Transformers game developer, target platforms revealed

All the next-gens.

Activision has announced that Traveller's Tales is developing its upcoming Transformers game for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS2 and PC.

The game is also due out on PSP and DS, with those versions handled by Savage and Vicarious Visions respectively.

All are due out in the summer to coincide with the Paramount film that's set to premiere at the same time.

Details on actual game content are still scant, but we do know that you'll be able to play as either Autobots or Decepticons. Here's the rest of the publisher's description:

"Players must master each character’s unique weapons, moves and instantaneous transformations that allow them to effortlessly switch between vehicle and robot mode, as they rampage fully destructible environments smashing everything they encounter and using all objects as weapons along with firepower to obliterate enemies."

Traveller's Tales' most recent successes are the LEGO Star Wars games, both of which have won critical and commercial success by taking a witty and irreverent approach to the source material. We expect the Transformers game will be a bit more straight-faced.

It's actually got something to live up to, as well, since Atari Melbourne House, the last developer to have a stab at the series, did a remarkably good job on PlayStation 2. For more on that, check out our review.

Yep, it's an all day sale at the Cash-In-O-Rama.

Provided the game itself stays distant from the story and scenarios from the film, it could be OK.

Just make it a straight forward sequal to, the excellent, Transformers Armada, but release it to coincide with the film for added sales.

The last transformers game was surprisingly good I thought. Could have been better though, guess we'll see.
  • Kostabi #6 5 years ago

I'll buy it just for the sound effects.

Why all the sighs of woe? Travellers Tales have excellent track record - this could be a very diverting game.

    Hopfully this was a joke..

Giant robots blowing stuff up. I'm fairly sure you can't go wrong there ...

Travellers Tales have an alright record. The Lego Star Wars games are brilliant, but what else have they done of much quality?
  • zoidberg #11 5 years ago

how can they port it to PS3 AND PS2??
  • sharpfish #12 5 years ago

Please don't mess up the Transformers. Don't tie it in too much with the movie (unlikely to get that wish) and do concentrate on the UK comic story lines from 85-87. Those were the golden years.

However, I can't think of many devs more suited to handle the game than TT judging from the love they put into the Lego Star Wars stuff. Great games.

A transformers title not by Mellbourne is dubious enough, but also being movie tie-in means it's crappness is guaranteed.
Sure, TT have track record of making license games that aren't shit, but that was when they weren't tied down to a movie launch date.

Will this be as qual-e-t as the superman game that was released last year ?
  • Royal Fool #15 5 years ago

Am I the only one that didn't think very much of Lego Star Wars 2? I though it was rather crap as a game, not because of the Lego characters (I love Lego) but the controls, camera, gameplay and presentation were all terrible. IMO.

I realize I'll get loads of backlash for this comment.
  • BlitzwingHaz #16 5 years ago

I'm not expecting this to be as good as the previous PS2 game (which was great imo), but I reckon it may turn out OK.
Um, another site has some info, is linking to them against the rules?

Please note that developing for PS3 is nearly impossible. Just ask penhalion :)

I loved the first game, apart from the bastard hard difficulty level when you went back to replay any of the earlier levels, but I have high-hopes for this. If they can stick to the 1st games type of gameplay but with more characters I can't see how they can go wrong. My only gripe is that it isn't the same developer and that hopefully the new one won't want to make it "their own" too much.

    Not expecting much.

ah, x-platform; the death of gaming
  • Blerk #22 5 years ago

Tut. I thought we all loved TT these days? Poor guys, you could at least cut 'em some slack until you've actually seen the game.

Melbourne House's Transformers game was excellent - one of the best shooters I've played on the PS2 and one of very few games that has made me want to return to earlier levels to pick up every last collectible.

If this game manages to improve on that (e.g. by giving a wider choice of autobots / decepticons to play and perhaps a bit more variety in terms of the level environments) it'll be a must buy. Unfortunately (and no disrespect to Travellers Tales), the developer change doesn't really inspire me with confidence, but like the first game (which before I played the demo, I thought would be bobbins too) I'm open to persuasion.
  • spongebob #24 5 years ago

I wonder why they ditched the dev of that PS2 Transformers game? Maybe Traveller's Tale has a better trackrecord in doing multi-platform titles?
  • dudefella #25 5 years ago

The transformers game by Melbourne was rather crap, IMO. Boring level design and I couldn't for the life of me fly from the top of the island to the frigate!
  • RFT #26 5 years ago

That's because you were holding down the button that made your wings deploy.

Once the wings deploy, that button becomes "airbrake" so you need to tap it and release it to fly any distance.

this design error comes up every time i've seen a thread on that game.

Depends upon which of the TT teams works on it i guess. You get the Lego Star Wars team and there's potential. You get the Narnia team and...
