There's still hope for Crackdown 2 - RTW

MacDonald doesn't think the door's closed.

Realtime Worlds boss Colin MacDonald has offered a glimmer of hope for a sequel to Crackdown, the fantastic Xbox 360 openworld romp from 2007.

"It was a horrible, horrible decision that we still dwell on," Colin MacDonald, studio ringleader, told VG247 of the decision not to jump straight on a sequel.

"But I don't think the door's closed. Obviously, right now we're tied up with APB and everything else, but hopefully in the future we'll have the resource and something can be worked out with Microsoft."

MacDonald went on to illustrate the love within Realtime Worlds for Crackdown, noting some staff got tattoos of the game pricked into their arms.

But, rued MacDonald, Crackdown sales "didn't add up".

"We're not in the business of doing things because we'd like to, if we can't guarantee that it makes sense for the company. That doesn't work," he said.

Crackdown received a whopping 9/10 from Eurogamer for an explosive, co-operative, and streamlined take on a GTA sandbox theme.

Scotland-based Realtime Worlds is currently hard at work on APB, a modern-day gangland MMO for Xbox 360 and PC.

I thought it sold really well??
  • Penguinzoot #3 4 years ago

I really enjoyed Crackdown. A sequel would be a must-buy for me.
  • mkreku #4 4 years ago

I think "streamlined" is my new hate word. It always means "dumbed down".
  • LeeroyJenkins #5 4 years ago

Yeah, I was under the impression that it sold well too... especially with the Halo 3 beta entries that came with it.

Still... Realtime Worlds have two of the best IP's in gaming at the moment IMO - Crackdown and APB. They must be loving it up there.

    BUY MORE CRACK! DOWN!
  • Crea #7 4 years ago

It did sell well, about 1.5 million copies.

I think the problem was that it was something of an unexpected hit, and so by the time the possibility of a sequel came about, RTW had moved on. You can't keep a full team sitting around doing nothing while the publisher ponders whether or not to give you a deal.

    BRING THE CRACKDOWN!

    Awesome game, truly awesome.

@Nick_JC1 - sorry, I've just been to gamerankings and it says 84%.
  • brainbird #11 4 years ago

I'm sorry, Mr MacDonald. I bought Crackdown second-hand because I didn't expect a very good game and didn't want to spend a lot of money on it.
    I was wrong.

Tbh i think it was a little too streamlined, but ultimately there were more enjoyable moments in crackdown than in GTA4 for example.

Would love to see a sequel with a little more beef.

APB will do till then, make it a launch title for Xbox 3, include the halo 4 b3ta.

    Sad bastards!

Still, Crackdown was an awesome game IMO.

crackdown was ok. artstyle was kind of annoying (unique doesn't mean good). and killing bosses got boring after doing it over and over again.

creating chaos was ok, cars were really wonky to control, game was obviously aiming at using superpowers. collecting orbs was the only thing that got you going...and even that got boring once you'ver had 300-400.

there wasn't enough to do, after a while.

    sequel would be nice though:)

all the fun of playing the race mode with a friend

which basically boiled down to one person racing and the other making a barricade of charred out vehicles and helping the other player cheat by shooting the tires of the other racers

it was like wacky races or something

Loved crackdown, and I would love crackdown 2 too.
    please make it so!
I agree with the above poster, I had more fun with CD than I did with GTA4

I would love to play a sequel with more variety, but with games like InFamous coming out there might not be much of a gap left in the market any more.

I adore Crackdown, and if they announced a sequel, it would instantly jump to the top of my most wanted list (well, maybe just behind Fable 2, but then I'll have that by October, so what the fuck).

I think the general consesus is that it's a "very good" if not "magnificently awesome" game (although it's still one of my favourite Xbox games, and a solid 9/10-er). I wonder if it was the art style that put some people off? Or maybe the lack of a proper mission structure?

Whatever, I think it's a masterpiece and its handful of minor flaws could all be easily fixed in a sequel.

@brainbird - i think you've hit the nail on the head.

I've been craving Crackdown recently ( i generally fantasise about the rocket launcher every time some fuckwit in a 4x4 cuts me up on the Edinburgh City Bypass ), and wish I'd never traded it in. Like some others have said - I got way more fun out of it than I've had in the ( so far ) 30 hours of GTA4, in fact I didn't stop playing it until I'd eked every little bit of gameplay out of it ).

I think from now on - games that I truly love are staying in my collection - less second hand copies means more money going to the developer. GTA4, however is getting traded this month, and I shan't miss it.

Climbing right to the top of the agency tower, taking in the view, then leaping off and into the water for the first time (and getting the acheivement for it) is still one of my greatest ever gaming moments.

I would sell at least one of my testes to medical science for the sequel to be made

  • mazzl #27 4 years ago

a new crackdown would be cool :)
really enjoyed the first one. sold it off, still regret that, will buy it back one day.

please include drop in co-op in CD2! (locale co-op that is!!!)
  • Nithron #28 4 years ago

I never quite "got" this game. It was alright, but it was basically just GTA with less varied missions and a really high jump button.

The co-op was glitchy as hell, too...
  • Quak #29 4 years ago

He seems to have changed his tune. Last I heard from him was something like "Well MS didn't kiss our arses as quickly as we would have liked so we couldn't be arsed, and we moved on to something else instead."

Now they dwell on not sorting it all out.

Sounds like a bit of an idiot.
  • bengray66 #30 4 years ago

I didn't really like crackdown at all to be honest. I didn't like the art style and i just got bored after a few hours.

Maybe its because im not really a gamer of sorts, and i don't really get on with the whole sandbox thing, (gave up on GTA4 after about 3 hours) I haven't even unpacked my 360 since i moved house in June. I'm still waiting for a game to come along and really grab me.

But if you like it, gotta be good news for you.
  • muscleblade #31 4 years ago

    @Nick_JC1

Get your facts right before posting. Its embarrasing! Crackdown was well received from both the critics and the gamers.
84% is considered very good but it should have scored higher imo.

Crackdown is the second reason to own a 360 (The other being Forza2).

Forza 2 is the best reason to own a PS3...

I loved the wind effect that they used a on a high building. When that kicked in you knew that you had climbed to a fair height.
