Ubisoft unveils Splinter Cell special edition

Exclusive game mode, armour, statue, etc.

Ubisoft has unveiled the Collector's Edition of Splinter Cell: Conviction.

Due out alongside the regular game for PC and Xbox 360 on 26th February, the Conviction CE consists of the game, a statue of Sam Fisher wearing Jason Bourne's top and crushing some Third Echelon goggles under his foot, an official soundtrack featuring "more than 17 tracks" and a steelbook case.

There are also in-game goodies included, most notably "Infiltration Mode", where you must "eliminate all hostiles in the mission area without being detected". You also get a special playable skin ("Shadow Armour"), and early access to the SC300, SR2 and MP5 weapons.

Ubisoft plans to show off the game's multiplayer modes for the first time in a trailer due on Xbox Live tomorrow at 5pm UK time. You can read our hands-on impressions of those modes on Friday, 18th December at 5pm assuming the embargo holds.

Meanwhile, there's a Collector's Edition walkthrough video on Eurogamer TV showcasing the above.

A special edition for SC? Wow, this will have to join all the other special editions I have in my trophy cabinet in the south wing next to the sixteen car garage.

    Ugh plastic figurines. >:-|

The Forza 3 special edition really showed how it's done imo - a beautiful box, something useful inside (USB stick) and some cool (but not essential) in-game content. I don't think I'd ever buy a special edition with a plastic figurine in it.

Special Editions: I'm sure people buy them, I just have no idea why. I shall stick to the £30 or less vanilla PC version, thx.

There was an equivalent to the action figurine in Demon's Souls. It was called the Ring Of Gash Resistance.

It's only an exclusive game mode untill they release it as premium DLC to the rest of the world.

While most I can do without, I'm angry about that really cool sounding game mode being included. That's not an addition, that's part of the game dammit!

What the hell is going on with pre-orders and special editions? Why is a game mode exclusive to this package?
  • cianchristopher #12 2 years ago

I really hope they don't delay this on PC...

    But I'm afraid they will...

Steelbook - wont fit in any collection - there isnt a standard steelbook size!
Soundtrack CD - mmm OK if that is your bag. There is a reason this wont feature ANYWHERE in the charts.
In game content - a flipped finger to anyone buying the 'steerage' version.
Plastic Doll - Good lord - there IS something wrong with adults who collect this crap.

Regarding the forza high carbon edition -
some crappy 2gb memory stick to sit with all the other memory sticks I have laying about
    A shiny keyring to scrap
A plastic covered cardboard box for my local landfill
And some in game content that I wouldnt have bought the game without - good job it was £30 at game.

I am an ardent hater of crappy tat and plastic excess, which the games industry seems to be embracing of late.

By and large I agree with everything else you said, but what has chart position got anything to do with the quality of a piece of music? The soundtrack for Chaos Theory was excellent for example, I doubt it charted very well. Excuse me for not caring ;)

Rewind about 3 years and people were complaining that special editions had nothing special in them and were just in nicer boxes. They were going on and on about when special editions used to give you actual physical stuff.

Now they do that again and everyone's complainging again.

    Moan moan moan.

All I want is the in-game mode! To get that, I have to pay an inflated price because of the rest of the tat...

    Gameplay. Just give me gameplay!

An awesome term that completely sums up this crap. I bought a "special edition" of Assassin's Creed II from GAME. It was €5 more than the basic one because it had a special bonus level. Leaving the shop I was a bit pissed with them for doing this crap and me for actually buying it (and thus helping to ensure that they'll continue to pull this kind of crap). I'll buy a "special edition" of the new Splinter Cell if it's €5 more and has this bonus mode but I'm damned if I'm paying €30 for a bunch of shite I don't want.

Yes I know they're not-good-value-for-money-cheap-tat but I for one like all these special edition's of games including the various plastic figurines they sometimes come with. I'm sorry but I just do! Every time a game I want is released I say "Right, Im definatly just buying the standard version with this one" but nearly always end up going for the special edition. I dont know why, maybe its a problem Ive got, but I'm not ashamed! So there, all you plastic tat hating folk!!
  • autogunner #20 2 years ago

they will all be the same price on play within a month, and the extra play mode will be included in the code, so will be cracked on the PC probably before the game has shipped...
