Team17 unveils Alien Breed Evolution

Retro-modern, download, co-op.

Team17 has pulled the curtain back on Alien Breed Evolution, a co-operative and download-only project first teased last September.

Three screenshots are up for your perusal, but otherwise details are scarce - no dates, no platforms. Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network are strong candidates, however, given the visuals on show.

Team17 promises more soon.

Excellent news! Can't wait. Hopefully this does well enough to bring back other golden Team 17 titles.
  • bad09 #5 3 years ago

Spadge get in here now and tell us when in July!!!!!

Team 17 in non-Worms shocker. But really, well done, this looks fantastic. Although the Aliens don't look quite how I remember, maybe James Cameron had something to say about image rights...
  • spadge #7 3 years ago

No details as yet. It's a little while off but should be this year.

We'll release video in a couple of weeks. It looks WAY better moving (the audio's great too).
  • George-Roper #8 3 years ago

Although the Aliens don't look quite how I remember, maybe James Cameron had something to say about image rights...

Or maybe spiky, black horseshoes in Alien Breed didn't give you enough of a picture of how they'd look in 3D?

Anyway, fantastic news. I really hope this turns out great!
  • Chufty #9 3 years ago

  • JonFE #10 3 years ago

Based on the screens, it looks great; if it plays as it looks, purchase is dead cert...

spadge, please pass on some well-deserved kudos to the team :)
  • spadge #11 3 years ago

The team have done a fine job, thanks (still hard on with it btw!).
  • Bumadan #12 3 years ago

Fantastic! Very much looking forward to this :-)
  • rudedudejude #13 3 years ago

I hope they do the alarm countdown missions with the firedoors :) - awesome!
  • cam_guin #14 3 years ago

Awesome...anyone remember Take No Prisoners? Great little shooter...

I can hardly see for salty geriatric gamer tears!
  • klem578 #16 3 years ago

Really really good-looking for a DL only game, the atmosphere i get just by looking at those screenshots is amazing...

Basically, since i never got to play the previous A.B, could anyone describe how it played/looked/felt?
Was it like a dungeon crawler in space but more "shootey"? (that's the feeling it gives me judging by those pics).
  • bad09 #17 3 years ago

"Basically, since i never got to play the previous A.B, could anyone describe how it played/looked/felt? "

    BLOODY AWESOME! :)
  • cam_guin #18 3 years ago

@klem - frantic little run and gun top down shooter, with puzzle elements. fluid 360 movement, neat graphics and attention to detail. Like the recoil and the muzzle flash off your machine gun. The logo was pretty badass to boot...

    I totally forgot about these too : http://uk .gamespot.com/amiga/action/alie...

Looks nice, but I'll wait for more details to see if this is the game that'll wash Box Office Bust's foul taste away like spadge kept claiming.
  • Muzakjunkie #20 3 years ago

Screens look great, can't wait to play it guys.
  • bodypopper #21 3 years ago

Can't wait. Can someone resurrect Chaos Engine too please?
  • chiz #22 3 years ago

  • ZuluHero #23 3 years ago

    Great news :)

My brother and I used to re-live scenes from Aliens playing Tower Assualt. I bet he'd be over the moon if i told him about this. We might be grown up now, but theres always room for some co-op alien blasting! :)
  • anomagnus #24 3 years ago

    @TriggerHippie

i wish i could give you more than one recommendation

If you can remember playing this game when it first came out, does that make us both geriatric old gamers?
  • superted1974 #25 3 years ago

If I could have only owned one game on my Amiga it would have been Kick Off 2

    But....

If I was allowed a second it would have been Alien Breed.

I think my name might give away my age - like anomagnus was also playing rather than studying!
  • schnide #26 3 years ago

    bewarealienspadgehasdroppedone
  • kangarootoo #27 3 years ago

Looks nice. Will it be as frickin hard as the original was I wonder?
  • chudders #28 3 years ago

Awesome! Those alarm/firedoors levels shit me up something rotten.

