S.T.A.L.K.E.R. on sale this week
Save two-thirds and pay just £3.50.
The price of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is being slashed by 75 per cent this week on Steam.
That means the radioactive openworld shooter-cum-RPG is now only £3.50. The offer ends on 2nd November.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. took over one hundred years to make, but the wait was worthwhile; Shadow of Chernobyl - set around the Ukranian nuclear disaster zone - is a startlingly atmospheric game. Bugs upset the launch code, but by and large they have been ironed out. User-created mods, particularly Oblivion Lost, also add considerable legs to the 2007 PC shooter.
Catch-up with our S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl review to find out more.

STALKER has always been a rough diamond, burt there are a shed load of good mods out there to help polish it up.

I dunno, it's a question I face every time Steam has some good deal going! I recently bought the Company of Heroes pack when it was going on offer, even thought I had 2 of the 3 games on disc!
But Steam's great though, isn't it? I just got ARMA II for half-price at the weekend! The only reason I bought it was cos it was half-price! I'll be fucked if I'm actually going to play the fucking thing for more than a couple of hours, though! Just don't have the time! But.... I see a special offer on a game that looks interesting, and I just go for it (something I wouldn't bother with in the shops with physical media - even though that would make more sense given that I could sell/trade those games later on).

"Got this via D2D and can't get the BLOODY mods to work."
Mods work fine on the Steam version.

Good work fellas, and it's a great recommendation - Oblivion Lost is a serious improvement to what is already an excellent game.
I'm another one who bought it even though I already own the disc - the convenience of having it on Steam was worth the £3.50. If you don't own the game already, it's a complete no-brainer.

Also, for anyone having trouble getting mods to work, this is how you do it: unzip/rar the files right into the GAMEDATA folder within your main Stalker directory. Then, use Notepad to open the file in the Stalker directory called FSGAME.LTX
Look for a line that says:
$game_data$ = false| true| $fs_root$| gamedata\
and replace the word 'fasle' with 'true' like so:
$game_data$ = true| true| $fs_root$| gamedata\
And Bob's your uncle. Bear in mind that a lot of mods will conflict with each other, or weren't updated when the game was patched, or may otherwise break the game. Use at your own risk!
Also, for pity's sake play the game through at least once without the mods. I promise you won't regret it!
