THQ pulls Conan into Sept News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Robert Purchese

12 September, 2007

THQ has brought the release dates of Conan and Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts forward to 28th September.

Conan is the gory and adult-themed hackandslasher for 360 and PS3, created by developer Nihilistic Software - responsible for the shonky Marvel Nemesis in 2005, Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption in 2000, and canned project StarCraft Ghost.

You play as the beefed-up barbarian of Robert E. Howard's imagination, and go around chopping limbs off and battling mythical beasts using all sorts of button-mashing mayhem. It was down for release in 2008 just over a month ago, before the publisher's dwindling financial results saw it pulled forward first to October, and now even sooner.

We had a chance to see it earlier in the year, but still remain a little sceptical. Expect our full thoughts soon.

Opposing Fronts, on the other hand, is the standalone expansion to the wonderful World War II strategy game Company of Heroes. Since then, developer Relic has been busy adding more convincing AI behaviour, more realistic physics, and fancy new weather effects.

There's new campaigns, too - one covering the British 2nd Army's liberation of Caen in France, the other documenting the German battle to repel the enormous allied airborne invasion Operation Market Garden.

Pop over to our Company of Heroes and Opposing Fronts gamepages to find out more.

Huge fan of CoH, and in the oppsing fronts beta, really sad to see them release a game before it's done. Possibly brought forward to compete with WiC, but seriously there are balance and connections issues still in beta that need to be done and doesn't seem likely. Stop releasing games early please kthnx.

Conan looks like a wannabe God of War clone. Almost a straight rip-off in fact, copying such things as orbs, chests, quick time events and even the appearance of some of the monsters. I think this game is going to get killed.

I feel sorry for Nihilistic. Very talented bunch who aren't allowed to realise their potential because of pressure to get something out within unrealistic timescales. However, Gamespot have just had a look at this and were pretty positive - and it's got Ron Perlman doing the voice for Conan, so it can't be all bad.

Conan's two weeks from release, now! :o I've just read the latest preview, seen the accompanying footage, and the game looks like it could catch many by pleasant surprise.

If you read the Nihilistic blog entry: http://www.nihilistic.com/blog.php?actio...
about Conan, you can see the mention of a "Fall release" several times, in May posts from the webmaster. In July, October is mentioned. People SHOULD NOT fear a rush job, here.

Senor Webmaster also makes mention of a DEMO, in an August posting! :D
A sweet demo experience would basically seal the deal, for me.

Can someone explain what the hell 'shonky' means?

Oh

It's Aussie slang apparently...

Shonky : dubious, underhanded. E.g. a shonky practice, shonky business etc.

By Crom! If this game doesn't live up to the wine swilling, wench lusting bloodthirsty pirate, war mongering ways of Conan i shall swab the decks in blood. Yes dogs, i'll be buying this as soon as it releases, regardless of if it's shit!

"Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet."
