Time Crisis 4 Review

PlayStation 3 Review by Kristan Reed

14 April, 2008

Page 1 of 2. Page 2 ->

Undoubtedly one of the campest on-rails shooter series ever made, it's impossible to take Time Crisis seriously. But then it's impossible to take a lot of things seriously: insurance salesmen, for example, or people who wear hats indoors. So we still hoped that Namco would do something interesting with the fourth in the long-running series. Sadly, it's probably the most dysfunctional offering yet, with a clunky stab at innovation having the opposite effect to the one intended. Unless they meant it to be bad.

Oh well, as Eurogamer's residentitchytrigger-finger mentalist, I cleaned out my carpal tunnels and dragged myself back anyway.

The first signs are hardly promising, with the lurid orange GunCon 3 proving to be a complete nightmare to set up. Sporting two chunky cube-shaped infrared receivers, which perch on top of the TV, you have to trail the wires in such a way that they don't obscure the picture or cause the receivers to topple off. Once you've got that sorted out, it's apparent during the five-point calibration process that the receivers have real issues operating at short ranges of a few feet. This is strange, considering we've never had similar issues with the Wiimote on the same TV. Eventually, it got to the stage where the aiming was so flaky that we had to set it up on a smaller screen, where we had no problems whatsoever.

Then there's the design of the GunCon 3. Apart from being a nauseating shade of Berocca orange, it's a cheap, tacky wired USB controller burdened by a needlessly complicated design, which manages to require a side grip, about half a dozen buttons, and two flimsy thumb-sticks. In the basic, straight-up port of the arcade mode, this isn't such a problem, as not many of them are used - as usual you duck in and out of cover by pressing a single button and cycle through the weapons with the trigger while in cover. The rest of the time, the game does most of the movement for you as soon as you've cleared out all the goons, with the occasional need to flick between multi-screen environments using the left stick when prompted.

'Time Crisis 4' Screenshot 1

There's fire in the terminal!

As for the game itself, it's all predictable light-gun fodder, featuring some fascinatingly wooden Final Fantasy rejects in the lead roles. The story's really not what you're here for, but for the record this one has you playing the part of Giorgio Bruno or Evan Bernard, two immaculately (and comically) coiffured gun-toting agents trying to put a stop to a black market in top-secret bio-weapons. Without spoiling it too much, these amount to gigantic swarming insect-like things called Terror Bites, which will eat your face, so you find yourself machine gunning hordes of scuttling beetles, airborne swarms and other horrible bugs that inflate and explode puss all over your lovely suit if you're not careful.

Elsewhere the game makes an occasional foray into pure on-rails territory, where you're onboard a bulletproof helicopter, spitting endless rounds of hot lead into numerous not-so-bulletproof helicopters, and swooping around the city streets or an airport in pursuit of a specific target while taking down an entire corrupt army in the process. If it could be this relentless, daft and exciting for longer, it'd be a more enjoyable experience, but all-too-soon you're back playing peek-a-boo against idiotic enemies with possibly the most ham-fisted aiming in videogaming history. As usual, progress is aligned to your ability to remember when those unavoidable attacks are heading your way. The multi-screen stuff (on the rare occasions when the game uses it) is quite tense and exciting, but this is pretty much the only way Time Crisis 4 distinguishes itself from every other on-rails shooter. And as usual the game overall is incredibly short.

NOOOOO!!!!!

Guess I'll stick with PS2 and TC2 thanks to LCD topgun, I'll get this if it gets really cheap. Shame as this would have been one of my first purchases when I got my PS3 :(

I love me some shooters of this ilk so I'm sad that TC4 didn't perform well enough (technically) to spark the genre back to what it was during the the early to mid PS2 years.

Having purchased a new CRT last December so I can still play my PS1&2 shooters as they were meant to be was in hindsight a very smart move. Now if only Sega would bother themselves to port Ghost Squad and HOTD to the PS2...

In fairness, the original arcade game did shame the PS2 :p So damn flickery!

Shame to hear about the gun itself, though. I was hoping for that grip to be removable or at least swappable for lefties.

