Battle of the Bands

  • Developer - Planet Moon Studios
  • Release date - 16th May

These days there's always an elephant in the room. If you're making an MMO it's World of Warcraft. If you're making a shooter it's Halo. If you're making a fuss it's Naomi Campbell. Pity poor Planet Moon, then, because Battle of the Bands is up against industry super-elephants Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

At a glance, it's 7/10 as usual. Instead of the icons moving down the screen and you matching them, they move up it and you match them. That should confuse the lawyers. Instead of doing combos to build Star Power for massive bonuses, you do combos to fire off attacks for massive bonuses. By now the lawyers have gone home.

But actually it is quite different. For a start, it's on the Wii, so forget button-matching, this is gesture-matching. Those icons with arrows on represent a direction that you have to thrust the Wii remote, with firm, Sooty-waving-a-wand movements the best. (P.S. Whatever happened to Matthew Corbett?) You also have to wiggle the remote left and right to match zigzag patterns - some as broad as the icon area, some much smaller, requiring precise hand movements.

The other actually-it-is-quite-different bit is that it doesn't just have adversarial layers, like Guitar Hero III, but, as the title suggests, battling is the whole point. Whether you're playing single-player or against a real-life friend, there's always another band on the other side of the screen trying to outdo your efforts.

'THQ Wii Showcase' Screenshot bob

Hitting the icons involves jerking the Wiimote this way and that. It's very intuitive, with good visual feedback, and timing isn't hard to master.

This has several gameplay implications. Most obviously, before each round you have to pick from a range of possible attack moves that can be deployed. These will break up your opponent's moves, perhaps reversing his controls, and are activated by performing sequences of combos. When they're fired off, the person on the receiving end can block them by timing B-button presses to raise a shield, although if he or she can't keep the rhythm then the hits will rain down. The other implication, of course, is that failure is no longer missing too many notes and being shot down; it's not scoring as many points as your opponent.

But more noticeable than any of that is the stylistic implication: there are two bands on-screen, and the band who is performing the best is the one whose version of the current song is heard predominantly. There are over 30 songs (many licensed, from the likes of Keane, Gorillaz and many others), but they're not the original recordings or even "as performed by"; instead they are re-recorded in Country-and-Western, marching band, Latin, hip-hop and rock styles. Depending on which band you play as, you'll hear one of those styles when you're in front and another when you're losing. (See what we mean in the THQ Gamers Day video.)

In total there are 11 bands to choose from (each with its own strand of the Adventure mode for single players), and they're all made up of silly stylised characters. There are giant funky Afros and loud capes, sombreros and luchador masks, fire-breathing, suits of armour... Sometimes it's like watching Grim Fandango vs. Asterix and sometimes it's Army Men vs. Chili Peppers.

Overall it's clear that it's not trying to be Guitar Hero or Rock Band, really - it's a simpler, sillier game with a sense of humour and good old-fashioned abstract concepts rather than pretending to be in Almost Famous. It won't have as much hardcore appeal, but the controls work well and it plays a satisfying game. It's not an elephant-beater, then, but it's got some tricks up its trunk.

I like the look of all of these with the exception of Beach Sports. The only major problem I have with them is they are likely to be full price titles...but all seem like they should be budget (possibly with the exception of Deadly Creatures..if it turns out good).

If they got fairly decent reviews I'd buy Battle of the Bands and De Blob for £20 a piece...but I wouldn't pay £30/£40 for them.

1. it's a PREview not a REview.. If you have trouble understanding the difference between the two of them and how journalists handle them - then i suggest sticking a dunces hat on and going back to school.

2. How the fuck do you know they're mediocre, unless somehow you've played them?

"if you imagine it on videogamey paper, where both creatures are anthropomorphised into colourful, Yoshi-esque caricatures"

Oh my god NO. Don't you think we've had enough of that on the Wii? At this point a game without so much "personality" would be a novelty! I'd like to see a few more Wii games that don't have the perfunctory Wii cuteness. Nothing against cute, but we're drowning in it now.

I may be proven wrong, but Battle of the Bands sounds like it will be the single most annoying game of all time. Ever. Not only is it completely devoid of originality (1 guitarist, 2 guitarists, 1 band, 2 bands! Next stop: Music Industry Hero complete with Rolodex and martini controllers...) but have you ever played a Wii game that has Quicktime events that incorporate remote wiggling? (Umbrella Chronicles is the first abomination to come to mind.) Almost as fun as a root canal.

Maybe it's time I sell my Wii. I can remember when I actually liked the thing...

@Zero_Cool: you REALLY ARE insecure arent you?

Why not just go back to playing all those GREAT lovely grey and brown fps games you love so much.. then you wouldnt feel the need to post in every wii thread telling us all how crap it is.

If that's not sad, then i dont know what is...

Same goes for anyone who feels the need to proclaim to everyone that they're about to sell their console (which they never owned in the first place) .. rolls eyes..

smelly, this is the internet, people have the right to express their opinions

you making unfounded personal assumptions "I'd tell you to get over yourself in return.. but you're obviously an insecure fat 12 year old with no friends" just makes you look like a douche"

and your right, we dont yet know if these games ill be any good, this is a preview, but id be very suprised if they were anything better than mediocre, and usually EG doesnt gloss over games issues, so this is unusual, and a little suspicious

none of these games sound very fun to me, just from their very concepts...

