Too Human demo on Live now

Play the entire first level.

The Too Human demo is now available from Xbox Live.

It offers the entire first level (about 1GB) of the vikings-in-space adventure for you to wade through, where you can batter waves of goblin robots with big mallets.

The demo should also give you your first taste of the Norse pantomime plot, where you, as Odin's son Baldur, refuse to give your humanity to the machines, and get caught in love triangles and soap opera bickering along the way.

Too Human is an action role-playing game from Silicon Knights. It features online co-operative play, plus menus upon menus of equipment tweaking to do - some of the names given to the randomly generated loot are wonderful.

Tom had a chance to bash his way through it recently. Pop over to his hands-on impressions of Too Human to see what he thought.

Too Human is due out on 29th August, exclusively on Xbox 360.

The press release is confusing, because it says 2am PDT (6pm GMT), but 2am PDT is 10am here. And 6pm GMT would be 7pm local time because of Daylight Savings. :p
  • Quint2020 #2 4 years ago

    Yay!

All the features of this should be right up my ally but the previews have been, shall we say less than encouraging so it will be nice to give it a go myself.
  • Bertie Verified Senior Staff Writer, Eurogamer.net #3 4 years ago

It certainly is confusing. Still, 6pm UK sounds more likely than 2am PDT!

The MS conference is tonight at 6.30 UK so around then makes sense.

This is the most exiting demo to date imo. I just dont know how the game is and looking forward to make my own opinion.
A whole level sounds very promising too. Should be enough to consider to buy or not to buy.
  • des #6 4 years ago

Hmm 19 min to go if 2am PDT is correct...
  • Dizzy #7 4 years ago

    Woot! Looking forward to this.
  • TheJuriel #8 4 years ago

Gameplay videos haven't looked that exciting, but I'm curious how it feels in actual play, so I'll check it out.
  • Darren #9 4 years ago

@TheJurial - The gameplay videos make the game look boring especially the bland level design which looks like they were wrtten with the original Xbox in mind. Nice that there's a demo though because this is one game that I certainly wouldn't have bought without playing it first. I don't think it'll be awful but I don't think it'll be amazing either. My gut instinct tells me this will be the 360's Haze...
  • Crovax20 #10 4 years ago

Tom already murdered it in his preview imho.
I'll give it a try anyhow
  • andywilkie35 #11 4 years ago

god i hope this isn't shit! i haven't been too impressed with the vids so will be good to play and see

While I don't wish to keep flogging a dead horse, loss of four player co-op and no support for local co-op really put a nail in my interest over this. I'd always seen the game as one of those 'wade your way through 101 enemies, performing the same limited set of moves over and over again' types from the start, but I can forgive and even enjoy that style of play when I have a friend or three alongside me for the frantic carnage. When its just me however, I can't see it holding my interest at all...

Still, I'm a sucker for Norse mythology, and who knows - it might polish up in its final couple of weeks to hold at a passable 6 to 7 out of 10 that'll be worth a play once it drops in price a little.

I'll certainly give the demo a go anyway - not like I've got anything to loose with that!
  • 3william56 #14 4 years ago

Let's play... predict the EG review strapline.

    I'm guessing:
    "Too Little, Too Late?"
    or
"Looking a gift Norse in the mouth"

  • Quint2020 #15 4 years ago

"NeoGaf = owned, game is good."

    Nick have you played it?
  • Dizzy #16 4 years ago

    >NeoGaf = owned, game is good.

NeoGAF are a bunch of emo morons.

Anyway... I hope it will be good... I could do with a Diablo game :) while I wait for Diablo 3.

    >Nick have you played it?

Obviously since it is online NOW.

@Nick_JC1 - thanks for your input, but if it's all the same to you I'll continue to state my thoughts on things without running them past you first. For what it's worth, I wasn't 'giving my review score' - if I was, if I'd made my mind up on it already, I wouldn't even bother to download the demo and play it now, would I?

