Tomb Raider Anniversary demo

Peru's at your leisure.

Lock up your wolves, bears and dinosaurs, Peruvians! Lara's on the loose again, and this time she's using the Tomb Raider: Legend engine so she doesn't fall off ledges all the time. You can see how things are shaping up in the newly released Tomb Raider Anniversary demo.

Don't worry about it being one of those ropey PC ports of a PS2 game, either - our full version was very accommodating, immediately spotting our Xbox 360 USB controller and mapping all the buttons correctly, offering widescreen resolutions, and loading faster than it usually takes PCs to "thumbnail" our obliquely-named Desktop folders full of movie files.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary - originally conceived as the 10th anniversary edition - is a remake of the original game that uses an updated Tomb Raider: Legend engine. As well as all the ledge-hanging, rope-swinging and block-pushing of Legend, remade Lara can also shimmy up pillars, Prince of Persia-style, and perch on top of them, er, Sly Raccoon-style.

Sadly Legend's back-up team - Zip and Alister - won't be around to provide headset banter as Lara crawls through abandoned temples looking for cogs and fighting raptors, but you can expect to make contact with a few of her old friends like Jacqueline Natla and Larson as she tries to lay hands on the ancient Atlantean Scion, piece by piece.

And if you're curious to see what we make of it, why not read through our recent first impressions while the demo downloads? You can look out for our review of Anniversary later this week, with the full game due on PC and PS2 on 1st June. Do you feel stronger now? We hope so.

Played the demo over the week end and I must say the atmosphere of the original is brilliantly captured and honestly even though the game doesnt look on par with the 360 games, I must say all the additional effects they added and the reworked textures and he depth of field make it look no less than gorgeous! Cant wait for the PS2 version on 1st june!

Hmmm, I'm thinking of possibly getting the PS2 version after seeing some of the latest screenshots - Should look very nice on the PS3.

    "Peru's at your leisure."

Ugh! That was like being punched in the belly. :D

After seeing the improvement PS3 made to God of War II, was going to get the PS2 version of this. But I'm a cheap bastard so went for the PC version from Play.

Glad I did now, runs beautifully on my laptop at full everything. Something to play while the missus hogs the tv :)

"Sadly Legend's back-up team - Zip and Alister - won't be around to provide headset banter as Lara crawls through abandoned temples looking for cogs and fighting raptors"

    Or

"Thankfully Legend's spoonfeeding irritants - bla and whoever - won't be around to totally ruin any sense of mystery and atmospheric isolation as Lara crawls through abandoned temples looking for cogs and fighting raptors"

Thank God they've sorted it for TRA.

Any thoughts on why this isn't on Steam, given Eidos's big push to it recently?

We know Steam can do demos, and Tomb Raider Legends is on there...

I just hope we are spared static save crystals this time. I'm all for respecting the original material, but they were a pain in le rump.

Is Lara's aim improved in this? She couldn't hit a barn door with a brick in Legend.

This is officially the best strap pun in the history of time.

Tried the demo, good fun. The combat is still awful, but thankfully nowhere near as frequent as in Legends.

    GamesTM gave this a 6/10.

Their biggest gripe with the game?

Not knowing what to do or where to go next or how to reach a certain point in the game.

All of the above were was what made Tomb Raider so special to me in the first place. The feeling of total isolation, not knowing where to go, how to reach or climb to a certain point.

Apart from that they loved it saying it was a very faitful update which leaves me a little perplexed with the 6/10.

why I believe TR:A will be better than TR:L

TR = Raptors, Trex, Gorillas, Bears, Zombies, lions, Crocs, bats and skateboard punks with Uzis

TR:L = guys with guns, think some jaguars. thats about it.

as shallow as it seems, I loved the assortment of enemies in the original, while TR:L had a fairly dull selection, hope anniversary brings them all back
