Three more songs for GHII 360

More from the PS2 original.

RedOctane's offering Guitar Hero II Xbox 360 owners another slice of the original game in the form of the fourth track pack on Xbox Live Marketplace.

As with the other three, it's 500 Microsoft points (GBP 4.25 / EUR 5.82) and consists of three songs - The Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated", Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" and Judas Priest's "You've Got Another Thing Coming". It's 44MB, in case you're wondering.

Past song packs have included the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Queen, The Donnas and Bad Religion, but have yet to offer anything besides tracks borrowed from the PS2-only Guitar Hero original.

Plus, we don't know about you, but we're slightly less excited by paying near enough a fiver for three songs in light of EA's promise of album-length downloadable content packs for Rock Band later in the year.

u can stick ur 500 points right up your asses!

And b4 u all moan, i have absolutely NO qualms about paying for what is EXTRA content to a game, which of course developers have to be paid for etc.

HOWEVER, 5 quid for three songs???!!! I can pay 75 pence on itunes and get real songs for that price, and that has to stretch a lot more for royalties, production, music videos etc.

300 points for a pack - that is it! as much as i adore GHII, i wont be a muppet like many others out. Just refuse to buy it and they will lower prices. But alas, the blind will buy in the masses,

I'm a bit wary about the Rock Band thing. Sure it sounds good, but I'm worried they might be going for a quantity-over-quality thing. You can't just slap any old songs into a game, there's a lot of work that has to go into balancing the difficulty levels and generally making sure that they are fun to play. Have a listen to Harmonix talk about the amount of work and thought that they put into the music selection in Guitar Hero. I'm not sure how EA think they'll manage to put out packs with 10-15 songs every week without sacrificing a lot of quality or just slapping piles of money up so that they can make a quick buck.

In other discussion, I personally don't care about the price of these GH2 downloadables. 500 points is a negligible amount, and it's completely unfair to compare them against iTunes. Sure, it would be better if they cost less, but there's a little more to it than just slapping them up on Live. What I want is for them to get around to putting up Godzilla from GH1, and then maybe something that wasn't in the original game. However I doubt that will happen with GH3 just around the corner.

..but Harmonix will be the ones having to create said Rock Band content for EA to "live up" to that expectation?

I personally think this is priced too high. However, comparisons to iTunes prices are irrelevant. You aren't comparing identical things. People make the same comments about SingStar too, and again that is irrelevant.

You are buying game content. The fact that game content happen to contain music doesn't mean it is the same thing as a basic mp3. Can people really not see how additional work goes into building up the multiple tracks and designing the gameplay?

View the price based on whether you think it is good value (a) for the gameplay time expected to result from it, and (b) how it stands comparison to the original the price of the tracks bundled with the full title.

Whether there are royalty or music video costs involved or not, as a player I don't care. I simply care whether I am getting value for money on my gameplay purchase.
