Tekken 6 announced for Xbox 360

Due out next autumn.

Microsoft has announced that Tekken 6 will launch simultaneously on Xbox 360 as well as PlayStation 3.

Speaking during the company's ongoing Tokyo Game Show keynote, Live and services boss John Schappert said the game would be out on 360 "at launch", which will be autumn 2009.

Tekken 6 - previously announced for PS3 only - will build on the success of Tekken 5 and Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, the second of which picked up 8/10 on Eurogamer, and includes online play, a new rage system and other tweaks.

The beat-'em-up also boasts over 40 characters in the arcade, which we'd expect to be reflected in the 360 and PS3 releases.

    Release date is retarded.

Announced a year (2 years?) before Soul Calibur launches over a year after Soul Calibur is released.

    From the same company ffs.

I wouldnt say it was a nail, not bothered about Tekken at all. Though its a good move by MS... making sure PS3 has less exclusives and less DLC's... MS must be spending LOTS of money right now.
  • Widge #6 3 years ago

I think Dead Or Alive is better than Tekken and the 360 already has that.
  • keyboardmonkey #7 3 years ago

I think it's going to be a bit strange playing this on the 360's controller.

I haven't played a game of Tekken in ages, but i am pretty sure it's the D-Pad i normally use.
  • carrotcake #8 3 years ago

yeah steroyd, T6 was announced at e3 2005, sony conference.

soul calibur iv announced much later and release much sooner.

so lame if you love tekken like me, because the ps2 version of T5 was in 2005. Four years of playing T5 until the next one comes out.
  • Gnort #9 3 years ago

Autumn 2009? Unless Japan somehow slipped into the Southern Hemisphere, that's a year away, isn't it?

Part of the delay will be due to the fact that the expanded version of the game, Bloodline Rebellion (like Dark Resurrection for T5), is only coming out in the arcades at the end of this year, and they'll no doubt want to include the new content in the console versions.
  • muscleblade #10 3 years ago

Only PS3 exclusive i really want isnt PS3 exclusive anymore. Great news.

Edit: Dead or Alive is just as good though imo.

"Another nail in the PS3's coffin."
LOL!!!!!! you wish. Tekken is not exactly a system seller, so no company is going to pay a premium to keep that franchise exclusive. Also, with development costs so large, why would any third-party keep their game on 1 system? IMHO you can have your button-mashing crap...you'll be over it in a week.
  • SeesThroughAll #12 3 years ago

LOL @ "nail in PS3's coffin" comments from the religious XBox fanatics.

    Hardly a surprise, really.
  • Shakey_Jake33 #13 3 years ago

Tekken is hardly a system seller anymore, so it's hardly a nail in the console's coffin. Honestly, the console 'war' between the PS3 and 360 could swing either way now... both consoles have a handful of first and second party exclusives (since the days of third party exclusives are coming to an end), and a combination of Sony and MS's marketing efforts, coupled with unpredicatable consumer tastes, will swing the scales in the race for second place.

If anything, announcements like this show that thanks to skyrocketing developments costs (and thus the need to go multiformat), we're able to play more games regardless of the format we own, and this is a good thing. Multiformat allows more people to experience a game - good thing for anyone except fanboys.
  • Triggerhappytel #14 3 years ago

I agree with makeamazing - it's not really a major loss on Sony's part, although in the overall context still good work by MS (assuming money was exchanged between MS and Namco Bandai, and it wasn't a decision NB took on their own).

However, while the fighting genre isn't as big as it once was, it does mean that while MS has Dead or Alive, PlayStation has gone from having two series exclusive (Tekken and Virtua Fighter) to having none. This is probably something Sony should rectify with a first-party franchise.
  • bioreit #15 3 years ago

Tekken always was rubbish. Playing it after playing Soul Blade and Soul Calibur was like moving through treacle with each limb tied to a hippo. Still, no doubt some people like it.