Thank fuck this place comes with an ignore poster function.

    'tool' etc

Emo much? I rest my case. Owned!
  • penhalion #21 4 years ago

Wow a developer that puts their nads where the chopping board is and dares anyone to have a wack! For the steel nads alone, I hope this game lives up to my expectations.
  • McBradders #22 4 years ago

Eurogamers reading comprehension is still low level I see. Well, as someone else said, the ignore poster function here works wonders.
  • Quint2020 #23 4 years ago

I've just been reading the NeoGAf thread, wow they really are a bunch of whiney gits aren't they?
  • koji_m #24 4 years ago

    hmmm

    oO

so all the whining in the previews really had a reason..., I`ld love to like this game tho, shame

Come on people! Someone post about what it plays like! It's been 80 minutes already!
  • koji_m #27 4 years ago

    @ dr_faulk

well the cutscenes are a mess, the grafics have a strange way of looking bland while the engine isn`t too bad, hard to make up character models/ NPC`s etc

combatwise you get this WTH is going on feel (might improve when you invest some time into it tho) and yes, the camera is all over the place

it`s not like it`s superbad (heck I`ve been playing KUF: circle of doom the last couple of weeks, now that`s BAD), it`s just disappointing to see this game turn out like this

ah, and Dyack is gonna get lynched on GAF

Anyway. 6 hours till I try it. Please be good, please be good, please be good...
  • Quint2020 #32 4 years ago

I genuinely believe it's going to be awful, hope it's not though, still if it is Sacred 2 is out in November and that will hopefuly cure my Diablo itch.
  • dr_faulk #33 4 years ago

    @ koji_m

Thanks, dude! Your impressions kinda match my gut feeling about the game. Still, I'll try it tonight.
  • klem578 #34 4 years ago

Ok, i'll try to be as objective as possible here :

Lads, this has to be one one the most dissapointing games ever.I'm all for gameplay> graphics but the whole look of the game is extremely dissapointing - considering it's been in production for this long.
The framerate is all over the place (especially in cutscenes) and it features some of the worst looking character models ever-ever i tell you- i'm not exaggerating when i say that they're Gamecube quality (geometry and detail -wise).

What's also striking is the horrendous animation guys, yes, it's as bad as you've seen in videos, frankly, it's so bad to the point that can (almost) make you laugh - try to juggle an enemy in the air with a melee weapon and immediately shoot your guns while descending - it's some of the worst animation i've ever witnessed, you'll understand when you'll see it...

The whole game really feels like it was put up by an amateur develepment studio, it feels so...amateur-ish !

The music on the other hand is absolutely beautiful and epic, quality stuff guys i tell you.

Now for the gameplay : I think it's going to be a love-hate situation, for me it's pretty neat and it works.
The whole analog stick thing works as expected (mostly) and it can be pretty fun chopping/shooting/juggling enemies.
Enemies swarm you all the time and the game gives a proper feel of "urgency" when surrounded by them - something that's going to be/feel even better when playing with a buddy on co-op.

I can understand though why they've dropped the 4 player co-op, the whole game engine would've imploded,it's not that it's so bad, but you can clearly see the engine struggling when there are more than 10-15 enemies on screen - imagine it now playing it with 3 other guys over the internet...so,yeah, "2 player co -op feels better" my ass mr Dennis...

The camera it's pretty bad but i've wouldn't be the most objective person to describe it since i play Ninja Gaiden 2 and i am used to" bad" cameras,so...

I don't know, i even found KUF:circle of Doom to be somewhat fun, but this (too human)...

Maybe the final product will be better, what can i say? (highly unlikely though)...
  • muscleblade #35 4 years ago

    @klem578

Wow! Looks like this is going to be MS answer to Haze. Cant wait to give it a go tonight though.
  • brockenheimer #36 4 years ago

Nick_JC1, I hope you will come back here and hold your hands up if this doesn't get over 85 on metacritic. That sounds extremely hopeful to me...
  • klem578 #37 4 years ago

@muscleblade : mate, jokes aside, it's pretty disappointing seeing great dev.studios like Free radical and Silicon knights producing "bad" products like these, you know?

