UFC is undisputed US champ for May News

PC PlayStation 2 PSP DS Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii

12 June, 2009

THQ's UFC 2009: Undisputed dominated US software sales in May as the games market on the whole slumped 23 per cent year on year.

Undisputed on Xbox 360 was the best-selling game, shifting nearly 680,000 copies, while the PS3 version was fourth with around 335,000.

Sony's PS3-exclusive inFamous managed just under 176,000, putting it fifth, but the game only came out in the US on 26th May.

Elsewhere, Nintendo continued to enjoy strong sales with Wii Fit at two, Pokemon Platinum, Mario Kart Wii and Punch-Out!! at six, seven and eight, and Wii Play rounding out the top ten.

Meanwhile, EA's strategy of releasing a Western-angled fitness game in EA Sports Active seems to have paid off to some extent, with around 345,000 sales putting it at third - just behind Wii Fit.

On the hardware front, DS dominated with nearly 635,000 sales, followed predictably enough by Wii with nearly 290,000, while Xbox 360 held firm on 175,000 and the three PlayStation consoles were responsible for around 350,000 units sold in total.

The DS was down considerably on April, but then April saw the launch of the Nintendo DSi. NPD doesn't break out the individual unit sales.

Analysts pointed out that the 23 per cent annual decline wasn't exactly brilliant news, but made a few encouraging noises about the June line-up. See below for the breakdown of figures and charts.

US hardware sales for May (rounded):

  1. Nintendo DS - 633,500
  2. Wii - 289,500

Well, UFC is kinda huge now so no surprises its done well. The only oddness is the disparity in sales between the 360 and PS3 versions(much wider than I'd expect). which I assume is down to PS3 owners having to decide between UFC and inFamous.

Well, yeha the difference in the 2 platforms on the UFC sales is huge but then agaion even if you combine the InFamous with the UFC still its like halfway to the ammount of units they sold with just UFC on the 360.

What i dont get is HOW MANY MORE FREAKING MILLIONS ARE THERE TO END UP BUYING Wii Fit EVERY DAMN TIME? OMFG its getting old you know. ppl cant ALL be that lazy to go to an actual damn gym. Not ALL off them!

There seem to be a lot of sandbox games here or coming soon. Maybe it's a victim of saturation.

Also it hasnt had even a tiny fraction of UFC's marketing.

I cannot decide if I want to buy Prototype or InFamous, I am sure I would rather play Crackdown 2 instead but that is months away. I wonder if the Count could give me some sage advice.

Also it is amazing that the old PS2 continues to sell so well....surely anyone who wanted one would already have one by now. Good work Sony.

I've been watching UFC battles since I was 10. People are searching like mad for news or videos of Eng vs nz, and some of us (Yankees) don't know what it means. It means England versus New Zealand, and unfortunately it's for the ICC Championship tests in South Africa, and not for the Autumn rugby international test matches. The Black Caps will take on the Poms and hopefully shut them down – but it may not be the most likely thing in the world. New Zealand is the greatest cricket team around these days – but cricket is not among the Three R's in the Land of the Long White Cloud. (Those would be Rugby, Racing, and beeR.) That said, when Eng vs. nz IS the autumn international tests – it's gonna be worth payday loans to watch the poms get crushed by the Blackness.
