Tretton says Move is "an extension"

"Not a replacement."

Sony America boss Jack Tretton has described PlayStation Move as "an extension of what already exists, not a replacement".

"The key is choice for the consumer. We don't want to force motion gaming down their throat," Tretton told G4TV (thanks VG247) during last week's PlayStation Move unveiling.

"So for the shooter fan that says, 'You know, love what you do with motion gaming, but I like my DualShock experience,' that's going to be there for them.

"The great thing about this motion gaming is an add-on, an enhancement, an extension of what already exists, not a replacement."

PlayStation Move is due out this autumn and Sony has promised to support it with "more than 20" first party titles by next March, and said that 36 game companies are signed up making new titles that support it.

When asked about the controller's launch line-up, Tretton alluded again to more reveals at E3 in June and said he needed to "keep our powder dry" regarding specifics for the time being.

Yes, it certainly looks like an 'extension'.

Well hopefully the game programmers will take balance into account when designing multiplayer games then. IMHO there's a big difference between gamers using two different control methods.

'You know, love what you do with motion gaming, but I like my DualShock experience,'

More like "OMG WAGGLE SUCKS THEIRS NOTHING RONG WITH PADS Y R U CATERING 4 CASUALS AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!"

@patch: UT3 happily let you select between control schemes. I don't think there's really any way of leveling the playing field between control schemes other than segregation. Unless maybe different controllers were given different roles in team games or something.

PlayStation Move will become part of a new cut-down PS3 console - aimed purely at casual gamers - that will probably have a fair-sized HDD but no optical drive (no BluRay) and will follow the PSPgo sales model, with DLC content only.

It will be sold with the Move controller only and with all the savage cut-backs above, will thus be much cheaper than the 'full' PS3 and therefore, be able to compete with the Nintendo console and the future HD version.

It will probably be called PlayStation 3M.

Anyway, that's my prediction. You read it here first! :-)

I just know that I will play with Move yet occasionally be utterly humiliated by a dualshocker.

Without making it integral to gameplay will it really sell?

You can't get away from the Wii controller because you need it to play the games, and you can't get away from Singstar Mics because you need it to play the game, and you can't get away from plastic intruments because you need it to play the Guitar Heros/Rock Bands...

If the PS Move is completely "additional" and I can use my exisitng controller, why would I have it?

    That's nice to hear frankly.

    Good!

If Sony treat it like that - it may well be successfull

We all expect the 3rd party shovelware - but that can be ignored... WE ARE LOOKING AT YOU BRUNSWICK BOWLING!

and rightfully so, as long as Move isn't mandatory for all games that follow post release, they can maintain their player base rather than splitting.

lol Since the early sixaxis nonsense I doubt Sony would be that foolish anyhow.

Why aren't Nintendo suing, anyway? Are they too busy laughing?

If you could hold a Move controller AND a DS3 pad, then that would be the definition of "extension".

The fact that you can't means that Move must replace the DS3, for those games that use it at least.