  • just4socom #18 3 years ago

thats the point man i the reason i like the ps3 is for its old franchise but it seems like sony and its console days are gonna be dead soon....it makes me think like damn i bought a ps3 for its old franchise but now theres like no point in buying a playstation

so theres no point in having both 360/ps3 just waisting money since ps3 is losing all its exclusives
  • Dizzy #19 3 years ago

A big meh at Tekken but a big surprised wow at multiplatform release.
  • peasoup #20 3 years ago

I haven't played tekken since 3..which i loved. Is it any good now days? Should i be excited?
  • JediMasterMalik #21 3 years ago

And so the generation of the multiplatform continues. Not really bothered about it not being exclusive, just glad it's coming, love me some Tekken. The first comment is a joke right?
  • Gnort #22 3 years ago

I don't think MS had to pay Namco, I think, as some people have pointed out, that with development costs as high as they are, pretty much every third party publisher needs to go multiplatform to maximise sales. Namco have been releasing plenty of their games on the 360, so this is not an unprecedented move.

As for its significance in the "console war", it isn't a big deal. Fighting games are nowhere near as popular as they were before, and for the general public, Tekken 6 wouldn't have been a system seller if it was exclusive to the PS3. However, I love fighting games and the Tekken series is my personal favourite, so Tekken 6 exclusivity would probably have made me buy a PS3. I already have two arcade sticks for my 360, so I'm particularly happy to be able to get all the major fighting games for a single console.
  • Quint2020 #23 3 years ago

    Didn't see that one coming.
  • just4socom #24 3 years ago

IM JUST GLAD that its not a 360 exclusive

exclusive games are just a sign of greed to me unless the game is to much that it cant run n the other console its fine with me

i bought a ps3 instead because of the blueray 56GB disc which has alot im lookin forward to BIG GAMES but so far i dont see any out that fills a whole blueray disc

because most games these days i can complete under a day and is way to easy which is to damn short
  • muftak #25 3 years ago

Good there shouldnt be 3rd party comapny exclusives like this nowadays should all be multiformat

It isnt a nail in the PS3 coffin at all sony strengh has always been their in house stuff like LBP , KZ2 and uncharted to name a few , they are the true systems sellers not beat em up like this.
  • Widge #26 3 years ago

I was thinking about this on the bus and thought that its a very good move for the Tekken people. Its become a bit of a no-mans-land game of recent. If you want the serious chin stroking OCD fighter you play Virtua Fighter, if you want all the flash and fun, you hit Soul Calibur and Dead Or Alive. Tekken has kind of fallen into a ill fitting middle ground, wanting to be a serious fighter but at the same time wanting to be all flashing... achieving neither.

I DLd Tekken 5 off PSN and must have played it all of 5 times. Well, I suppose its cheap! I do really miss DOA from my Xbox days, I just love to hammer the buttons and have a laugh. Was best enjoyed in a party situation, a bit soulless solitary in your front room.
  • andywilkie35 #27 3 years ago

was just a matter of time really wasn't it. This was something I was gonna get for PS3 purely because I actually want to buy some games for it, but if they're coming out on 360 as well then its a no brainer.

Poor PS3, I even use my xbox as a dvd player over it as well
  • SpaceMidget75 Verified Senior Software Developer, Minerva Computer Services #28 3 years ago

Never been a fan of Tekken so not too fussed. I do wish however that some of the fuckwits out there would stop assuming that MS pay for everything that goes multi-platform. FFS, the 360 sells games and Namco didn't see the point in making it a PS3 only game. Get over it. (Or create another online petition.)

As others have said, you will/have seen more stuff go multi-plat, as both systems have a decent sized install base now.

  • Razz #30 3 years ago

Tekken has never been exclusive to Sony machines anyway.

I've been telling my Sony fanatic friends for months that Tekken 6 would likely be multiformat but none of them believed me.

Hehehehehe... I can't wait to shove this in their faces. :))

    BTW, beatemupslol. :op

The Tekken 6 arcade machine (which is already in Japanese arcades) is actually a modded PS3, so I'm surprised that it's going to take another whole year to get this onto a PS3 home console.
  • JediMasterMalik #32 3 years ago

@andy - Why would you do that? AFAIK the PS3 is the better DVD player, quieter too.

Whatever decisions or deals were made, it'll be Japan where the impact is most obvious.
  • Xerx3s #37 3 years ago

Don't care much any more for fighters but it's funny to see how Tekken is suddenly 'not important' and 'not a system seller'.
  • Xerx3s #38 3 years ago

Think that it will play like shit on the 360 dpad tbf.
  • kinky_mong #39 3 years ago

Another "so and so game is not PS3 exclusive anymore" story that is of no consequence to me. I've never really liked Tekken and slightly blame it for popularising slow-paced beat 'em ups with needlessly long move lists.

