Tekken 6 gets October US release News

Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 News by Oli Welsh

23 June, 2009

Namco Bandai has announced an October 27th release for Tekken 6 in North America, promising it will appear in Europe, Japan and Asia "shortly thereafter".

That date applies to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game. There will also be a PSP version, but the press release doesn't give it a more precise release date than the autumn.

Namco also revealed that it would be selling the game bundled with a wireless Hori arcade stick and an art book for USD 149.99, but there's no word on whether this deal will make it to Europe.

Tekken 6 has been in Japanese arcades since late 2007, but arrives on consoles - including, for the first time, Xbox - with an all-new Scenario Campaign beat-'em-up mode for solo and co-op play.

That means Europe may only get it in November. That's much later than I was expecting.

Tekken used to be a BIG deal, especially in the PSOne days.

But I've barely seen anyone talking about this. How's the arcade version?

Looks like this christmas is going to give us an astonishing amount of good games to choose from. I'm excited, but I am no longer the fighting machine I used to be. The dedication to look out for frame advantage and stances and learn about 400 moves per character has completely left me.

Someone needs to learn what thereafter means.

"Tekken used to be a BIG deal, especially in the PSOne days."

I think the last Tekken killed any entheusiasm for new Tekken games. Not that it was a bad game, but it just seemed to be a rather drab rehash of previous Tekkens with no 'stand-out' features to promote it.

Admittedly Soulcaliber 4 and DOA 4 were just HD rehashes too, but at least they had some iconic characters added to the roster to raise the profile a little.

I expect it will be a solid entry in the Tekken series, but personally I couldn't be less excited about it.

I'd disagree on DOA4,

If you take out the horribly broken Tag mode I thought it was a vast improvement over the previous games on every front.

The interactive environments are still peerless, the online mode and lobby is the best of any fighter (almost any game at all) and most importantly it was a far more balanced and more technical game - which led it to being taken seriously in hardcore fighter circles - more so than the last few Tekkens in fact which, for me anyway, have been ruined by the juggle mechanic.

Fair enough, I've only ever been a casual DOA player. I had DOA 3 but I don't own DOA 4 myself, only played on a friends copy, and on the surface I couldn't really tell the difference but then I never played it online.

It seems to me that this gen the middle-of-the-road fighting games have lost a lot of popularity, and flavor of the generation seems to be either 2D retro or ultra-realism.

You have a point.
Last gen people seemed happy to play average fighters like Bloody Roar, SoulCalibur 3 and the like without much complaint.

I'm loving the retro thing you mention though, currently addicted to Bit. Trip Beat on the Wii actually!

Apologies, I forgot to qualify what I meant by 'middle-of-the-road'. I wasn't commenting on quality.

x---- If 2D retro fighters are here, And Fight Night / UFC is over here ----x

Then I'd see games like Tekken, DOA, SC and VF sitting somewhere in the middle.

Ah I see.

You know what, I reckon the point still stands. (It's easier on me that way!)

Back to Tekken 6, I can't help but wonder if the hype train would be at a little more like full steam if it was still an exclusive title?

To be honest I doubt it. Tekken 5 had more hype than 6 in the runup to it's release but it was already clear that the demand for 'practically the same but in HD' fighters was low.

Apart from gamers current apathy toward this sub-genre I think the very strong showing of games like Streetfighter, Fight Night and UFC, where clear and quantifiable improvements to their respective sub-genres have been made have simply outshone the competition.

I really loved the first and second Tekken on the PSX, when it still was a 2D fighter. But ever since they added the Z-axis they lost me. Also releasing this 2 years after the arcade version is pretty lame I think.

Arcade version is pretty good, played it a few times with a friend who is a big fan of the series and he loves it.

But how can it take two years to release a finished arcade game? What the hell is wrong with Japanese developers? Game development times seem so obscene sometimes.
