Throw yourself off a building News

PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

17 May, 2007

Teenagers thrive on random chaos. You don't need an extensive market research report to tell you that. But Sony went ahead and commissioned one anyway, found out that the kids also like creativity, community, competition and other c-words, and the result is a new physics-based "action comedy" game built by Idol Minds called PAIN. It's due out exclusively on PS3 Store this Christmas.

Using a powerful man-sized slingshot, PAIN invites you to propel yourself into a city in an attempt to cause as much damage to yourself and sew as much panic among the locals as possible. Havok physics and ragdoll tech make sure that you flail and crash into and off of things with conviction, and in-flight controls allow you to drift, strike poses and try and grab things. Initially you're just being slung across the street, but the game expands to send you arcing over rooftops, clipping trains, scaffold and all sorts of other painful snags on the way.

There are a range of game modes to get on with, including "Spank the Monkey" and "Mime Toss", along with online multiplayer "HORSE" and other co-operative and competitive modes. Idol Minds is taking a community-minded approach, saving every game of PAIN to the PS3 hard disk as an action-replay, and then allowing you to upload the most outrageous and interesting. Other PAIN players will then be able to download, rank and comment on your work.

You're right, it does sound quite interesting. There's no word on how much it will cost, but hopefully it won't hurt too much.

Sounds awesome.

There should be more games that just let you piss about and have fun. Who says that in a game you have to be in constant peril?

Challenge is overrated, just let me have fun in a fantasy world.

Fantastic trailer. Use of Havok is nice, but imagine it running under Euphoria...

So basically it's the ragdoll mini-games from FlatOut expanded into a whole game?

I'm sure it'll be fun, but one has to wonder about long-term appeal.

It's a PS Store game, so you won't be paying full price for it. I'd guess something like £6.99 if current prices are anything to go by.

Wouldn't make any difference. Euphoria and Endorphin are geared toward combining AI into motion and blending into different animations. And Havok animation tools are actually quite good, more than enough for a game whose main character only seems to have two states: running animation and ragdoll.

The screenshots show multiplayer, so it'll be interesting how this fleshes out, and it's also the focus of the game, rather than an additional mini-game so sckepticism is acceptable, but i wouldn't completely judge it like that.

No worries... I've been looking at the vids for Endorphin for over a year now, and it is amazing what they can do, but I'd love to see a version which runs realtime with less of an overhead. We got some tutorial vids which like I said, really are awesome, but the only real candidates for it would be a heavy ragdoll collision environment... Eg. American football and thats about it!

Sorry, then. It's just that Japanese devs more often have the guts and imagination to come up with concepts like these.

By the way, wasn't there a similar idea in one of the South Park episodes?

Hey guys,

I know this question is off the topic but i was wondering, Im trying to buy final fantasy vii for the pc for my friend for his bday cuz he was obsessed with it when he was younger. I was looking on ebay and was thinking of buying it from the US. Would it work over here or should i buy a european one? Are pc games region specific?
(This probably sounds like a really stupid question, sorry!)

Thanks!

Erm. yes. you're right. stupid question. You actually couldn't find any site that might be related to it, on the whole internet? try the pc section mate.

Anyway. This idea sounds like a game that'd be fun for the first hour or so. then you'd get tired of having to wait so long to land on the ground if you fail at a tricky jump. Also has the potential for beaucoup de glitches. But, what do i know? Could be pretty fun
