Ubisoft doing Call of Juarez prequel

Techland to deliver this year.

Ubisoft has announced a prequel to Wild West shooter Call of Juarez and plans to release it on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 sometime this year - presumably the latter part, this being the first we've heard of the game.

Dubbed Bound in Blood, the action revolves around Thomas and Ray McCall. Ray, you may recall, is Reverend Ray from the first Call of Juarez; the retired gunslinger turned preacher. Thomas is the other protagonist Billy Candle's stepfather, and we're presumably going back to the brothers' rough and tumble heydays.

The six-shooter fanning and spur-clanging action of the prequel takes place down around the Aztec ruins of Mexico, and we're promised plenty of greed, lust and lawlessness.

Otherwise there's not much information to go on; we don't know, for instance, whether there will be the separate stealth and shooter sections that defined Call of Juarez.

We do know Polish developer Techland will once again be steering the wagon, and that our 8/10 for the first game puts this squarely on our ooh-interesting horizon.

Ray McCall. Ray, you may recall, is Reverend Ray

    :D

Interesting. Quite liked the first one, even if it was a bit hit and miss.

the first one was quite good, loved the bow and arrow bullet time aiming :)

Oohh, good news! Techland always delivers interesting games. Now if they only could get that Dead Island project finished and out on the PC too! Really looking forward to that one. Let's hope it hasn't been canned.

By the way, can't Eurogamer (it is EURO-gamer after all!) do a preview and send someone to visit the Techland offices? They seem to have a lot of interesting projects going on up there. It's in Poland. Send Ellie.

Absolutely loved the first one (seem to be the only person I know who was so enthusiastic, but hey!) so this is probably the best news i've ever heard, in my life, ever.

Loved the first one, quite looking forward to this but where's Dead Island??

yeah i thought the first one was really good, and looked incredible on PC. there needs to be more games based on westerns!

i'll prob get this if it is as good as the first, the only thing making me think twice is Ubisofts involvement, screw that shitty company.

Woo! Slight problem though: this sounds like it'll be before Ray took up the Bible, which means no awesomely melodramatic passages being read out as you shoot men in the face :(

Yeah, and it being set in Mexico among Aztec ruins perhaps means not so many dramatic mountainside chases or scenes in Saloons. Still, hope for the best! There are still mountains in Mexico, after all.

Call of Juarez is one of the most under-appreciated games ever. I got it free with a graphics card, and was very pleasantly surprised.

It's great news that it's getting a sequel. Lets hope Ray finds God somewhere in the plotline so we can get our righteous vengeance bible-slinging on.

    Yes!!!!!

And like mkreku said, make an EGTV show about Techland's premises, I'm really curious what's going on in there.

Excellent news. CoJ was one of the finest FPSes to be ignored by the shovelware-swallowing masses.
  • autogunner #13 3 years ago

Call of Juarez was great, but the first mission was so dire. other bits were amazing though, especially climbing that mountain and charging your horse around that huge open plain.

What!? This guy quotes the bible before he kills people? Damn I've been missing out, might pick this up tommorow!

Gotta join in with the CoJ love. Like Autogunner says the first mission is a bit... of a shame, but after that it's really an excellent game. Ray's dual-wield mechanic is probably my favourite implementation of bullet time ever, and the scene with the Josey Wales style hand cranked mg is pure awesome on a stick.

You can probably pick it up for next to nothing now (if memory serves there is even a dx10 version, although you'd need a very powerful rig to play it).
