TimeSplitters 4 confirmed

Again. On FRD's website.

Free Radical has super-duper-double-confirmed that TimeSplitters 4 is in development through a post on its (currently borked) website.

"It's back!" the announcement post began. "Featuring even more crazy characters, devastating weapons and heart pounding hot sweaty action. It's funny, it's frantic and it'll do things you've never seen before! No, not naked girls, even better than that!

"We can't tell you the details yet, the monkeys have a loaded banana pressed against our skull, but this game will take the first person shooter to gaming nirvana. Save the world or die laughing, Timesplitters 4 is coming to getcha!"

It's not the first we've heard of TS4, of course - Haze screen-writer Rob Yescombe has mentioned it previously, while big boss Dave Doak said just the other day that he hoped the game would appear on Wii.

Other platform and release date details are still to be confirmed, although we obviously suspect PS3/360/Wii, and Doak's comments suggest we won't be hearing much more for a while yet because development is still quite preliminary.

Please be on PS360 and not just Wii.

But yeah, this is great news - hopefully it will live up to the gaming nirvana which was TS2.
  • thejeek #3 4 years ago

Yeah - here's hoping this will be on 360 seeing as I sold my Wii and I desperately need a monkey assistant.

Actually I'd rather it go on Wii than PS360. We need a change from the norm in the world of FPS, and Timesplitters' graphical style fits just fine on the Wii. Please don't make it another generic FPS by putting it on the boring tired consoles Free Radical.

TS2 is my favorite FPS. But then again, I'm not a big fan of the genre.

as long as there is plenty of monkeys, ill be satisfied

What I didn't like in TS2 were the controls and the seeming low impact of the weapons (somehow it didn't feel good when you fired a weapon, even if it did normal damage).

I bet they can get great controls on the Wii.

    @bdc

    what the balls?

I'd much prefer to see bigger environments, more enemies on screen and thanks to the standard HDD a better less limited map maker and a VERY high possibility of online co-op.

On the wii it'll essentially be TS3 with Metroid Prime controls, not entirely a bad thing but I want what I just stated above.

How the hell does putting it on the PS3/Xbox 360 make it generic and not so on the Wii?

Of course doesn't make it generic by default, though PS3 and 360 have yet to prove they can do 'non-generic' stuff...

I would agree with you where it not that the controls would end up inaccurate and just turns 'press A' into 'waggle your controller up'.

Better online support + Better graphics + Better controls > innovation that doesn't work. Zeropunctuation on the escapist put it nicely I believe.

At least those generic games are fun?

If TimeSplitters 4 is going to be across all 3 formats, at least split the development team/time for each version; PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for one and the Wii for another.

If any developer can show the world that a FPS can be done on the Wii in style, it's Free Radical.

Umm how do you do a timesplitters game when at the end of the 3rd one they never existed in the first place?
  • Steroyd #15 4 years ago

You do know that when messing with the time paradox, not everything is so clear cut.
  • Lov3 #16 4 years ago

Man, this could be fun on the wii, the style of the game would really suit a more frantic control system.
  • Triggerhappytel #17 4 years ago

Maybe they'll go the Terminator 3 route of the Splitters were inevitable...

Anyway, the story's never really mattered too much, so I'm not to fussed about how the Splitters come back.

    /Hates Terminator 3.

Not to mention TS3 was the first to have a coherant "storyline" which was odd, because I just liked the inexplicable jumping into different timezones thing in TS2 as it was.

And this is were it will trip up i think. the quirky characters thing is getting stale.
  • thejeek #20 4 years ago

I dunno, I'm still looking forward to the daft characters, monkeys and all.

If it has decent split-screen multiplayer, loads of zombies, aliens, silly unlockable characters, game modes, weapons, and MONKEYS, then all will be as intended. Story is irrelevant, I won't mind if there is one but it won't keep me awake at night if there isn't.
  • Triggerhappytel #21 4 years ago

If there's still going to be jumping around random time periods (of course we will be!) we need a) pirates and b) dinosaurs.

    You reading this, FRD? Piratesanddinosaurspleaseandthankyou.

    //takes deep breath.

That totally ruined Future Perfect for me. :o\
  • Rodriguez #23 4 years ago

Brilliant news! I hope they continue to allow you to play against bots in multi-player as it's always a good laugh with some friends round, oh and co-op through the story mode [if it still has a story mode??]! Finally, I hope they bring back the 'haunted mansion' level from the first game with some hi-def gloss!!

I'll echo the other comments. Great character design sold me on this series since TS2, and I had great fun with Future Perfect's single-player. Retain the humor, expand the map maker, and keep bots aboard, and I'm sold.
