TNA Impact gets downloadable wrestlers News

PlayStation 2 Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Tom Bramwell

16 June, 2008

TNA Impact! (or "TNA iMPACT!" if you like that sort of thing) will offer downloadable content after its launch September.

Speaking to Eurogamer at a press event in London today, Canadian TNA wrestler Petey Williams said that this would also include downloadable wrestlers.

TNA Impact, developed by Midway's LA studio, is positioned as a fast-paced alternative to games like WWE SmackDown from THQ.

Indeed, when we spoke to pro wrestler Kurt Angle earlier this year, he claimed it was going to be "the biggest hit of any videogame ever", which is probably wrong but it's a nice alternative to "we don't see them as a competitor" blah blah grow a spine.

Look out for more from Petey Williams, and his wrestling chums Samoa Joe and AJ Styles, in an upcoming preview.

The full game's due out on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and PS2 this September.

No sign of Robert Roode on the announced roster, yet, so he might be one of them.

I think with the ability to do downloadable content, wrestling games need marketed differently now.

Instead of being made yearly, they should be made every 2 or 3 years. And in the meantime, they do paid downloadable content that specifically adds features into the current product until you have a very complete final product, leaving it then up to people whether they want to buy the new game or just stick with the older one for a while. I think it would be as profitable as the annual game system if done right.

While this would seem like an obviously good and sensible use of DLC unfortunately it's unlikely that we'll see it implemented in this way anytime soon.

You see people are stupid and buy the same game at full price year on year, there is no need or indeed financial gain for a developer not to release incrementally different titles year on year.

It's the same with all sports franchises, Fifa, Pro Ev, Madden et al could obviously just be updated in a similar fashion to provide greter value for money for the consumer.
It would also enable the team to work on a more innovative base porduct to be realeased once every 3 years.

Sadly it won't happen.

I think the general consumer is so stupid that you could get away with considerably upping downloadable content AND continuing yearly releases for these sort of titles.

I honestly doubt high amounts of downloadable content across the lifespan of one of these titles would harm the yearly releases to the extent that it wouldn't be worthwhile for them to do.

Basically, I think, keep doing what they are doing every year, increase downloadables - make EVEN more money.
