Ubisoft and Pelé making Wii footy game News

Wii News by Robert Purchese

20 May, 2009

Ubisoft has unveiled Wii-exclusive football game Academy of Champions. It will work with both the balance board and Wii MotionPlus peripherals when it's released later this year.

Legendary footballer Pelé is helping Ubisoft make the game, and will coach "kids and their families" through the Academy until they have the skills and the players to take on and beat rival Academies.

Ubisoft describes the game as a "rich, story-driven adventure" that's both "humorous" and "over-the-top". Actual gameplay specifics, however, are scarce; we're not sure whether you'll be playing football like in PES or FIFA, for instance.

Pelé's head looks funny in the concept artwork.

We'll let you know more when we do, which will probably be at E3 next week.

I'd say more like a 2 or 3/10.

Can't we have at least one Wii sport game where the characters don't look super-deformed?

How the hell are the balance board and Motionplus going to be used in a football game?

I suppose the MotionPlus might allow you to aim throw ins..but other than that ?

Maybe it's just for training modes and minigames..as I can't see how it would work for football itself.

Pairing the two gives the system a hell of a lot of information about how your body is positioned which can be reflected on screen for hitting the ball.

Does that not suggest that you're only going to be controlling one player in a game then? Otherwise every player on the team will be doing exactly the same movements as the person controlling the game?

Maybe you stick the motion controller in your sock, or strap it to your calf or something.. Then you stand on the balance board and practice passing and shooting - and it examines your stance and stroke. Still not brilliant, if all you do is stand still and poke your leg out a bit.
