Two more MGS4 characters confirmed News

PlayStation 3 News by Rob Fahey

29 May, 2008

A scan from this week's Famitsu has popped up online, revealing two new characters who'll crop up in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

Or rather, two old characters who'll return - since we're talking here about Mai Ling (from Metal Gear Solid) and Rosemary (from Metal Gear Solid 2).

That's a bit of a double edged sword, really. Mai Ling, a naval officer with a curious habit of regaling you with utterly nonsensical Chinese proverbs, was a hugely popular character, even after an ill-advised change of voice actress in the Twin Snakes remake.

Rose, on the other hand, was Raiden's astonishingly annoying, whiny girlfriend, who seemed to exist solely to moan irrelevantly at him in incredibly over-long codec sequences. Less of that, please.

Details on the characters' roles in Metal Gear Solid 4 are scant - Famitsu's article falls back on simply reminding readers what they got up to in previous games, which is an approach we've blatantly nicked for this piece as well.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is apparently the last game in the Solid Snake story, although certainly not the end of the Metal Gear franchise, and will appear in the UK on June 12th.

I thought you meant playable characters and thought Koj had done another Raiden!

That would have been so funny.

Cant wait for this game.

I wouldn't call that a spoiler. I expect almost every character to be at least mentioned since it is supposed to tie up all loose ends.
To be honest, I never found Rose that annoying; maybe I just never payed any attention to her. All I remember her saying was something about an important date that Raiden should remember, not really caring that I was trying to save the world rather than remember her birthday or whatever it was. Damn woman.
Mai Ling was awesome...and cute.

Mei Ling has the same voice actress in The Twin Snakes, they just lost the accent. Smash Brothers is making it increasingly likely that change is now permenent.

The first MGS is the proper Mei Ling, any accent changes on Nintendo games don't count properly! I hated the Twin Snakes, changed to much of the audio needlessly. original soundtrack ftw.

I don't need this article to get hyped up, I'm already as hyped as I can go. But keep on hyping, I do like a good bit of hype.

I loved Twin Snakes, even though I'd done the original, there was enough there to make it fresh for a new play through. Although I did miss the music that plays when you get into the tank hanger for the first time.

I would stick it on my PSP if the emu allowed for proper analogue control. MGS was the first game that really needed it.
Also it will be a bit sad to see Psycho Mantis attempting to move my PSP across the floor with the power of his mind.
FAIL.

Lol, @Widge's statement. Poor old Psycho Mantis eh? Much less terrifying on a portable console.

It would be fairly terrifying if psycho mantis did manage to move your psp across the floor though...

@DFawkes

She lost the accent because she's American, it didn't make sense for her to be speaking with a Chinese accent.

True. But then you don't have the option to plug your controller into a second port so can he be defeated on the PSP?

I'm replaying MGS2 right now and my god is Rose annoying. She seriously couldn't care less about your mission and rather just wants to talk about your relationship and keeps bugging you to remember an important date tomorrow (anniversary, birthday, or some such nonsense). It would be hilarious if it didn't take so long.

Good point, I forgot about that. Let's debate ways of beating Psycho Mantis on the PSP guys...
I reckon throwing it against a wall would surely destroy him.