    Ahh fond memories.
  • RabidChild #29 3 years ago

    CHAOS ENGINE next, please :)

(yeah, I know it was the Bitmap Bros rather than Team17, but I can dream)
  • Milbe #30 3 years ago

    welcome to INTEX systems!
  • spadge #31 3 years ago

3 difficulty levels, admittedly the original was mighty tough (we were all brought up on the toughness of coin-ops).
  • steviepunk #32 3 years ago

excellent, really looking forward to this one :D
  • TriggerHippie #33 3 years ago

    @anomagnus

Yep, we're the Chelsea pensioners of gaming!

as others have said, chaos engine HAS to be made

i actually find myself nostalgic now for things like gamesmaster. How sad is that?

  • Johnsters #35 3 years ago

I can't remember if I liked Alien Breed the 1st time around.
I was probably too busy playing Cannon Fodder, Sensible soccer or Laser Squad.

If mid 30's is classed as "geriatric old gamers" then I would prefer the term "Twilight gamer" :-)

  • TriggerHippie #36 3 years ago

Twilight Gamers! rofl. There's a gaming clan with slighty diminished reaction times in the making.
  • hiddenranbir #37 3 years ago

    Make it PC!!!!

    YES! WOO!

    ALIEN BREEEEEEEEEEEED!
  • Darren #38 3 years ago

Alien Breed for XBLA?!? Yummy! It always was, by far, my favourite Team 17 game from my Amiga days. :)
  • septimus #39 3 years ago

    Looks great.

    @Spadge
Is the PS3 version getting simultaneous release? Please! Even though I have a 360, all my mates who used to be Amiga gamers are on PS3.
  • Silvervein #40 3 years ago

Team 17 is still alive? Woo! :)
Where were you hiding all those years guys. hehe. Still, great comeback! If you could only bring more remakes of good old titles. And don't forget pc :)

    PS.
And this is what I call a proper remake of alien breed (judging by the screenshots). Shows that you can do it if you know how, hehe. As opposed to that mess with fallout 3...
  • schnide #41 3 years ago

Fallout 3 is one of the best games ever made. What you say has no implication on this.
  • Xerx3s #42 3 years ago

"Fallout 3 is one of the best games ever made. What you say has no implication on this."

Oh dear oh dear. I assume that you are either very young or never played anything other than console games?
  • bad09 #43 3 years ago

All this talk of Team17 makes me want to play Project X!

Man I wish I still owned my Amiga, UAE is great but I loved that machine soooo much! Real men had Amiga, ST owners were girlymen who had no friends and beat up little kittens.

/ watches clock for evening of emulated amiga love.
  • kangarootoo #44 3 years ago

"Fallout 3 is one of the best games ever made. What you say has no implication on this."

I liked FO3 a lot, but its quality (like all quality) is subjective. It might be your favourite, but its still just a matter of opinion.
  • kangarootoo #45 3 years ago

    @bad09

There are a bunch of good emulators out there, though I would not search for them at work as such sites to live in close proximity to female nakedness and other not-work-friendly internet content :)

  • Eurolamer #46 3 years ago

No, no... MOONSTONE remake next! I've been praying for years.
  • kangarootoo #47 3 years ago

Correction, I would NOT search for them at work (amiga emulators I mean). NOT.
  • Khanivor #48 3 years ago

Moonstone would work well as a remake, let's have it!

I'd love to see some co-op old skool RPGs redone too.
  • BigJonno #49 3 years ago

This kinda thing is why anyone more than a couple of years younger than me makes me feel old. I'm 26 and I have the same fond memories of Alien Breed on the Amiga as the 30-somethings. I was definitely at the bottom end of my generation.
  • bad09 #50 3 years ago

    @ kangarootoo

Cheers dude, any you recommend (for when I get home of course!) as I do find UAE a tad fiddly so I'm all for something better/easier.
  • Silvervein #51 3 years ago

    @bad09

Try this site, it has two amiga emulators and links to other amiga sites. Hopefully you'll be able to find something there.

