Two new games from Spector News

PC News by Robert Purchese

14 March, 2007

Legendary game creator Warren Spector has two new titles currently in development at his Junction Point Studios, one a Hollywood collaboration, the other based on a world he created with his fantasy-writer wife.

"Things are going really well," he told Eurogamer at the Game Developer conference in San Francisco last week. "We're up to 24 people now, and we've got two IP that we've worked on and we've got several months of work into each of them."

"One of them we're working in collaboration with a fellow you would have heard of out of Hollywood and one of them is based on a game-world that I created about 15 years ago with my wife. I've been waiting for the technology to catch up with the ideas in there."

Spector broke away from Ion Storm to form his own development studio in 2004, with critically acclaimed games like Deus Ex, Thief and Ultima already under his belt.

He now wants to shake a bit of life back into the world of games, a market he believes is still too niche and enclosed, by delivering something new and original rather than a rehash of old experiences. He'd rather "fail spectacularly" than create another sports game or driving simulation.

"I think that most of what passes for a game, even now, just sucks. It's hard for me not to talk, but I've seen the dangers of doing that. I'm hoping that in the next couple of months we'll have something to say."

"I think when we do announce what we're doing, I think people are going to be very interested, very surprised and there'll be lots of people saying, 'Oh my God, I can't wait,' and a lot of people saying, 'He's completely out of his freakin' mind.' I can't wait."

Spector also rubbished recent rumours that Vivendi was publishing one of Junction Point's upcoming titles, saying the reports were completely unfounded.

Keep an eye on GamesIndustry.biz tomorrow for the full interview with Warren Spector. He's got a lot to say.

There are not many games I will buy with no prior investigation, but these will be on that list.

Even if they aren't fantastic, I feel confident they will still be good (DE2 and Thief 3 were both good, perhaps not to the expected hype, but they were still very well turned out games which stand against their peers).

Even at this early stage I am rather interested (which is rare for me, being the cynical "wait'n'see" type fellow that I am).

I know it's never going to happen, but another Deus Ex, more like the first and not like the second, would be the best thing EVER.

I like that attitude. I also like the slight dig at EA ;)

I like Warren. He's probably the most passionate designer I've ever met / seen speak.

I hope he gets the time and lack of interference to create something amazing.

Go Spector!

A new Deus Ex along the lines of the 1st would be amazing.
And a new Thief while you're there.

That's...interesting. Hope whatever this is ends up more like Deus Ex 1 than Deus Ex 2. Any game I can finish almost exclusively by throwing unexpectedly deadly furniture at people does not get my approval.

What's the guy's wife called?
