falling only 20 per cent.

But on the other hand, the imminent launch of the Slim and Lite PSP on 14th September has stopped you lot splashing your cash on the current model.

Unfortunately Chart-Track declined to supply specific sales figures for either Xbox 360 or PSP.

Permanently on the rise at GamesIndustry.biz is fact finding, which is up endless per cent week-on-week.

this means as much in the grand scheme of things as PS3's price drop and subsequent sales boost. That said I think the PS3 sales only doubled not tripled.
  • miiiguel #5 5 years ago

Bioshock did more for the 360 than any other title until now. Games make a console success (well the brand can help too - Playstation - but with no games + huge price, it'll atract only the football a-like fans).
  • Fernando #6 5 years ago

lets hope they dont red ring anymore :)

PS3 has had a price cut?!
  • RexRunti #8 5 years ago

    well a "value" increase
  • bigJaffa #9 5 years ago

    ehhh....

The psp has sold poorly cause there's no stock. Its all cleared cause they're launching the Slim model.

    check amazon, play, game etc.

and everyone's holding off for the slim model too.

  • RexRunti #10 5 years ago

    @big jaffa

That's what they said in the article
  • miiiguel #11 5 years ago

PSP is an interesting device, it sells quite well but it doesn't sell games (not to mention movies, forget that UMD shit...).
Anyway, my gf is in the US and she sees loadsa people with a PSP, but she says they use it like a media device for podcasts and stuff, not really gamers.

So to summarise Xbox 360's price cut increases sales while everyone is waiting for the PSP slim.

EG didn't even try to gloss the article with humour or anything. :(
  • miiiguel #13 5 years ago

    360 had a price cut ?

    360 had a price cut ?

Well, more like a "value" increase, called BioShock...
  • Sebo #17 5 years ago

    @miiguel

Bioshock hasn't done as much for xbox 360 as gears of war did
  • evild_edd #18 5 years ago

I'd say a price cut combined with Elite launch and Bioshock release was always going to amount to a heft sales increase... the important thing is that it wasn't just a 1 week hit - as the article says, the second week was strong as well.

As a 360 owner who has unforunately suffered RRoD, I can still say it's a cracking machine with a great selection of games (for my taste, anyway - predominently action, racing, shooter... could do with a few more adventure games mind). I'm happy it's benefitting.

I'd expect a similar effect when Halo 3 gets released. And, again, for Mass Effect (if it lives up to the hype). Should be big sales for 360 this year.
  • The-Bodybuilder #19 5 years ago

    >"Bioshock did more for the 360 than any other title until now."

Wasn't the award allocated to gears?
  • miiiguel #20 5 years ago

Sebo: I can be wrong, but I think it did. As anyone knew the Gears thing, blockbusters, guns, awesome art, focus on MP, typical XBox crowd. Now BioShock brought a new crew to the system. This is worth what is worth, but 3 collegues of mine after spendig almos a week gogling for a new video card to play the best game of the century (so far), ended up buying 360's.
  • FooAtari #21 5 years ago

miiiguel is a about Bioshock fanboy judging by posts elsewhere. I think GoW has been the 360's most important game so far. I think there are better games personally, but if any game helped shift some units it was GoW.
  • miiiguel #22 5 years ago

"miiiguel is a about Bioshock fanboy"

    guilty
  • Darren #23 5 years ago

Without actual figures the data is meaningless. For example, if the Xbox 360 sold 100,000 units per week and then sold 260,000 units that's impressive. However, if it was selling 1,000 units per week and now 2,600 then it isn't quite so amazing.
  • Moz #24 5 years ago

Will make MS happy, don't see Sony loosing any sleep over it though.

None these figers mean anything on a week to week basis it's when you look at a 6 month or more period that you can't start drawing conclusions. I'm not currently expecting a Sega Saturn or Dreamcast scale demise for Sony.

Hopefully by the end of this gen the market will be a little more evenly spread.
  • miiiguel #25 5 years ago

@biker_bob: I'm sympathetic with your issue, but I have my 360 since 02/Dec/2005 and never had any problem.

My PSP was replaced twice, and I ended up with still 3 dead pixels (Sony only replaces units with more than 5...).

3 dead pixels, no big deal you may say. Yeah, if only they stop staring at me all the freakin time...

