Trine PC demo available now News

PC News by Robert Purchese

29 June, 2009

Frozenbyte has popped out a PC demo for promising platform game Trine.

The 461MB file can be downloaded from GamersHell or FileFront.

Trine, which is also in development for PSN and XBLA, is a side-scrolling physics-focused platformer. The twist comes when using three unique characters to solve puzzles and progress through levels.

The nimble thief Zoya can leap and grapple and shoot arrows, for example, while the sturdy knight Pontius is at his best pummelling baddies up close. Amadeus the wizard, on the other hand, can push, pull, levitate and conjure blocks.

So keen on Trine are we that we offered our in-depth hands-on impressions of Trine back in May, and will have a review very soon.

Finnish developer Frozenbyte (Shadowgrounds, Shadowgrounds Survivor) said the PSN version would be out in June, but time is ticking away. The official website only lists Q2 2009 as the date.

According to our review code, however, the PC version of the game is due out on 10th July.

25 squid?
Better not be that for PSN or that's a no sale for me.

Edit: Filefront download seems to be corrupt, no mouse cursor or picture on menu screen (only options, which makes it unplayable from there)

GamersHell worked with no problems installing.

Have played the demo 4 times through now.

The demo is also available on Steam, and you can pre-purchase it there for £19.99. Bit pricey for an indie game, but the demo was fun, so it may be worth it.

After playing the demo, it's a day one purchase for me. Utterly brilliant.

Like others, downloaded this on Steam. Beautiful looking game but will wait for the PSN release.

*** Had to play with keyboad and mouse as it would not recognise my gamepad. You know, the wired 360 one that is supposed to work in all PC games that support gamepads ***

On the PSN I would expect it be no more than £11.99 - isn't that what WipeOut sold for?

Not worth £25, £20 or even £17.99.

I'll pay no more than a penny less than twelve or they can get stuffed.

i downloaded this off steam last night as well. it is fun, and reminds me very much of lost vikings. however i do not believe i will be paying anything more than £12.99 for this, perhaps £14.99 if its a lengthy game with a ton of replay value. if you wait long enough on steam, it will probably end up being in a special offer where its price has been halved... This will fail terribly on the PS3 if it is not released at a £11.99 price point, even more so without a demo!!

@rhubarbandcustard

Did you go into settings and change it from keyboard and mouse -> gamepad?

I plyed this demo last night (with a wired 360 pad). Beautiful game. Insta-buy for me. In fact I did - bought the boxed copy of Game.co.uk for £17.99. Well worth it for that in my opinion.

Can't wait to play the full game now :)

Yeah I agree, I think they've priced this game way too high, although I don't know how long its going to be.

ZuluHero: Yes I tried the gamepad settings last night, and have just tried it again. Still with no joy. This is why I will be waiting for the PSN release. Bloody PC's... harrumph

Just played through the demo, it's pretty good. It runs really well on my ageing PC too, I've only got a x800 card and it looks lovely. I can imagine getting a bit bored with it after a while though, unless new ideas are present in the later levels.

Great, great demo. Not a fan of the fact that you need to start a level from the beginning when you quit it mid-level. I see no reason not to have a save at the checkpoints.

Works fine here. You need to change "pl 1" to "gamepad".

Anyway tried both, but preferred m/kb myself. I didn't like how the analogue stick has the defense function for the knight, but the attack of the thief, and vice versa with the button. Doing the "aggressive" moves with the LMB and the defensive ones all with the RMB seemed more natural to me. Jumping is a tad better with the pad, but not enough for me to make up for the slightly clumsy aiming mechanic and confusing buttons. But then I am notoriously cack-handed with pads, admittedly.

I don't know how I missed this one. I just finished the demo from Steam ten minutes ago and it both looks and plays fantastic.
Though I have a feeling this might very well be the type of game that will have my screaming in frustration and quitting less than half way through :), I'm definitely buying it no matter if it's going to be 10, 20 or 30 Euro - but I imagine I'll get the PSN version unless the PC version is released first.

Looks gorgeous but plays like a top 200 of platform game flaws. Blind jumps, randomly spawning enemies, spawn traps, unclear obstacles, long resets on failed jumps... the only things it's missing is a slippy slidey ice world and a reverse the controls power up.
