Ubisoft sides with amBX News

PC News by Patrick Garratt

7 January, 2008

Ubisoft is to include Philips' amBX tech in some of its major upcoming titles, confirming today at Las Vegas’ CES that Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway and Far Cry 2 will both feature support for the ambient product.

amBX is being shown at CES working on both Brothers in Arms Hell's Highway and Far Cry 2, which were recently delayed by Ubisoft until the next fiscal year, beginning April 2008.

amBX allows developers to include "surround sense" elements in games through various peripherals, including light, colour, sound, rumble and air flow through enabled devices like fans, LED-powered lights, and so on.

"Working with one of the world’s largest publishers on two of the most successful gaming franchises of all time is an amazing opportunity for our amBX technology to really shine in front of a worldwide audience," said amBX COO, Jo Cooke. "Brothers in Arms Hell's Highway and Far Cry 2 are titles that will showcase just how powerful and in your face amBX effects can be in a war game. This is just the start of the alliance between amBX and Ubisoft and the level of our comarketing with Ubisoft will underline our dedication to bringing all-new ambient effects to world class games."

Other publisher announcements related to amBX are on the way, but Philips is keeping further details under wraps for now. The technology only works with PC titles at the moment, but Philips assures us that console announcements are on the way soon.

I'm sure the effects will be a lot more subtle than first appears to be the case. I can hardly see a fan conveying the blast of a shell landing in your back pocket.

Actually, looking at that website I linked, I can see the backlight being quite effective in some cases. Imagine Bioshock with blues and yellows casting across your walls when you are surrounded by water or fire respectively.....

.... I still remain skeptical about the fans.

Why the Hell are they using Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon, a title from 2003, to show it off though!?

i was one of the Eurogamer winners on this kit, quite fun really, although the rumble strip is a bit pointless.

Also, it isn't 100% compatible with Vista at the moment, although i sort of have it all working.

The lights are cool though, and the fans... hmmm...

If (while I'm dreaming) you get one of them fancy Aurea TVs, will it work with amBX games?

Saw an item on tv about this, I can see how it could be fun but bet its nowhere near worth the price of the peripherals

Bioshock actually works with the Ambx lights already and yes it does add a fair bit to the experience if you play in a dimly lit room.

The fans on the other hand are crap, noisy and you can barely feel them plus the cables are far too short for me to position them properly (I play my PC mainly on a Plasma TV, not stuck in front of a monitor). The fans that Philips demoed Ambx with to developers were much bigger, which makes for a quieter and more breezy fan, but where are you going to put it so that someone doesn't keep tripping over it?

What's nice about Ambx is that it for now uses proprietary tech, but the software support input from all kinds of connected devices, if the manufacturers make it work with it.

So you could hook it up to your existing lights, curtains etc. and not need a special setup.

It will then also work with your movies etc. which could be pretty cool.

Good post and link :)

I nuuu it :). There is a friend of mine who a) buys all sorts of mad widgets for his PC, and b) plays Bioshock on PC and loves it. So this might have been a guaranteed sale.... except for.... £140 for the basic lights? Ouch. One to scour ebay for in about 6 months maybe.

You can actually get reality effects for any game from http://www.a-r-e.nl

Worth checking out; I have it connected to both desktop gaming station and arcade cabinet and the light effects are AWESOME.

They also have an AI that can understand what's on the screen - heat, fire, smoke, but I did not yet get their smoker :))