    RE: biker_bob

Not that I give too much credence to what that Kato guys says normally, but aren't you the same poster that suffered through multiple 'old' 360 failures? And now, surprise, surprise, you're on your THIRD Elite in TWO weeks?

You'll forgive me if I choose to call bullshit on your claims. Maybe Kato was right after all. Maybe you are an anti-MS troll, under the guise of a supposedly disgruntled Xbox 360 'owner'. Maybe you're on some pointless and misguided FUD-spread quest?

Maybe not. But at this stage, it's really becoming difficult to seperate fact from fiction with regards your claim. I know MS' hardware is shonky and all, but your occurences just seem a bit out there....

biker_bob: yeah..., I mean I love the machine (360), well not the box, the games (couldn't care less what's in the box), but MS helpdesk can be quite elegant or extremely arrogant, I've been through their service because of a defective Live code (the glue screwed a few chars), and lived both sides.

I love Dutch TV, it makes the best programs!!!
  • mazzl #39 5 years ago

in defence of biker_bob the elite does still have the old motherboard (no falcon), it should have a better heatsink dough (not 100% shure).... so the elite is not a better machine, same as the new premiums comming out.
but if you have this much consoles dying on you, you should reconsider placing or air-flow or someting... that's just not bad luck anymore thats just weird.
do you actually turn the machine off when you go to bed?

i have a premium myself late 2006, a bit noisy but works great so far.

biker_bob, you should wait a while for the falcon mobo to get released, won't be long now.
  • Skooch #40 5 years ago

So, who should we look out for on Dutch TV? A heavy set fellow wearing a leather jacket, a helmet in his hand and 'Bob' tatooed on his forearm?
  • Goffee #41 5 years ago

360 cheaper... PSP to be replaced... smell the journalism
  • cyacomini #42 5 years ago

Certainly within my circle of friends, Bioshock has done WAY more for the 360 than GoW ever did.

    Example.

GoW : Hey, that looks pretty nice - do you get to do anything apart from shoot stuff?

Bio : Wow, that looks like a film. How did they make the water so realistic? Can you play some more, i was just getting in to the story. Arghhh.... she's creepy. Must buy this.
  • Beano #43 5 years ago

"My PSP was replaced twice, and I ended up with still 3 dead pixels (Sony only replaces units with more than 5...)."

That sucks... I guess the country you are from have shit consumer rights?
If I ever bought a PSP (or other consumer product) with any dead pixels, I would return it to the store for a full refund - no questions asked.

Anyway, just got my second PSP today... a PSP "slim" silver with no dead pixels just like my "fat" launch unit ;)

  • BastoJ #47 5 years ago

On the 360 thing, I've had mine since launch and it still works fine, then again I don't spend as long as some might on it (can't afford every new game :().
  • Sebo #48 5 years ago

    @cycacomini

"Bio : Wow, that looks like a film."

You've got to be joking me. Bioshock looks nothing like a film and the storyline is terrible. This isn't a patch on Metal Gear 3or Resi 4 as far as story goes.
  • miiiguel #49 5 years ago

Beano: no, no..., it's an EU directive, I checked..., they're only forced to replace LCD devices with more than 5 damaged pixels. Consumers rights associations are trying to impose a percentual value (still sucks, should be zero defect!). Still 5 dead pixels on a PSP isn't the same as in a 24" LCD monitor.

But it really depends on the brand (or item, I guess Sony had too many of these issues to afford to be nice): My father bought a Samsung 32" LCD that came with a sigle dead one and they replaced the TV, and said "sorry, please buy Samsung again".

Absolutely not. I haven't reached the end yet, but I'm pretty sure I'm near it. And so far the "story" has been absolute dross!!!

miiiguel : "no, no..., it's an EU directive, I checked..., they're only forced to replace LCD devices with more than 5 damaged pixels."

I'm aware of that but in my country (Denmark) we have the right to return any consumer goods no matter what brand. For purchases in physical stores it's 8 days, and for online stores is's 14 days. I've used this quite a few times over the years where I wasn't satisfied with a product - once I actually returned a DS to one store when I found out I cound buy it cheaper another place ;)
I guess our local consumer laws overrides the EU laws on this point.