    @ Silvervein

Nice one fella, I'll have a look although UAE gets a better rating so maybe I just need to learn how to use it properly! :)

  • esperanto #53 3 years ago

Those screens look amazing - makes me wanna dust off my Amiga
  • KujiGhost #54 3 years ago

Pleeeeeease have the same awesome sound effects and music!!
  • 4thVariety #55 3 years ago

I don't even have to think about buying this.
  • bad09 #56 3 years ago

"Does anyone know if this will have a story mode?"

Fap shows his age! Did Gauntlet need a story? ;)

Yeah it's got a story - Storm in shoot anything that moves, find the key, access Intex. Repeat on the next level.

    Fucking bliss!

Edit - Christ how could I spell Gauntlet wrong!

  • bad09 #57 3 years ago

Ah man fap! You missed a SWEET time for gaming. Kick Off, Sensi Soccer, Cannon Fodder, Team 17 games not worms, Bitmap games. Oh my!

/ contemplates buying old Amiga for the hell of it!
  • Silvervein #58 3 years ago

Hehe. Yeah. Team 17 games are like christmas, easter and birthday all rolled into one :)
And I still have my old A500. Maybe it's time to dust off my floppies and play some classics.
  • bad09 #59 3 years ago

Cheers for the + Fap. Like most I get negged now and again..and again. No biggie you can't please everyone!
  • Silvervein #60 3 years ago

    This is off topic.
I looked at this page of discussion thread and noticed that someone gave -2 marks to almost everyone. Is it sabotage of EA, designed to remove everyone enjoying team 17 games (and their remakes)? ;)
  • michaelius #61 3 years ago

"No, no... MOONSTONE remake next! I've been praying for years. "

Oh hell yes - Moonstone, Alien Breed, Cannon Fodder, Sensible Soccer, Worms were some of the best tings that happened in my gamers life :)
  • MeBrains #62 3 years ago

alien breed was sweet indeed. I remember looking at the screens in all the magazines (had a 64 at the time) and was drooling all over it. only ended up playing it on the A1200 I got a few years later. good stuff. quite glad live and psn exist, it makes devs create 2D games again.
  • septimus #63 3 years ago

Going to get the CD32 out of the box and play AB II Tower Assualt.

/also, are there some miffed Atari owners marking down all these comments? Or is it some pre-pubescent failure who doesn't understand how good these games can be? Weirdest comment marking I have ever seen... got to love EG readers. :)

It's like a digg down comment thread.... except without the impressive minus numbers.

  • 4thVariety #64 3 years ago

    Hurray for MOONSTONE.

Now that game had gore galore. Not like those random red bloodspatters of God of War or other games. Lovingly hand-created fountains of red gushing blood for every animation.

Also a definite YESSS, for any Chaos Engine twin stick shooter remake.

    btw, where is TURRICAN HD?
  • TRUTH #65 3 years ago

Never played AB the original - is this just a shooter ?...hope it has sense of atmosphere with adventure, rpg and puzzles and not an constant stream of aliens to shoot (that will get boring)!
  • Bazfrag #66 3 years ago

Mainly a balls out shooter with a tense atmosphere.
  • UKGN_Zoidberg #67 3 years ago

I hope there is a choice of control methods. I looks like a prime candidate for the usual twin stick controls like Geo Wars but a more traditional directional method like the original would make me even happier.
  • spadge #68 3 years ago

Controls are a kind of mix of the two. It's not a robotron clone :)
  • kipper #69 3 years ago

    @ spadge

Thankyou for including 3 difficulty levels, as I found Tower Assault lots of fun but i never got past the first few levels playing solo.
Please also assure us that accidentally closing the wrong fire door will not prevent you from escaping when the level self destructs? Or that you can re-open the firedoors maybe?

But otherwise this is a certain purchase for me for XBLA online co-op fun.
