Turn 10: Polyphony checked out Forza

GT devs dropped in to take notes at E3.

When they weren't showing off Gran Turismo PSP on-stage at the Sony conference or giving interviews, folks from Polyphony Digital were apparently checking out the competition at E3.

That's according to Turn 10's Che Chou, who wrote in his E3 aftermath blog (thanks Kotaku) about how two developers from Polyphony stopped by to take notes on the excellent-looking Forza Motorsport 3.

"Perhaps the most surprising [visit] was when a couple developers from Gran Turismo makers Polyphony Digital came by to personally get hands-on with Forza 3, all the while taking careful notes, examining our UI system, shooting photos, and directly asking us some pretty interesting questions," Chou wrote.

"The reason I say I was personally surprised was because PD aren't generally known as a studio to acknowledge that there are racing games that exist beyond their own. Which could explain why the GT franchise has been so stagnant in the racing genre since GT3. So it seems competition is good for the consumer after all. I know for a fact that Turn 10 will never stop pushing racing games to the next level."

Apparently Posh Spice also turned up to check out Forza 3, although Chou doesn't say whether she also took notes.

"Che is a he, so it makes me wonder if you didnt embellish this story or make it up based on second hand information and fanboy wishes"

    Ummm... what?!
  • Steroyd #3 3 years ago

Miyamoto was caught looking at the PSP Go.

    The worlds gone mad!

"Posh Spice? Is that the skeleton resembling one?"

I think that's a bit offensive to skeletons if you ask me...

How lovely... I gave the heads up on this on Saturday (or very early hours of Sunday to be precise) in the Forza 3 forum section (the exact same segment as the one quoted here too) and Eurogamer thank Kotaku, who only reported on it this morning... : ( I feel so unappreciated

    PatAU: "Che is a he"

Where in the story is it indicated that Che Chou is a she, or even has a gender at all?

il glad the gt ppl are looking at forza for good tips, just as i hope that turn 10 are lookign at gt for good tips.

itd be silly not to and id think less of both developers if they didnt.

Was one of the tips on how to actually release a game without delaying it for ages

Hey Tom Bramwell, is it true that you edited the story? Then you should have an "edited at TIMESTAMP" thing, that is pretty standard for net based media. Hell, I get an edit timestamp if I edit my post here, in fact I am going to edit this post later just to prove the point. But the articles themselves may be edited without any edit notice? That just is not right, and it weakens Eurogamers credibility. OK, so this particular edit is pretty pointless, but the principle is important. Credibility, accountability - should be big words even for game "journalists".

There, I edited it, see? See the "edited" notice?

Taking pictures eh? So this time they will be using pictures from Forza 3 instead of PGR4 to promote GT5? ;)
  • Emth #11 3 years ago

Yeah its not like GT4 was one of the most widely acclaimed successes of the PS2 generation... Why does he have to be such a cock? I can't see that they are even competing on a large scale. Most people people have their console of choice now, and people with both who love racing games will no doubt buy both for different reasons.

Note 1: Try not to make yourself sound like a tit at E3.

You have nothing better to do than whine?

"Note 1: Try not to make yourself sound like a tit at E3. "

He is making headlines so he must be doing something right.

"You have nothing better to do than whine?"

    Irony. ;)
  • El-Dev #16 3 years ago

Oh, I meant the guy who gave the presentation for Forza, it may well be a great game but he made himself look foolish.
  • DFawkes #17 3 years ago

    Translated Note:

"So you hit barriers, and you car is deformed in some way? Keeep doing it and it impairs car function? Hardly realistic!"

I'm just kidding, I love GT5P and Forza 2, so I have faith that both devs will do perfectly well in their game developing. I'd hate to think they'd make it too similar to Forza though, it's the things that are different that I like.

I've always thought it was a bit snobbish the way Polyphony Digital claim that they don't look at other racing games. I guess that explains why their games are always detailed and technically accurate as far as the vehicle models and handling but have never actually been great racing games IMO. The A.I. is usually woefully weak/predictable and there's little sense of speed, even when you're in a Ferrari (Gran Turismo 5 Prologue). That they are taking note of Forza 3 is great news, it means Gran Turismo 5 might actually be a decent racing game for a change. :)
  • jmg123 #19 3 years ago

If I were polyphony I would definetly check out forza, I would by an xbox and try it out to, always helps to know what the competition is upto , and maybe it will help spark a few ideas around. However the Forza guys sound like a right bunch of knobs, all this "stagnent, old school, dropped the baton afetr ps1, was good ten years ago, forza is the spirtual successor, pd want to copy all our stuff, gt5 has nothing we haven't done better..... etc" makes them sound like complete dicks trying to get column inches, they should try a more, "GT5 does it's thing, we do our thing, we like this about our great product have you seen our cool features" rather then spend all their time bad mouthing the competition and comparing themselves to gt3.