Give me fast-paced games where each character has a maximum of 6 moves, but gives you the creativity to string then together into different combos (In other words make a new Killer Instinct and don't cock it up like the N64 one).

Given the fact that Bandai Namco have been quite strong supporters of the 360 with Soul Calibur 4, Ridge Racer 6, Tales of Vesperia, Katamari, Culdcept Saga, Ace Combat, Eternal Sonata and even some Japanese exclusives like the Idolm@ster games and Super Robot Taisen, I'm willing to give Microsoft the benefit of the doubt here and assume no exchange of cash was really needed. If anything, Bandai Namco realised how much money they could milk out of DLC (it was their main motivation for doing the Idolm@ster sequel) that it probably made sense to them, and expect loads of DLC to follow.

"wtf xbox???? this is BS xbox stole many title from ps3 and now tekken… this is not fair wow i cant believe i heard that unbelievable it is not fair xbox stole many title from ps3 and now this come on… xbox stole many title from sony…. go make your own game stop stealing from sony this is disgusting"

    Heh! :D
  • GamerG #44 3 years ago

This is one of the more intelligent ones....

xbox is nothing but a worthless theif who doesnt know the meaning of shame…. dead or live was originally from ps3 they stole it and now is xbox 360 exclusive, dont get me wrong i could care less about stupid dead or live, but considering this point that how repulsive and vicious xbox is i can tell you in the long run they will plan to do same thing with tekken because they now many people buy ps3 for tekken they are doing the same thing with final fantasy….. and people who are die hard tekken fans have to buy xbox and then have to pay monthly for xbox this fucking xbox trying to do everything to put sony out of business and all started because that basterd bill gate felt like he needed more money so he enetred the gaming business and screwed us all

The only PS3 game I want to see on the 360 is LBP and that ain't gonna happen. The more I read about it the more I want it, am actually considering getting a PS3.

I really feel like I've come out of the closet now. Tomorrow I might wear a PS3 t-shirt and walk with a limp.

  • Zebula77 #50 3 years ago

This would be cool if somehow the online mode went cross-platform. I've got a friend with a 360 and he kicks ass in beat 'em ups. I'd love to get my revenge, hehe.
  • steviepunk #51 3 years ago

Tekken has been the one game that I've really missed since I last had a Playstation (original Playstation), so glad it's coming to the 360.
  • mcwildcard #52 3 years ago

Frankly I couldn't give a shit if it came out on commodore 64 as well, as long as the game is decent.
Sorry, should I be ranting or something?

  • imamazed #55 3 years ago

Very intersting news - I may pick up when cheap; but Tekken has never really been as good as VF.
  • wingzerosys #56 3 years ago

Tekken (aswell as Ace Combat and Armoured Core) started life on the playstation, why start making them multiplat now?

The Xbox never got any of those games, now its just about stolen every Playstation exclusive.

MGS is the only one left, get ready for either an MGS 4 port, MGS 5 360 exclusive or MGS goes multi.

Why couldn't NAMCO let the PS3 have one exclusive? They've already given the 360 a Tales game, besides what if another DOA is announced, will that be 360 exclusive?

I'm sorry if I sound like a 360 fanboy (trust me I'm not) but at this rate the PS3 would be lucky to last through next year, its going the way the Dreamcast did.

You say the 360 won't get LBP, what's stopping MS from copying it and releasing their own version, you do know MS will be laughing their asses off at Sony, they're one big joke this gen.

    But are Sony to blame?
    Edited by 1 at 09/10/08 @ 18:22
  • davisorle #57 3 years ago

So the exclusives are down to Grand Tourismo? lmao.

And please dont tell me you don't expect next Metal Gear to not be on a 360... Honestly. It's rather amusing. I mean a friend of mine is puling on his pubes for selling his 360 about a year ago to get the PS3.

Seriously now. Sony is on a tight spot and we all know that Microsoft wont stop spending loads of money to prove their point. Which is good for those with a 360 or the gamer that wont care for the fucking brand like those pricks talking out of their asses. So as a curent gen console we more or less know the winner. I just wonder if Sony will make the move and try to get a new console out there around same time as MS will instead of push the, so slow to develop for, ps3 to its limits. Cause then they will end up falling WAY way back. Hope they learn their lesson this time around cause competition amuses me and offers to the gamer. I wouldn't like monopoly from MS even if I more than enjoy their current strategy.

All for the shake of the gamer. its all about ME ME ME MEEEEeeee