Silicon knights is renowned for their story telling and it might be the same thing with too human, thing is, you also have to have something that looks good (post- 2005 graphics) and plays well...

  • christourlord #38 4 years ago

I'm surprised how much attention this game is still getting.

It was always obviously going to be mediocre at best. Just let it fall by the wayside, where it belongs.
  • muscleblade #39 4 years ago

    @klem578

I agree. Silicon Knights and Free radical are actually among my favourite developers. I actually got very sad when they announced that Haze would be PS3 exclusive as i had sold my PS3 just prior to the announcement. And Eternal Darkness is one of my all time favourites.
  • muscleblade #40 4 years ago

"I'm surprised how much attention this game is still getting. "

christourlord has never played Eternal Darkness i presume.

  • christourlord #41 4 years ago

@muscleblade: Yes, I did. Great game.

This has always looked dodgy though. I don't care what games the developer has previously worked on.
  • Darren #42 4 years ago

@muscleblade - Having completed Haze, I can assure you that you have absolutely nothing to be upset about, it was a competent but completely unexceptional game in every way. In fact, it was so utterly ordinary that I'm struggling to even remember it to be honest; it's so forgettable.
  • muscleblade #43 4 years ago

    @Darren

After the negative reviews i knew i wasnt missing out. MGS4 is the only game on the PS3 that might interest me but i hate overly long cutscenes so i dont think i am missing out not owning a PS3 regarding that game either.
  • klem578 #44 4 years ago

@insane_cobra : Everything i posted was (of course) my personal opinion, i can't talk for everybody.
There are going to be people that are going to like it and people that don't.

For me , it looks worse than KUF: circle of Doom for example (much worse) and and it also plays more iffy,so...

To each their own of course...
  • Darren #45 4 years ago

@muscleblade - MGS4 was awesome: one of , if not THE best games of this year IMO and I'm saying that as someone who didn't particularly find MGS2 or MGS3 all that amazing. Yeah, there are a lot of cutscenes but they're very well done and the whole game is just a joy to play from start to finish. Then you'll want to play through it again 'cos it's that good! :)
  • muscleblade #46 4 years ago

    @Darren

I generally like your very unbiased and fair comments. So i might borrow it from my nabour if i find the time to play it. Im going to miss achievements adding to my gamerscore when playing since i become so used to gettig them by now. Still one should never decide to play a game or not because of achievements thats just ridiculous imo.
  • Oldern #47 4 years ago

    I really love self-pwnage.

"Ok, i'll try to be as objective as possible here :

Lads, this has to be one one the most dissapointing games ever"

What is wrong with these two sentences? ;)
And to the demo: i really am impressed, and want to know the list of the games you all play, if you say that THIS is the most disappointing game ever.

Come on, say the names, which are, like infinitely better than this.
  • koji_m #48 4 years ago

    @ Oldern

did you just say that you were really impressed?

it isn't complete poo like some people would like you to believe, but impressed, isn't that a bit much?

all in all it was just a very underwhelming experience for me... I'll give it a go again tonight, I might start to like it, but it's not the awesome AAA stuff we were promised
    Edited by 1 at 14/07/08 @ 14:12
  • klem578 #49 4 years ago

Oldern, duder, if you read the next post you would've noticed the "it's my personal opinion" quote,so,yeah...
Also, when trying to be objective ,someone has to see the good as well as the bad parts.
A not "objective" view would be to say "I PLAYED IT,IT SUCKS !".

Yes,judging by the demo (personal opinion) the future doesn't bode well for too human (personal opinion).
Yes, for something as hyped as this, the negative parts are going to be more evident (personal opinion).
Yes, for a game that is sooo long in development, it looks and plays extremely mediocre (personal opinion).
Yes, for a game that is developed by Silicon Knights it feels like a complete rush and amateur-ish job (personal opinion).

