Two Worlds sequel this winter News

Xbox 360 PC PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

3 July, 2009

TopWare (now owned by Zuxxez) has announced a sequel to Oblivion-alike RPG Two Worlds.

Memorably dubbed Two Worlds II, the game will appear on Mac, "next-gen consoles" and PC this winter.

The sequel has been in development for two years and makes "quantum leaps" in all areas, boasts the press release. AI has been overhauled, authors ditched and a brand-new combat engine employed. Not in place of the authors, obviously.

It will be an "unforgettable experience where excitement, sheer enjoyment and graphics rule", which is presumably why the statement goes into bizarre depth about all the graphical techniques used. Boring, says I. Screenshots are much easier.

Two Worlds II is set two years after the first game, where new adventures in brand-new locations "packed full of atmosphere" await.

Developer Reality Pump is owned by Zuxxez too, and the split from previous publisher SouthPeak appears to be a big deal, enabling fan feedback to be incorporated, development time taken and a "breathtaking experience" to emerge.

The original Two Worlds, however, was "a mess", as our review points out. "Average but quite charming" on PC, but dreadfully converted to Xbox 360.

No, Richard Leadbetter does that for them as part of Digital Foundary, it's entirely up to Rob if he's not as into the graphical nitty gritty as some.

I'm one of those strange people who really liked Two Worlds. I played nothing else until I'd finished it. I guess it reminded me of Gothic but of course it's nowhere near as good as that.

They really cocked up on the cut-scenes and dialogue though - even I had to mute all the voices. I'm all for giving them a second chance.

WTF is up with the commenters above about graphics? Do people not realise that the site is run by more than one person? Since when do the staff have to act like cult members, all toeing the party line?!

I really tried to like Two Worlds.. but I failed. I got a fair bit into it before giving up though.

I will keep an extremely cautious eye on the sequel.

The first was one of the most hilarious broken games I've played. Hope they keep the feature where aggro'd creatures would never ever give up chasing you, resulting in a massive train of beasts following the player wherever they went.

"You say its boring to talk about graphics yet dedicate pages and pages of your website to the smallest of graphical details between games and call them face offs and other such bullshit.

Sounds to me like you don't even know what you like. "

What's your problem? That was just a flippant comment to introduce the screenshot link.

Oh yeah, and hope they keep the feature where you could somehow combine all the samey equipment you found, making your own equipment more and more powerful, seemingly limitless. I remember having like a Superman Golden Longsword of Ultimate Destruction +1000 after level 10 or so..

Haha... Two Worlds... well I was definitely in two minds about the game that's for sure! On the one hand it was so poor coded, so laughably voice-acted, so graphically atrocious and so badly scripted that it was a contender for the worst game ever never mind worst RPG. This is the Xbox 360 version by the way. But do you know what, I actually got some enjoyment out of it. I don't know how, maybe the reality was that I stuck with it to see if it got any worst. It's like someone played Oblivion, decided they wanted to make a better game but lacked the skills, time and finances to do so. Not even close and definitely no cigar!

Oblivion is a flawless classic in comparison to Two Worlds!

While I'll certainly be interested to see how the sequel does, I've lowered my expectations enormously so there's absolutely no chance I'll be shocked, appalled or disappointed when it turns out to be another broken mess. I suggest everyone does the same too.

or, and here's a crazy thought, they could take some time away from cooing how pretty their game looks (especially when, judging by those screenshots, it looks decent at best) and concentrate on making the game playable, finished, and not shit?

I enjoyed the first. Read the reviews thought it was going to be terrible, rented it and didn't put it down for a week. Interested in the sequal, as far as rentals go.

If you all could just stop comparing it to Oblivion, maybe you could appreciate how good this game really was. Even the badly programmed X360 version.

They should be rewarding anybody who plays Two Worlds, whether they paid for it or not.

Many flaws games become clut classics, like the original Everquest. Players took the broke game and made it their own. I think people did that with Two Worlds.

I think we will see something better in the next two worlds, but I highly doubt any german developer will ever make a quality game like Oblivion. Even graphically they aways seem poorly done.

@Milbe - Oblivion and Two Worlds are very similar games so it's understandable that people will compare them. They're also at totally opposite ends of quality scale.

Two Worlds is a very amateurish game IMO, it's not totally unplayable but it's so rough and unfinished that I can't believe anyone could defend it. The ambition was clearly there but sadly the developers were unable to see it through.

Loved the first game, spent well over 50 hours on it. I have been looking forward for the sequel for years it would seem. Sacred 2 reminds me a lot of Two Worlds.

I like some broken, patchy games, like Sacred 2. Two Worlds just didn't cut it, was hideous. Hopefully II can do some good stuff.

I can agree with people who say some broken games can still be good, in fact, both Morrowind and Oblivion are severely broken to an extent yet are still excellent and acceptable (respectively) RPGs. However, there does come a point where a game is so much of a mess, and contains nothing to off-set that, to be considered anywhere near good -- Two Worlds is that.

There's no split from SouthPeak. It's still theirs in the UK and US as was the first game.

Played Two Worlds on PC with the 1.6 patch and thoroughly enjoyed it. The hammy acting, for me, was just hammy acting, nowhere near a deal breaker and it worked, when fully patched a lot better than Gothic 3 (when likewise fully patched). I've forgotten now what exactly I enjoyed most but I do remember horse riding my way across quite a lot of the landscape and enjoying that experience in particular.

The end game got a bit too bleak and boring but overall landscapes were well conceived, side stories decent, Large Towns/tiny villages contrasted well. Given the reports of the XBox version, I think the PC one was almost a completely different animal as I played from start to finish, encountering one, maybe two, significant bugs at most.

So hope they can deliver a good sequel as I would definitely go buy it based on my previous experience with it.

I liked the first Two Worlds mainly because of the twist that the protagonist was a sarcastic arsehole who speaks in ye olde tounge.

FORSOOTH! I will be looking forward to more of that dry dialouge in the sequel.

Another here who enjoyed Two Worlds, despite its many obvious flaws. Like Sacred II, it was unpolished and clunky, but that didn't stop the atmosphere and charm of the world pulling you in.

I say let's give the game a chance!
I've still to play the first one but its on queue. As i play every RPG i can get my hands on,
i await for this to be better than the first (judging from all those bad reviews).
Truthfully though, most bad reviews of RPGs turn out to be unfair (IMO). Its not the type of game to be quickly judged with 1-2 hours of gaming, and most reviewers dont have or dont spend much time on them.