Getting back on topic children, Battle of the Bands (At first glance) sounds like my personal hell: The battle mode from Guitar Hero III incorporating tracks from bands I don't care for remixed in a latin/country and western/brass band style. Just... no...

Although I suppose that's better than tracks from bands I LOVE remixed in a latin/country and western/brass band style.

@Fendermaster. Yes, people have to right to express their opinions.. But apparently not if those opinions are against the populasist opinion of the fanboys.

See what do you think would happen if i went into a 360 thread and posted:

"Man, this is why i hate the fucking 360."

I wouldn't have 1 person jump on me.. i'd have thousands of bill gates loving saddos jumping down my neck calling me all manner of names (and rightly so)

But if someone does that in a wii thread, and i jump in and do the same thing.. Its apparently me that's in the wrong..

WTF is up with this story?

How does replying to a rather blatent sad troll of a young kid make me look like a "douche". Seriously? Get a grip ffs.

Both guys are sad trolls.

"Personally i'm fed up with all the grey and brown boring fps games on the 360, it's all it ever gets.. i'm selling the 360 i never actually owned"

See?

Or is your brain to small to be able to see any connection there?

"Getting back on topic childre"

Yes please! I just get fed up of the blatent fucking trolls in every wii thread, and i cant stop myself replying sometimes.. But unfortunately once you reply to one, they call in all their (inevitably) 360 owning mates for backup then it goes all out of control..

"Getting back on topic children, Battle of the Bands (At first glance) sounds like my personal hel"

I personally dont see what it brings to the table which is different from rock band, et al.. Sounds just like a marketing mans cash in. I dont see the "appeal" without a guitar either..

Deadly Creatures (more so) and de blob (less so) look good though.

Does colourful always equate to 'good game' in your Wii world?

Only one game looks vaguely interesting, here. de Blob. Maybe Deadly Creatures. The others are shite-in-a-Wii-shaped-box 'family' games.

i just thought that these games didnt sound great, band mash ups sounds annoying, wagling a wii remote to latin, country and hip hop versions of korn and soundgarden songs just sounds pretty awful, de blob doesnt look very special (or fun), big beach sports speaks for itself and deadly creatures... does anyone really want to play as a scorpion battling spiders with wii motion controls... i highly doubt it... these games arent why i bought a wii, and in all honestly, sound like the type of budget shovelware that usually only appears at the end of a consoles lifespan

and EG would normally rip on these types of games, even in previews

I'll answer this as if it wasnt meant to be a dig.. And even though i dont see what this has to do with ANY of my previous comments slagging off the trolls.. i'll answer it fairly ...

Not necessarily.

But on the other hand, i'm bored of dull grey and brown games.

I tend to prefer colourful games if that's what you're asking though.. Colourful normally means "non realistic" which in turn (hopefully) means that i'm going to be surprised at each new "level". By which I mean.. Take a shooter based in a "real world" city, each level is going to be grey as thats what cities are (concrete), and each level is going to be reality - there's going to be no surprise, nothing to keep you playing APART from the story.

Now a game based in non-reality say mario galaxy, can take you all over the place and surprise you on each level. One level you can be swimming with an sting ray, next you're in a giant toy factory with you being really small.. etc etc. So you keep playing, not for the story, but to see what comes next..

Colourful games not based in reality allow the developers to have more imagination (they dont even have to have real world physics) and as such make them (imho) more interesting to play.

That's not to say there aren't good games with great imagination based in the "real world" (half life, portal, cod4 all spring to mind), and it's not to say all colourful games are good (most are shit aimed at kids with no real value - so i can understand how a lot of gamers have gotten this "colourful = shit and for kids" opinion), it's just to say that i'd rather be pulled into someones imaginary world - than play in a game based firmly in reality

>If you just ignored these guys the thread wouldn't derail quite so spectaculary.

I know.. problem is i read most these threads when i'm stressed out and pissed off at work (and thus looking for a break).. and i read some troll posting shit like above guys have done and i vent my anger on them.

I know i shouldnt, it's not their fault their saddo kids with no lives.. But I just cant help it.. I only do it when i'm fed up at work.. maybe i should hold off on visiting until i'm at home, relaxed and can ignore the little shits

"...so i can understand how a lot of gamers have gotten this "colourful = shit and for kids" opinion..."

Just for the record - and because I get the feeling I may have been vaguely part of the "opposition" you responded to above, I do not think that colorful = shit/ for kids by any means. It's only been about a year or so since I discovered Nintendo by way of an old Gamecube, and to my surprise I have become a total Mario etc fan. Galaxy is great, Partners in Time is great, Thousand Year Door, oddly enough, is among my all-time favorite games. And I agree with what you say above about being surprised by content that's not bound by realism.

HOWEVER, I think in the PARTICULAR case of Deadly Creatures the reviewer misses the mark. Doing the cartoon anthropomorphization (holy crap suffixes) routine would kill that game. It's become such a forgone conclusion that every Nintendo game has to look like claymation or whatever, I actually get excited when I see an exception! The Wii catalog has taken on such a homogeneous tone that people think it's somehow technically incapable of any alternative, which is just ridiculous. It kind of comes back to your argument about wanting to see variety from level to level - I also want to be able to build a library of Wii software and see some variety from game to game! So maybe Mario Galaxy one night, Medal of Honor the next, and something with photo-realistic bugs the night after that. Another game with characters that look like Yoshi is NOT going to knock anyone's socks off at this point. There's absolutely no novelty left in it.