    Personal opin...wait...

I'm Sorry if you really are impressed by this game...

Then again, there are people that find games like MGS4 shit,so...

Can we not express our opinions any more? Can we not "tell it like it is"?

    Jesus tittie fecking Christ...

  • TripSkyway #50 4 years ago

Really enjoyed the demo, high hopes for the full game now.
  • NegativeZero #51 4 years ago

I enjoyed the demo quite a bit. The game is far from perfect, especially graphically. There are other games that look better and there are better animated games. But it was never going to be a Gears of War 2 or something. What's present of the plot is really interesting and the setting is fascinating. The environments seem to be pretty enough to make up for what the cutscenes may lack a bit (and despite what's been said earlier, the model geometry is far more detailed than the Gamecube could put out, especially in terms of texturing - the wierd feel that things have is because of the animation and the lighting, not the geometry). The gameplay itself is reasonably fun, and the speed of progression and the rate at which you gather interesting loot and the like is about right. The controls are a little clunky at first, since the signals it gives are to play it like Devil May Cry or the like, but it's a very different game to that and trying to do that will just get you frustrated. A bit like trying to play Mass Effect as a straight-up shooter. As a demo it's reasonably good too, just enough to pique my interest.

No one's mentioned the fact that it manages to jump around entire scenes, doing in-game cutscenes and the like in completely different areas to the spot you're in without ever showing you a loading screen and with barely a pause between them. That's a reasonably impressive technical achievement that requires a heck of a lot of careful work.

Overall it's not as good as I had been hoping, but it's far better than I had been expecting given the utterly juvenile negativity cloud that surrounds the game. I suspect it's going to bomb though, since it really does seem to be the trendy thing to hate it and not give it a chance because some people on some message boards don't like it.

Looking forward to trying it in co-op. I think it'll really shine there.
  • muscleblade #52 4 years ago

Now im really confused. Must get home from work soon to try it for myself.
  • alimokrane #53 4 years ago

grrrrr ... the impressions are such a mixed bag ..... this isnt making it easier! I cant wait to get home tonight and try it for myself.
  • slivir #54 4 years ago

Demo was fun (if a bit too complicated). I was quite surprised by it actually after all the negative criticism. They obviously poured loads of effort into the story and presentation. I couldn't get my head around the combat, equipment, skills etc but it wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. Looking forward to the coop aspect too.

  • Dizzy #55 4 years ago

"Can we not express our opinions any more? Can we not "tell it like it is"? "

Yes you can.. but your opinion was a bit over the top dude.

"most disappointing games ever"???? Seriously.... there are probably 1000s of games that are worse than this. Hyperboles do not go well together with "objective opinions", then you probably nudge closer to the Fanboy Zone ;)

Anyway.. I think you just used the wrong words ;)

  • paulf #56 4 years ago

mmm first impression from the demo

too many cutscenes - let me get into the action
poor graphics, looks more like a xbox game than a 360 one
actual combat is quite good fun but is spoilt by the stop start nature

overall the demo didnt offer enough for me to buy the full game
  • riz23 #57 4 years ago

So this is an interesting one. I was keen to play the demo and I would reckon this: Not as graphically attractive as you might expect, in fact a bit fugly. Combat has some depth and is reminiscent of DMC most of all imho. I was fairly non-plussed until I started collecting loot and opening up the skill tree. That is where this game has its attraction. The comparison to diablo is spot on in this regard. Lots of loot, lots of weapon and armour slots and perhaps lots of killing opportunities as you go along. However the menus for these are nasty and confusing. Not elegant or pretty at all. The story does seem interesting but overall this game is not going to live up to the hype. In fact it will probably be slated by many. However it will also be enjoyed by some. It'll flatten out at a 70-75 metacritic, but expect to see a few 5 or 6 outta 10's appear. Maybe even on this esteemed site? If you like collecting lots of shit and hammering combos then buy this game (preferably at a discount).
  • Oldern #58 4 years ago

    Klem578:

Yes, i was really impressed with some of the things of Too Human. Mainly, it was these things:

    - The Atmosphere. The music, the ambient sounds, the soldiers talking, the lighting and the background of the place where we are created a great atmosphere which is pretty rare. Not the good atmosphere which is rare, but this kind of setting.