That's a bit of a shame. I was really hoping that this could kickstart a return to popularity for lightgun games. I am still upset that there has never been a home version of Virtua Cop 2 & 3. Anybody know where I can get a copy of those games? Can I buy them for my laptop?

Leftie warning - I got this game in the States last year, but have to warn all lefties that it's almost impossible to play through the FPS section as a left-handed player. You're forced to hold and aim the gun in your right hand, and move etc. with your left hand which didn't work for me at all.
Arcade mode is fine (but still cumbersome as a leftie, I had to adopt a 'wrap-around, under hand grip to reach the cover buttons).

Anyway, just a note for all fellow lefties so you're not too disappointed...

I hated when Time Crisis went in the frantic automatic weapons kind of direction. There was always plenty of that shit in the arcades.

Time Crisis 1 FTW.

Virtua Cop 2 was converted to home consoles. There's a great version of it on the Saturn and you can also find it for the PS2 via Virtua Cop Elite Edition (PAL only). There's also a version for winPC but these days you'll be hard pressed to find a setup where you can play it properly with a light gun (use a mouse). As always Ebay is your best bet to find such games.

@Les

Indeed, but unfortunately it just doesn't work or feel the same, no matter how many plastic contraptions for the wiimote they come up with. Still, its better than nothing.

Anyone have an opinion on which of the current group of Wii LG-type shooters is the best? I've heard conflicting reports about Ghost Squad and the Resi shooter.

And there was a home version on the Saturn too of course. Great fun.

Those are two very different games.

Ghost Squad is much like the arcade games of old, as it's simple and short. The story is just there for the sake of it. A good choice if you don't mind getting only a few hours of game out of your purchase. Its also good for a quick fix play.

Umbrella Chronicles take a different approach with very long stages (a single stage can take longer to get through than a complete play of ghost squad), various weapons to use at once, a more involving story complete with documents to read and plenty of cut-scenes.

Either are also good fun with a second player.

It's very sad. I hope one day a good game will emerge again, because I did really love this genre and the only reason I stopped playing the previous Time Crises is because modern TVs don't work with it.

I'm hoping that the gun isn't actually as bad as it seems and that some other game will show this. It seems to have some potential at least.

And yeah, Point Blank was great also, but only really as a multiplayer game for two guns. ;)

The best thing about the Namco arcade shooters was always the recoil-enabled GunCon and the satisfying noise it made when you fired. That was never replicated at home (officially anyway, I seem to remember some naff 3rd party PSone gun with recoil).

Yeah, but if you played seriously you'd clamp the slide in place with your free hand anyway =)

Time Crisis (and Project Titan) and Point Blank 1 & 2 were amongst my most-played PS1 games. It's a real shame the Wii didn't live up to its promise of being a viable shooter platform.

In a way doesn't really matter whos fault it is, it's another exclusive that isn't that great. Exclusives are all that seperate the 360 and PS3 really and owning both the 360 fairs better in the department so far. And that's what people will look at, who is developing the games has little relevance.

Has anyone tried to play this 2 player yet?

Do you need two sensors [and an extra USB hub] or can you make do with two guns and one LED thing?

Fortunately I have a 60 gig console so no need to buy a hub.

You can get the guns solus somewhere in the world right? Saves buying an extra copy of the bundle or consulting one of these self-help books...

Boo. I loved Time Crisis 1 and Point Blank 1 & 2 on PS1... Haven't read anything about TC4 until now and am really disappointed that it's shit. I'm left handed as well so am definitely not going to get it now, why do they need to overcomplicate things? The original gun worked great for R and L handers!

Because apparently calling people xbots, fanboys or moronic isn't using puerile insults.

They made a joke about a game that turned out bad playing on the perception (and truth) of PS3's lack of decent exclusives compared to 360. Nothing wrong with that.

That doesn't make them automatically fanboys or xbots. That makes them every other person on the internet who realises the same thing.

Of couse it's a joke...but a moronic and needless fanboy joke at that. Jabbing in sarcastic comments (oh yet another winning exclusive for the PS3! Hurrah!) when people were talking about the game is not constructive, the only intent was to insult and to ridicule. If that's not moronic then nothing is.
