Takeuchi doesn't expect to do Resi 6
Reckons somebody else will get the gig.
Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi has said he doesn't expect to be in charge of the next game in the survival horror series, and nor does his fellow producer Masachika Kawata.
There was no suggestion during Takeuchi's Comic-Con fan panel appearance that this was down to poor results or anything - after all, Resident Evil 5 sold millions, and more importantly still has a phone-booth advert round the corner from my house four months later.
But according to Kotaku he said, "it doesn't appear as though either of us is going to be in charge", having joked that he and Kawata were "playing blackjack to decide who is going to be stuck with the responsibility".
Resident Evil 5 sold very strongly, and topped the charts, although some criticised its action-heavy approach, arguing it was perhaps losing touch with its origins. And by some I mean me. I thought that.
So did Kristan, a bit, as you can see in our Resident Evil 5 review from earlier in the year.

maybe the guys within capcom can look at Dead Space and make the resi evil series a little less clunky...
and how about a few puzzles? i used to enjoy getting stuck like that, rather than having to take part in some bizarre benny hill style chase for a set amount of time...

I want the old RE back. The mixture of combat, horror and intricately crafted puzzles.

They'd just blast your ears to mush like dead space did....but to be fair most people didn't realise their enemy designs were arse, because the 'wurrrgh' at volume 11 made them jump

I can see why fans of old school single player resi might be put out though.
If they did a new game that had a single player that was the bastard child of Resi 4 and Deadspace (mainly the control scheme from deadspace heh) and a co-op mode that kept the best from resi 5...
I'd be a happy gamer.

\o/ Hopefully 6 will actually be a RE game then!
5 is still on my shelf for complete collection purposes. I want to sell it, get it out of my memory but I can't leave that hole on the shelf!

I don't particularly like the game, but the guy has the chops in terms of getting the teams to produce stunning looking, big selling games....on many levels RE5 is pretty amazing, namely...Production values.
Presumably he's some kind of understudy to Kenji Inafune, and let's face it, we're talking about ridiculously talented people when we talk shite about them
but yea...it wasn't as good as 4! but then that was Shinji Mikami...aka god

Actually, I found the basic concepts very interesting: the new co-op play, old partner Jill "joining" the other side. I mean, what does something like that do to Chris, someone he has been partners with for such a long time becomes a mindless virus creature with superpowers, out to eat him without any further thoughts or recollections? Wesker's ultimate, ironic kick in Chris' groin, I loved it. Oh, and finally, the showdown between Chris and Wesker. Awesome.
But then comes the actual game, and along with that Takeuchi's "execution" of the above, fascinating concepts. I couldn't believe what he let pass (then again, he also directed Lost Planet, not exactly a lot of brilliance there, either).
The new co-op play sacrificed so much of what made RE great and replaced it with nothing, leaving the uncomfortable feeling that *someone* crippled a game which worked fine, just so he could ram co-op play down its throat (which just so happens to be a central theme in Lost Planet 2, too...). I still find co-op a good idea for RE, but it should have been an enrichment beyond the single player experience, and not a dominating mechanism such that single player has to concede its very soul to it.
Then comes the whole "Jill on the other side" and "Chris vs Wesker" bit. I might be the only one who cares about story arcs, continuity and script quality and such, but what Takeuchi has done with those intriguing concepts, well, it still blows my mind. Very, very poor form here. I can't, don't want to believe what happened in some of the scenes, but there it is.
So as I said, I really hope the next guy doesn't fall into the same traps. Because I am not buying something like Resident Evil 5 again. Especially not if they continue the ludicrous "future plot" outlined in those silly RE5 Files you can collect during the game.
Still, the other stuff in there isn't too bad - credit where credit is due. Graphics and music are top notch. Technical excellence. Acceptable game play, although much of the underlying depth from 4 is simply gone. I did enjoy finding all the treasure, upgrading all the weapons, unlocking all the unlockables and all the Achievements. But, after doing all that, I am not in the least motivated to go back and play again. Much unlike RE0, RE1, RE2, RE3, RE:CV, and RE4, 5's predecessors which I am still playing regularly, smiling all the way. Now *those* are quality entertainment.
Sigh, if only I could forget that horrible plot and pretend it never happened. But there it is, and it is now officially canon. Oh boy.
