THQ confirms Red Faction III

Explains why Juiced, Stuntman were binned.

THQ has confirmed Red Faction III is in development for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Saints Row developer Volition is making it, according to a conference call with boss Brian Farrell. "More exciting destruction technology" will be added this time around.

Red Faction is a first-person shooter set on Mars where Arnold Schwarzenegger once lived. The 2001 original's big boast was the ability to leave bullet holes in things you shot. And the sequel featured even more physics power.

Both were well received, although Kristan and Tom just admitted to maybe possibly overrating them a bit. Perhaps.

Little else is known about the third instalment, other than it will be available before April 2009.

The conference call also revealed details of the Vigil-developed massively-multiplayer online Warhammer 40K game - not to be confused with Warhammer Online by EA Mythic.

Farrell has apparently seen the game running and was honest and in no way biased when he said he was "pleasantly surprised" with how it's looking: "So far so good." However, it's still a long way from completion and Vigil is being told to take its time.

Later on Farrell sung some songs and told us an Ultimate Fighting Championship game announcement would be made on Memorial Day weekend (24th May), when big men will do the sport for real in a special event.

THQ also went on to explain why the Stuntman and Juiced series had been canned. Stuntman was too old-fashioned and scripted apparently, while Juiced on six platforms was too ambitious. Er, but why was the series canned?

You can listen to the investor call for yourself over on the THQ website.

Hopefully the UFC title lives up to Anchors title on the Dreamcast.

Chances of the "hole producing physics" only being on select surfaces used as part of the pre-determined path and not everything in the game - Dead Cert.

Didn't Volition also do the first two RF games?
  • Artemis_Matsas #4 4 years ago

    Shame about Stuntman though...
  • J.C #5 4 years ago

    40k MMO? Holy fucking shit!

The first Red Faction game was fantastic, goes down as one of my Fave games. The fact that they achieved it on the PS2 is amazing actually.

I still sometimes fire it up just to load my savegame of the section where you go down in the glass elevator and the shootout from hell kicks off - and there's a flyable spacecraft waiting for you in the hangar. The breaking glass effects still hold up to this day. Good times.

Out with two old tired franchises, in with one new tired franchise

I do not understand how you can pick Red Faction as the headline here when the news includes the 40K MMO.

What are you guys on about, RF was awesome. Can't wait.

I remember a friend little bro playing Red Faction on his PS2 years ago. It seemed really cool, shooting through walls to get at your enemy at unexpected directions. I hope it can keep as much destructibility as possible, as BF Bad Company will surely be out beforehand and could set the benchmark.

I've been getting back in to Stuntman Ignition and it's just so good! The perfect game to have a break from relentless horror and shooting.

I love it, massively underated in my opinion.

    Will Juiced really be missed?
  • Eraysor #15 4 years ago

I loved the original Red Faction. The Mars rebellion idea was great.

WAIT HOLY CRAP THERES A 40K MMO.

I should read the article before I comment.

Red Faction 1, ugly and brilliant. Took all the things I thought Half Life was going to let me do, and didn't; then let me do them.

Red Faction 2, pretty, and pretty shitty. Tried to be Halo, clearly not having got the memo that HALO IS SHIT!

Geomod could have made a generation of fabulous shooters, instead, we have to listen to tedious cunts talking about how recharging shields and nice grenades supposedly revolutionised the FPS genre. (My clammy arse-crack they did), instead of spawning a generation of "me-too" bollocks.

Apart from Timesplitters, RF1, Riddick and Black, there's not an FPS from the last gen I'd waste my piss on if it was on fire.

If RF3 and Fracture (which no longer hurts my eyes) can bring Geomod back to the fore, I'll be a happy guy.

As long as this lives up to the brilliance of RF1 then I'll be happy. On the other hand, I thought RF2 was incredibly shit. I don't want a repeat of that.

Oh, and regarding Stuntman being "too old-fashioned and scripted", here's an idea for free, THQ: make it less linear...?!

Just a thought. I kinda enjoyed Ignition, but thought it would have been far more enjoyable if you were given free reign over a small area and the ability to make the stunts youself - perhaps working on a points system whereby you have to meet a minimum requirement to pass the level. It was an enjoyable game in small doses, but I think the series' greatest flaw has been its linearity and repetitiveness.

    I second a request for Freespace 3

If red faction 3 carries on from red faction 1 then it'll be game of the year, if from 2 then it'll be horrible.
  • dsmx #22 4 years ago

There were a few high points in RF2 it had dual wielding in it and you could blow up some walls every now and then.
  • Super_Zee #23 4 years ago

If it's as good as RF1, completely ignores RF2, and has all the multiplayer maps from RF1, it's a winner.
  • FooAtari #24 4 years ago

Red Faction was pretty cool (might see if I can get hold of it actually). RF2 was not so cool.

Shame Stuntman has been dropped, they had only done one game (2 if you could what is essentially a remake on 360/PS3), so not sure how its a tired franchise symbiote.

Juiced though was shit, glad that one isn't coming back.

And a Warhammer 40k MMO?? that would be sweet. Could be a WoW beater for me. How come it isn't getting it's own news story!!
