Three more titles for budget XBLA range News

Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

12 November, 2008

Microsoft appears to be preparing three more games for the budget Xbox Live Arcade Hits range.

Halved in price to 400 MS Points (GBP 3.40 / EUR 4.80) will be Worms, Feeding Frenzy and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, according to the list on the official US Xbox website.

However, we've had a scout around the Live service and can find no mention of the games in the XBLA Hits section.

Of the three, Worms will attract the most attention. This version recycles the classical formula of old, which, if you can stomach it, still holds plenty of local head-to-head charm. Head over to our Worms XBLA review for more.

Reviews of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 suggest a faithful port with online battles, while critiques of Feeding Frenzy paint a dismal picture.

Our picks of the rest of the Xbox Live Arcade Hits are DOOM, Marble Blast Ultra, and Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords.

All, except the latter, cost 400 Microsoft Points (GBP 3.40 / EUR 4.80). Puzzle Quest began at a higher price point, and therefore halves to 800 MS Points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60).

We've asked Microsoft for further clarification on dates.

Worms is very tempting. Anyone on here actually still play it?

I got Ultimate MK 3 or whatever it is when it first came onto XBLA ages ago. Absolutley dire, should have got the trial first but my housemate begged me to buy it, he played it once.

Worms was launched in March 2007 and has been an amazing success story on XBLA, despite EG's review (which I think was the lowest we got! - thanks EG!). During the first two months it was up there with Gears for the amount of play hours on Live and was the most played XBLA title of 2007 :-) It was also in the top 10 weekly sales for about 70 weeks, yes, despite that EG review :)

At $10/£6 800pts it was very good value for money and now at $5/£3, it's ridiculous value for money. Of course I'm biased...

There is of course, a free trial..

I can't recommend worms enough.

My son and I have been playing this since it's release and I'm really proud of the way he has got his head 'round the whole strategy of the game.

Nice to see an old school game being as loved now as when I was playing it on the Amiga. Also it doesn't hurt having the kids quoting "incoming" in the worms voice now and then.

Incidentally, its quite interesting to see how XBLA has evolved and where it's going. Back in 2005 when we first discussed bringing Worms to XBLA (as a launch title) it was all grand plans, I think it's been fantastic and I personally enjoy titles on there as much as full releases simply because they're of the pick up and play type - as much as I love Fallout3 and many other games, I just don't have the time to 'invest' in those games, with a family and kids of my own.

Still, I think you're starting to see more complete, fuller titles for XBLA and that will be the case for anything else we do on the service :-)

We're still getting our heads around that the game is now less than the price of a London pint!

Aye, worms was a pretty decent conversion. Even without the multiplayer side to it, its still a fun single player game anyway, so its probably worth the points alone for that.

Multiplayer was good fun although i really struggle with the implementation of the ninja rope on the 360. Although thats a controller issue and i'm sure its only because I got very used to the old armageddon method.

Although *cough* Alien Breed *cough*... would be perfect for XBLA - and some Superfrog as well ;)

I really enjoyed Feeding Frenzy. Well worth picking up at that price. Kristan's review is completely unfair, and completely wrong.

Can't believe I haven't already picked Worms up - there are a good 3 or 4 or more people on my friends list who play it from time to time, so I simply will not resist any longer.

Even though I've been saving those points for GTA IV DLC, and am fundamentally too mean to buy much on XBLA at all.

Worms is great, and wasn't there something announced about a possible remake or update of Alienbreed a little while back?

Yes, we're in the process of 're-imagining' Alien Breed, some folks got to see it in France last week. People liked it - a lot... Press for it will be in the new year. No more details for now, sorry.

Worms was an automatic purchase for me when I first saw it on there, since I first played it on the PSone and my friends and I had leagues on it I’ve been hooked. Still play it now over Live.

Plus, £3.60 for a pint? You’re drinking in either the wrong parts of town, poncey bars, or both.

Hey Spadge, any Worms love for the PS3 coming our way?
Don't worry, I'm about to buy the XBLA version anyway..

Also, to others, the price changes have now taken effect, yet they are not on the specific "XBLA Hits" page, you'll find them under "All Games".
Happy worming, people! :)

Petulant, I paid £4.20 for a bottle of Bulmers in an ordinary bar in London lately... you can pay more and you can pay less. You get my point. (pint?)

@spadge (seeing as you're around)... can Worms be played online with two players on one xbox and another player somewhere else? I ask because the wife and I already have it, but would like to involve my brother in our games too (ooh err), who has yet to purchase it, and is elsewhere in the country with his own xbox.

doehead, no sorry, there was some issue with implementing that at the time (I forget the reason), basically you could only have 1 account in the game on any one xbox. Only way you could possibly do that is perhaps have a 1 on 1 and 'share' worms on a team... i know that's a bit half-arsed...

Don't drink Bulmers then! I do get your point, though it is fairly easy to find cheap drinking establishments in mosy areas of London. Anyway, who cares as ong as you have a spiffing time!
