"The team felt like they'd just be making a "tacked on" multiplayer mode, and since there's no point doing something if you can't do it properly, it was dropped from the plan."

More developers should take note. This is such a good statement i probably buy the game just to support this.

Not a game I would have normally been interested in, but after reading that preview it sounds interesting :)

I had previously felt a bit cynical about this, but a good hands-on preview is always positive news.

Sounds like they have had a pretty clear idea about what their core gameplay is all about. And imo it sounds like a good direction to be a headed.

+1 to what Muscleblade said, I'm fed up of tacked on multiplayer, alongside achievements you can never get because no-one plays it.

I'm not sure what it is about it, but any games footage I've seen look off. I can't clarify what off means, but there's something not right. I do love the 180 spin-headshot drive-180 spinagain-keepgoing move though, I'd buy it just for that :)

That's definetly not a "downside", Mr. Fahey. It's the right thing to do. I really don't get the "online, just because"...

Indeed the article should read "On the upside, The Wheelman is strictly a single-player experience, so no man hours have been wasted on entirely unrequired multi-player." I'm vaguely surprises a professional games journalsit would consider it a downside at all, and would recognise places where it'd be inadvisable.

This is odd from previous previews I'v read most were apprehensive of this game saying that a lot of work was still needed.

I'll add this to wait and see pile.

I'm always up from a bit of Driver & GTA type-game.

Healthy mix of NFS, BO & GTA, created by a developer with a clear set of objectives and knowledge of its limitations. Should make for a great game, I'll be picking this one up.

+1 SJH, this wasn't even on my radar but it sounds bloody awesome from this hands on, like GTA only............... fun.

I think more games should be made this way, it seems to me that when Tigon work with a studio they really push them to create the best game they can.

I played this at Leipzig last year and it seemed pretty sweet then. The feature where you flick the car into others using the right stick is AWESOME and I want to see it in Burnout. RIGHT NOW.

Seen this on telly, it actually looks quite fun.

I laughed when I watched Virtua Vin jump from his moving car into the moving car in front :)

@ Musclebalde and Miiiguel: I'd already copied that exact quote, ready to put my approval of the approach in the comments section, but you've beaten me to it. I'm fed up with every publisher demanding multiplayer at inappropriate times and it's great to see a developer standing up for themselves. Give me a more polished single-player experience any day.

Pursuit Force, anyone?

It is pretty similar to the PSP title, and when I saw how he jumped from car to car booting out perps I KNEW they'd played that one. Then when I saw the very similar on foot shooting sections I knew they'd played that one a LOT.

http://www.us.playstation.com/pursuitfor...

I loved that game, the tongue in cheek anime style was awesome, but it was too damn hard! A new version for home consoles = okay, I'll bite.

Damn your eyes, SixFootHalfling! I was just on lunch, and then I posted too late!

MMMmmm - sounds good - after all the bad previews id read I'd given up on this - sounds like they must have pulled it together in the last few months to make something good. I love fighting in/from cars (and in the game...),so sounds like a purchase for me

I'm glad to hear they won't be tacking on some shite multi-player mode this looks like it might be worth keeping an eye on.

I assume people here remember how just about every game on the N64 (especially Rare's games) had some bullshit 4 player multi-player modes? I could have cheerfully done without them all, waste of cart space (apart from Goldeneye).

HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY
YYYYYY!!!!!!! NO MULTIPLAYER!

I would buy this for that alone. At last someone is realising single player games matter! On that alone I will now check out this game when I wasnt going to before. Kudos.

WOW, considering it had been a one (dodgy) clip wonder for years I thought it would be one of the games that fell into the "held back for quality control" category. But no, nice one.

Technically, it actually was held back for quality control. It was originally scheduled for November, and they decided to give it another few months for bugfixes and polish. It really shows.

Huh, who would have thunk. I watched an early trailer of this and thought it looked less than exciting. But this preview got my attention. I'll lend this one a cautious eye.

Good for them for not going the shoe-horned-in multiplayer route.

Although this game reminds me a little too much of Driver thus far, I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt due to Mr Diesel's previous good behaviour.

also, Shinji: you showed great restraint in not punning around VD's name. (Alas)

"The Wheelman's resemblance to Rockstar's series - or to its legions of imitators"

What's the legion of imitators? Mafia was a great quality game standing on its own feet. Saints Row is the only that could somehow fall under this category. What other? Interstate '82? Come on....
