Ubi down to two PS3 launch titles

Oblivion, GRAW 2, Double Agent, Rainbow Six all for later.

Ubisoft's ranks of PlayStation 3 launch titles were reduced yesterday as Splinter Cell: Double Agent slipped a week, Rainbow Six: Vegas and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 both disappeared into the distance and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion ran away for a month.

Blazing Angels and Enchanted Arms will both still be available in three days' time, at PS3's 23rd March launch, but Double Agent will only arrive on the 30th, while Oblivion is now down for 27th April. Ubisoft declined to comment on why the latter - released in the US this week - had slipped.

Meanwhile, the French publisher's latest schedule lists Rainbow Six: Vegas as "spring" (not the PS3's favourite word) while GRAW 2 is down for "June", whenever that is.

Abandon ship! Abandon ship! Imminent launch disaster!
  • morriss #2 5 years ago

oh dear. They're all generic shooters anyway, right kids?!
  • Blerk #3 5 years ago

Interesting that they've delayed all the ones that people were actually likely to buy. So... ship the 'more rubbish' games at launch when people will buy any old tat, save the ones that are actually any good for later.

Sorry, my cynicism chip is overheating. I must go get a drink.

    Wait, we're talking about
Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Rainbow Six: Vegas, GRAW2, Oblivion, Blazing Angels and Enchanted Arms here, right...?

Oh please no you evil bastards. Why? Why?

Slipage to see how many consoles sell at launch, otherwise they make no money out of it. Currently it's looking dire for launch sales at the moment.

Blazing Angels? You lucky PS3 owners!

    *regrets even downloading the demo*

Well, at least the best two titles are available for day-1...

Well, I actually quite enjoyed Enchanted Arms on the 360.

Edit: Just realised the only games I don't own in that list are Blazing Angels and Splinter Cell. I need to get out more... or maybe buy Splinter Cell...

Thank God! It's gonna save me some money (like, 600€) - at least for some time.
  • Mr_Brown #16 5 years ago

Haha...wonder if Sony are going to try and sue British Rail for this train wreck...

I think it's more to do with the fact that PS3 sales have been so weak, and the Euro launch doesn't look like it'll be any different. They want to wait until some more people actually have a PS3 before launching their biggest games, otherwise hardly anyone will buy them no matter how good they are.
  • Arwin #18 5 years ago

I agree with Blerk. Strategic decision, clearly.
  • Moz #19 5 years ago

    @chupachups

They can't wait too long or they'll be seen as "old" games and not sell well anyway.

Just don't get some of these deals, I can understand spreading things out a little but June for GRAW2!!!! Surely they can't have that many bugs to work out of the graphics engine!! At this rate they'll have to do a NAMCO and release it as GRAW"3" (honest it's different and better then GRAW2 on 360) *cough* RR7 *cough*

Me thinks this could be MS's big pockets at work!

I may sound sinicle and fanboyish, but i'm thinking more of the future of gaming. I love my x360 but can we really afford for MS to completely smash Sony and gain a monopoly on the high-end games market?

Makes sense...but you have to wonder whether the sales will suffer even more being even more delayed after their multformat counter parts. They will probably get more sales for those titles in the buzz of the launch than they would a few weeks after (or months) because the titles will be old hat and the console will lose its initial wow factor and people will want something new to back up their purchase by then. If it is a strategic move, I'm not sure if its a good one...

Bizarre how UbiSoft has delayed its better games in favour of perhaps the two worst received ones (although I have to confess that I loved Enchanted Arms on the 360).

Sony aren't capable of making strategic moves as they've clearly demonstrated.

This is obviously yet another appalling cash-gouging manouvre aimed at getting loyal Sony fans to spend money on utter shite before releasing the decent stuff. I don't know how people are willing to put up with this kind of treatment I really don't.

Re "the title will be old hat" - they're already old hat, they'll just be older hat!
  • glaeken #23 5 years ago

Wow so I won't get the chance to play these games that have already been available for ages on the 360 (well maybe not GRAW2).

Presumably Sony is aiming at gamers who have been held captive for the last year or so and denied all access to media of any sort. I have to think that is a bit of a niche market.

    games nobody should care about
  • chrisjm #25 5 years ago

there was only ever 1 launch game really worth getting, and still is. Save your £500 folks ;)
  • Downside #26 5 years ago

This has noting to do with Sony, I thought Ubisoft were an independent company.. Titles slipping into next financial year for tax reasons perhaps?

Apart from that, why have a gazillion titles at launch, most people will only buy the console and a game or two and then wait for next pay-day to pick up further titles. I guess most people will be picking up a PS3 with RfoM and Motorstorm, so why launch against them?

Playstation 3 is very difficult to develop games for. That is why games are almost always released first for the Xbox 360, and the Xbox 360 versions have better graphics and more online features.

Playstation 3 is a poorly designed product when compared to the Xbox 360, and at this point in time we are clearly seeing the results of that fact.