"Oh, I meant the guy who gave the presentation for Forza, it may well be a great game but he made himself look foolish. "

Yeah but my point is: You want to get as much spotlight time as possible. Making stupid comments does the job.
  • NotSoSlim #21 3 years ago

Is it me or are Turn 10 coming across as really arrogant? Anyway lets hope both games are great. GT5 is a proper sequel so it has to evolve
  • Triggerhappytel #22 3 years ago

"Which could explain why the GT franchise has been so stagnant in the racing genre since GT3."

What, in their one full release in that time?!

All developers should take note of the competition. It's foolish not to do so.
  • smoothn00dle #23 3 years ago

Forza should check out their own book first and the hardware they are on. GT5 would make them eat dust.. The next Forza requires two DVDs.. and GT5 only 1 bluray..

Talk about GT5, they are moving into handheld now.. but Forza still on console.. Who is staying behind who?
  • MKorkia #24 3 years ago

Little competiotion is always good, that's why I love that both Xbox 360 and PS3 exist.

Now instead of one bad console we have two good ones.

    /Will buy both Forza3 & GT5
  • davisorle #25 3 years ago

The dude stated the obvious by pointing out that ppl from the GT team were gathering info from Forza 3 for understandable reasons which puts them in the noob zone... Ppl that have been working SO many years on the GT franchise and have so little progress other than mostly visually ( which even that not done properly if you ask me cause GT turns out rather boring ans a bit of the same .. ), they go gather tips from another tittle is rather messed up. Some heads should fall, some should be fired and the ppl on the creative part of the team that are getting paid to ivolve the franchise should be replaced. Its THAT simple what he pointed out while interviewed.

Cause if you ask me, if i was working as a waitor and you picked ur coffee from the counter as a selfservice place why pay me for a waito and if im being paid to be an inventor and i steal your ideas then wtf am I being paid for. Point is, they were gathering info about Forza. They should stick with selling Prologues and epilogues of non existing games since Sony is known into saying shit they bring out like lots of years later and yet charge you a buttload of money thats not worth for it ( from software to hardware) and let the tards keep paying 20+$ for the demos.. lol They all make profit for a jjob they cant get well done. Simple shit right there if you ask me.
  • Spydy #26 3 years ago

    GT3 plays better than Forza3.
  • Collymilad #27 3 years ago

    lol classic

No-one cares. I mean the fact you are clutching at straws like 1 disc instead of 2 just proves how little the GT franchise actually has over Forza.

Davisrole, a simple shit right there if you ask me.

Xerx3s, I'm not sure "all publicity is good publicity" is a good way to look at it. After all if this was true everyone would love the PS3 with the amount it is talked about on this site alone. But Forza3 does look decent, downloaded the Forza2 demo on my newly purchased 360 last week and it seems to be a good racer though I prefer the handling in GT5P, mostly as I spent a lot of time on it and am familiar with it.
  • zabeu #29 3 years ago

Turn 10 may be a rather boastful lot, but all their trash-talking can't hold a candle to the arrogance of stating that you never look at other racing games (as quoth KY of PD, repeatedly).

That said, if GT5 is really ready for release (quoting KY), it's far too late to make any dramatic changes to a game of its size. Still, it's nice to know that PD is finally showing interest in the competition's game. And here's hoping that the ridiculously clunky and glacial menu system in GT will return to the fluidity of the series' first installment after reaching a new low in GT5P.

Now instead of one bad console we have two good ones.

WTF is that meant to mean?!
  • ruttyboy #31 3 years ago

People who can't enjoy both GT5 and F3 are cunts.

Now that's some simple shit to understand.
  • kiroquai #32 3 years ago

    *hugs his copy of rFactor*

Don't see the problem really - if they want to pinch ideas off each other then I don't care, as long as both games keep trying to leapfrog each other.

What a douche bag. Devs should not get tangled up in retarded platform propaganda.

    I'll be buying both ><

To the guy with the 2 DVDs vs 1 BluRay comment: WHO THE FUCK CARES?

  • Ghettomurph #38 3 years ago

lol! they should concentrate on making the game half decent, there engine can only handle like 3 cars on the track at once or something lame, gran turismo tech demo prolouge has 16 on screen at once running at 60fp.

    Turn LOL!

    @chris_ace

    You sir, are a bellend.
  • Rodchenko #39 3 years ago

Congrats on developing a great game, but I don't really care about how big your cock is and how nicely it shoots off underhanded comments in direction of other developers.

"Which could explain why the GT franchise has been so stagnant in the racing genre since GT3."

I really can't believe the idiocy of some games developers when talking to the press. Do they really have no idea?

I'm in no way a fan of Sony's PR fuckups, but this really rivals the best of them. Seldom have I seen such an ouright arrogant and derogatory comment of a competitor's game, right after Polyphony were clearly showing respect for Turn 10 in viewing their product and taking notes.

    I don't own a PS3, but I'm hoping GT5 kicks F3's arse because of this statement.
