Vin Diesel's Tigon Studios has said it sees upcoming Riddick title Assault on Dark Athena as an "episodic expansion", revealing that work on a true sequel to the 2004 Xbox classic is already underway.
Speaking to Eurogamer TV at the recent Atari Live event in London, Tigon head of production Ian Stevens said: "We've really tried to maintain that core experience [of the original] and embellish it for Assault on Dark Athena, which we see very much as an episodic expansion of Escape From Butcher Bay.
"We're not calling it a sequel; we've got a sequel in mind that's a couple of years out if you guys want it, and you like this and you tell us you want more."
Assault on Dark Athena is a new standalone adventure, and will release alongside an enhanced port of the Xbox original in the same package. Dark Athena, co-developed by Tigon and Swedish studio Starbreeze, clearly impressed at the Atari event, but Stevens insisted there were greater things to come.
"[The full sequel] is ambitious and that is definitely going to follow the precedent that we set with the first," he added. "But for now we've got a new story that we want to tell and a little bit of a single-player expansion on that original game."
The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is coming to PS3 and 360 next spring. You can see more on the game, and everything else on show at Atari Live, in the latest episode of The Eurogamer TV Show.

I asked this in the preview comments thread, but never got an answer, so I'll chuck it here (and closer to the top!):
-------- Can anyone confirm, is this going to be based on the Xbox version or the PC version (and I'm talking content-wise here, not technically)? The PC version was released as a "Director's Cut" and featured extra content - to quote from Wiki: "[the Windows] version also featured upgraded visuals, as well as an additional level with the player piloting a Riot Guard mechanized suit, along with three extra cigarette packs for the player to collect, making a total of 62 packs in the Windows version." I played this originally on the PC and thought it was amazing game. At Uni both myself and my housemate bought it at the same time and literally sat there for 2 days straight and played it through to completion on our own PC's! And I remember the mech stuff being particularly fun as well. Literally cannot wait for this to be released as I love the Riddick universe anyway, and the first game was fantastic, so the thought of this having more content is pretty cool. -------- Also, a true sequel as well? \o/ /runs off squealing with joy..... EDIT: Better layout. Oh, and FIRST! (my first first as well!)

CoR was easily one of the best games on the XBox, both in terms of technical ability and just in terms of straight off good quality gameplay (stupid monster maze not withstanding). Totally looking forward to the (not a) sequel.

This was one of the two games that I wanted an Xbox for, back in the day. When I got a 360 I was gutted that this and Oddworld Stranger's Wrath weren't backwards compatible!
Consequently, I'm really looking forward to this game. Roll on the release! (And please do a decent job of the PS3 version - free online play is so much nicer!) |

The guys from Starbeeze were on one of the recent 1up podcasts and confirmed that the new version contains all the content from the PC Director's Cut of the original game. They also said the visuals would be significantly improved over the PC version. Not usually one to double-dip, but since this game was so damn good the first time around and the "expansion" part has ended up about the same size as the original campaign I may well pick this up for 360 next year! |

I liked Riddick. It had ambition and delivered a solid game with excellent technology and some excellent moments while everybody was talking about Doom 3.
Darkness also looked good but had annoying loading times, no pacing, laggy controls, bad framerate and tentacles that got stuck everytime you killed someone and had to move around his body. So I guess I'd prefer new Riddick games |

Yes please! Especially as there's no way another movie will get made after 'Chronicles' did less than stellar business. Just dump the pretentious stuff about prophecies etc and get back to Riddick being an antihero bastard!