    - The gameplay. At first, it seemed odd, not very accurate, and of course hindered by slowdowns. However, the unique items, the good and always present combination of shooting and meleeing are a good experience for me, who played Diablo 2 for many years.

So basically yes, these features makes Too Human a really unique game. I just do not see the game which has the same setting AND does everything better than Too Human.

Besides: we did not see all. Just a demo is not enough to fully judge: replay value, the good co-op or bad co-op can make all the difference. Does not feel like "most disappointing game ever" - even if it was in production for such a long time.
  • Mudo #59 4 years ago

Downloaded the demo. The dungeon stuff was quite good, but the horrendous flashbacks and cutscenes and characters are best left forgotten...
Camera really annoyed me though, but it was good you could change it as in a racing game. I mostly played on 'Iso'.
    Aiming also fairly faulty.
  • benstarkie #60 4 years ago

Excuse my refusal to wade through all this erm....chuff but does the demo feature online co-op?
  • penhalion #61 4 years ago

Game plays well once you get used to the controls. The graphics are fine and not really any worse than 90% of the games out there (clearly some people are playing on standard def TV if they are complaining about the graphics). I did find that the skill tree graphics and descriptions looked unfinished. Mainly due to the blue icons that quite frankly looked like programmer art. The equipment descriptions also didn't seem to tell you what type of gun you equipped i.e does it fire continuous beam or single shots etc. etc. Example of this is near the end of the demo, where I equipped a gin that fired a beam but, also had a grenade launcher effect which I found totally by accident! Looked at the description and there is zero mention of this function anywhere.
  • Niall #62 4 years ago

Loved it, looking forward to the release. My only real problem was the camera, but thats just a habit kind of thing which will be overcome by time spent playing the game - It felt odd to not control camera movement with the right stick, Id keep swinging my sword everytime i wanted to bring it round a corner with me. As I said though, just a habit of mine, not a technological failure.

Equipment and skill evolution seems quite deep and involved, without being overly complicated.
Combat is enjoyable, easy to get hold of, but more nuanced than it first appears and it feels like it will be satisfying to master it.
Music and sound was exceptional, really goes a long way to developing the kind of atmosphere I wanted out of the game
Graphics while not as stunning as some of the more recent graphical tour de forces we have had as of late, are very well done. I like the look and feel of the environments, and while the character models arn't as detailed as others, they look good and work within the context of the environment.

Suitably epic so far, hopefully the rest of the game will live upto the impressive standard set out here

Not played it yet but I'm thinking a good solid patching could do this game wonders from what I've read.

If it sorted out the frame rate, made some small camera fixes and tidied up the menus/descriptions would that improve peoples opinions of it??

Lets hope all those c*nts haven't pissed of SK so much that they don't bother patching it and take the view that they should just cut their losses.
  • The-Bodybuilder #64 4 years ago

    Hmmmmm, I'm confused.
I was expecting this to be bad, real bad, lair bad, but it isn't.
Graphics aren't half-bad. Not great, but not as bad as it looks on videos. Animation is pretty crappy, along with camera, but it's not that bad. I'm actually enjoying it.