  • Inflatable #60 5 years ago

biker_bob, and what do you think programs like Kassa etc will achieve? Nothing has changed since the last time the Xbox 360 was on Kassa for the 'disc scatching' issue.. And all MS will say again is 'we're sorry and replace your Xbox 360 for free'.. I also don't know what trouble you had with Xbox support, but to me they've been really nice, I even got a free game for my trouble when I had to send in my launch Xbox 360 for repair and it took 2 weeks longer then normal for them to fix it.. My replacement Xbox 360 has worked perfectly since.. So yes, I think your just very unlucky if what you say is true and every single Xbox 360 you receive brakes within a week or 2, even the latest Elite models..

All the hardware problems doesn't seem to keep people from buying Xbox 360's though.. Plenty of good games and a affordable price obviously still makes a gameconsole.. And with a 3-year warranty there's nothing to worry about really..

Micro_Explosion No sorry it is suspicious... to use the line that was being thrown around before july: circumstancial evidence(ie far far fewer... infact the only other failed Elite post Ive read was... from him) points to a huge inprovement with the new heatsinks(Im not even bothered about the falcon personally, when I do buy a 360 the heatsink will do me, you know because heat was the problem and thats what they are designed for, its not rocket science). Now looking at his posts I can see "evil - lying MS" ect, it IS strange you have to admit, whether this is some extreem fanboyism/FUD or not.

What I don't understand, Bob, is why you are still in the Xbox game then. You realize doing a TV show like you are (apparently) doing will hurt the 360's reputation (if it's true I'm not saying that it's unwarranted), yet you say you've gone through I don't know how many in the past 18 months.

It just doesn't make sense. Why do you keep buying them. Over and over and over and over again. Then complain endlessly, now devote your no-doubt valuable time to doing a television show about the problem.

It does not seem like rational behavior to me...
  • AFX #70 4 years ago

Haven't really seen biker_bob complain endlessly but he does have the right to complain. Also, he doesn't buy them over and over....he gets them replaced. That's what a 3 year warranty does. From what I've read he bought a premium and then an Elite.

hey biker_bob...what are artificial adornments? tattoos?

Interesting!...an eloquent hairy sex machine biker gamer.
  • el_pollo_diablo #72 4 years ago

As tempted as I am to get a 360, the hardware problems are a serious showstopper.
Most of the people I know with them have had o replace theirs, and it appears that the dodgy hardware is still being shipped.

I want one for some of the games, but I expect my machine to last a lot longer than 3 years, after all. I still play my N64!
  • miiiguel #73 4 years ago

el_pollo_diablo: not willing to make a judgement on your income, but even if a consumer electronics such as the AMAZING 360 ( Vic ;) ), breaks after 3 years, it would have worth the 300 Eur or so, it's not like it's the price of a car or a PS3, right ?

"Now, the games, that's another matter! But the PS3 in itself is great and well worth the money."

Surely a Playstation with nothing decent to play is worth nothing at all? A games console is only as good as the games available for said console.
  • Dizzy #78 4 years ago

    >Surely a Playstation with nothing decent to play is worth nothing at all?

Maybe he uses it as a doorstop?
  • Kryon #79 4 years ago

Most of things you just mentioned could also be done on an old Panasonic 3DO. Everything you've just mentioned (and more) can be done on a cheap PC.

So no, I still believe the PS3 is pretty much worthless without a selection of good exclusive games. I don't buy into this 'media hub' nonsense. Every bloody device has to be a media hub these days rather than just do the freakin job they're intended for. My phone's a media hub, my MP3 player is a media hub, it's all a load of bollocks, I buy consoles for games. You want a media hub, get a PC it's cheaper/better and even has some AAA games to play (but as you already own a PC) your PS3 is (at present) useless and worthless imo. If you want to justify your PS3 purchase by filling it with pics and play music on it, that's up to you but just seems silly to me... Maybe I'm just old fashioned, not sure :)
  • Kryon #80 4 years ago

It's not about money Bob, I'm sure any of us here (of working age) could easily afford a PS3 if we wanted one but why bother? What, because it 'goes' with your curtains? I'm sure your PS2 could also play your PS1 & 2 games, so once again, in my view a total waste of money (regardless of how much you have). It's just another (rather large) shiny box that does things you could already do with devices you already own (bar maybe HD movies but a stand alone HD movie player is only £179 these days) so that holds little water either anymore.
