Shame it came out so late in the PS2 life cycle and after the 360 version, otherwise it would have had a chance to leave a blaze of glory...

Something tells me that those screenies have been touched up.

I mean, where are the jaggies!?

Will you be giving the PSP version the full review treatment also, or just a mini-mention, seeing as it's presumably pretty similar to its PStwo cousin?

I'm absolutely gobsmacked that the PS2 version looks as good as it does and has more or less the same features as the supposedly next-gen version, which is really only next-gen because of its visuals (they weren't all that great anyway... well the cars looked lush but the scenery was far less so with lots of popup, occasional v-sync tearing and some dreadful textures).

I always thought that the concept for TDU was too ambitious for the last-gen systems but obviously not. I'm impressed that Melbourne House have pulled it off.

As far as I'm aware, the last entry in the Test Drive series was released in 2004 on the PStwo, as Test Drive: Eve of Destruction in the USA, but simply called Driven To Destruction over here... ;o)

Hmm, the game sounds like it achieves some impressive technical feats, but mister Whitehead could do with learning the meaning of 'anachronistic': I don't believe that cars bouncing off you without taking damage is wrong for being something which wouldn't occur in the time-period in which the game is set. 'Bizarre' or 'unrealistic' would have been more sensible terms to apply.

Anachronistic in the sense that rigid car models that bounce off each other look out of place in this time period. The one we're in now. Not the one in the game.

Well done to Melbourne House, though the name always remind me of old Spectrum games such as The Hobbit.

PS2 holding it own quite well and thanks to very fast bus architeture, but cannot see being able to compete on same level with the next gens in the long run. But those who hasnt got the x360 version may well be tempted to try it.

Ah, then my apologies.

Still, my original (mis)comprehension did fill my mind with ideas of a game where all the traffic is, inexplicably, made up of horse-drawn carts. Which would be amazing.

Ive seriously never experienced any tearing in any game you claim has it, and I have access to all the games BBIAJ owns so I dont think im missing any.

Hmm.. If they can make it run on a measly PS2, what's stopping them from releasing it on the PC too? I mean, I have a lot better multiplayer options on my PC than on my PS2 or Xbox 360..

Yes, it does -- I've played it for myself online. The PSP version really does look quite amazing as well. If there's one thing that screen can do, other than suck batteries dry in 10 minutes, it's make games look good.

The screenshots in Edge of this particular version look considerably shitter than the ones here, straaange. Anyway the game bored me silly on the 360 and would no doubt do the same on the PS2.Where's God Of War 2 dammit?

It just shows what you can do when you've had years of experience on a platform.

People disappointed with 360/PS3/Wii graphics now almost certainly won't be disappointed once the developers have had enough time to understand the console fully.

True. Imagibe what we'll be seeing on the PS3/Xbox 360 in 3-5 years time. The mind boggles! Furthermore, it also proves that we don't need to constantly upgrade our PC's, if only developers weren't so bloody lazy, and rathered we buy more RAM than bother their arses optimizing their code.

It would be even more impressive a feat if 360 original didn't feature "meh" visuals in the first place. But of course on a PS2 the visuals should seem impressive.

Just did some research on PC release date, several problems found in Beta which have pushed it back to at least March 20th apparently.

PC Minimum Spec:

OS: Windows 2000/XP/Vista
CPU: Intel P4 @ 2.4Ghz or AMD Athlon 2800+.
GPU: ATI Radeon 9800 256MB VRAM or Nvidia 6600 GT with 256 MB of VRAM.
Video Cards with vertex/pixel shaders 2.x and above are recommended.
SPU: DirectX 9.0 compatible Sound Card.
System Memory : 512 MB, 1 GB recommended
Hard Disk free space: 8 GB
DVD drive: 8x minimum
DirectX 9.0C (included)

Turbo Esprit - damn - that was the first Grand Theft Auto. Loved it. Remember TechnoCop also? I was never very good at that one.

@Dan Whitehead: The comments about your younger sister and the game clearly show how existing game engines can be altered to appeal to girls.

I know plenty of girls that like GTA, but aren't really all that into some of the themes of the game.

They like the realism, freedom, exploration, driving and flying - sometimes beating people up - but that probably wouldn't make a good selling point. A good (female) game designer could take the GTA engine and make an excellent female (or child) targeted game.

The Wii could run such a game easily, and with perfectly intuitive controls.

The games industry needs to wake up.

Can't you guys leave a comment alone, occasionally? Did it ever occur to you that yellow mentioned X360 because that's the only next gen console available right now? No way - all you can do is stamp out any enthusiasm for anything that is not XBox and then kick the corpse.

Never mind the dev's achievement - which indeed looks spectacular.

Not being English, out of curiousity (and hopefully furthering my grasp of the English language), can anyone from the UK explain this particular idiom to the rest of us? I gather from colleagues that "dirty bird" might be a reference to loose women? Or should it be interpreted literally?

So, if I want freeform racing through city streets I fire up Midnight Club 3 Dub Edition Remix, if I want freeform racing in the countryside on an island I get Test Drive Unlimited and fire up that.

Nice choices, PS2. Me like.

A pity this game probably squeezes too much juice out of the EE and other PS2 harware to be well emulated in software on the PS3.