    I'm confused.
  • Rirekon #65 4 years ago

    Too. Many. Cutscenes.
  • paulf #66 4 years ago

@penhalion - I'm playing it on a nice hi-def tele and it does look bad - not awful but not really good enough to be this gen,

like i said before it looks like a good xbox game, the animations are poor as well and the targeting is annoying (is there a lock on? if so i couldnt find it)

saying all that i did play through the whole demo - still not buying it though - on first impressions hellgate is better than this and look what happened there ...
  • Asundai #67 4 years ago

Hmm. I like the music. Story could be interesting. Graphics are perfectly acceptable (they aren't technically amazing but they're hardly at last gen standards like some muppets are claiming, and i like the art direction). Gameplay seems a little shallow but passable and i can see the loot collecting becoming addicting (a game with good item visuals for once!). Camera and weapon aiming were fairly poor but ah well, at least you can manually centre the camera, and it seems like it's all about the melee combat really.

Not the greatest game ever but based on the demo i think i'll buy this one (maybe wait to get it cheap though). As far as action-RPGs go it's no Diablo 3 but it certainly seems better than recent offerings (Hellgate London).

paulf: If you seriously think it looks like an xbox game then go grab some screenshots of whichever game it is you think is comparable, because i don't see it.

as regards crap graphics, graphics are comparable to halo 3. you cannot expect mass effect quality with the amount of enemies they want on screen plus the absence of load times must have something to do with it. Some people are far too stroppy with this game. That said I'm still not convinced I want to buy it, its definately not a must buy.
  • spandexlazaruz #69 4 years ago

Am I missing something here, D/L'd the game and I can't get past the start screen, just keeps replaying the same cutscene. Tried pressing everything and none of it works. Any ideas???

  • Darren #70 4 years ago

Woooo, there was me expecting to really dislike this game; after all the gameplay videos failed to impress me... but, no, I actually enjoyed this game to my complete surprise. So much so that I spent nearly an hour on it without realising. That'll teach me never to pre-judge a game on selected videos. Ahem.

Anyway, it's not perfect but it's good enough to have me intrigued about the full game. Granted, I had little clue what the story was about or exactly what I was doing but it was kind of fun in the way that Marvel Ultimate Alliance was. I'm still a bit undecided about the controls; using the right analogue stick for the sword feels a little clunky and unresponsive and your character doesn't exactly move very fast, adding slightly to the sluggish feel. The camera is also a bit problematic, constantly trying to focus on where you have to go or giving you cinematic views such that it feels wayward. You can press LB to centre it but it never feels totally comfortable, sometimes resorting to fixed views or switching them entirely, momentarily confusing me. Reminds me alot of Silicon Knight's previous game, Eternal Darkness, in that respect.

Artistically it reminds me a lot of Mass Effect and the game engine manages to run well bar a slightly juddery framerate (still I'd rather that than tearing). Faces don't always look convincing, suffering from rather stiff lip-synching and odd-looking unemotional eyes. Nice texturing and self-shadowing though and some lovely use of depth of field effects. I doubt the UE3 would have ran it any better in retrospect and we'd probably be suffering from texture pop in issues and tearing too (see Mass Effect). Didn't notice any loading times at all during play which was impressive and the music was really nice and epic sounding, suiting the game to a tee. Sound-effects were OK - the explosions were annoying though, being far too loud - and the voice-acting was fine.

I'm definitely interested in the full game now. The ability to upgrade your character kind of adds to the game's appeal and I want to experience the story and play around with the upgrade system more. Although the game is a little rough around the edges, it's by no means as awful as expected. Quite a surprise really, nay, shock.
  • andywilkie35 #71 4 years ago

Thought it was sub-standard. Halo has better graphics and I thought that was ok (saved by all the lighting and effects).

This has low production values and no soul. Not the kind of game I'd ever want to play.

Can see its appeal to a few who might like to hack and slash a little. Hmm.

    @JSPOOLE

"I realise bodybuilders aren't usually the most intelligent chaps, but hope that helped a bit. "

What a moronic thing to write. Its actually proven that improved muscle capacity equals better brain function.

Anyway: I liked the demo in some ways but im afraid it didnt ever challenge me to a degree to make it exiting so i was pretty bored by the end of the demo. I love coop so i might still buy it. I actually hope that the rumours of this being a very short game is true so i can romp thru it in a couple of days with a friend.
